According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, garlic and other members of the allium family, including onions, contain thiosulfate, which is toxic to dogs but not to humans. Thiosulfate causes oxidative damage to red blood cells, resulting in hemolytic anemia

Garlic, onions, chocolate, and other things. No-nos for dogs and cats. Maybe the honey helped to mitigate it, as it was right after. GORGEOUS dogs. My guy was Jasper, too, a beautiful big black chow-chow mix. Cheers, All!

Any reputable vet will tell you don’t even give them a little bit. Why give your dog something that is toxic in larger amounts even if your opinion is that a tiny bit won’t hurt? There is plenty of research from reputable sources on the Internet that all agree: stay away from garlic and onions as well. Anyone can call themselves a vet in the comments so take that with a grain of salt. Do your own research and talk to your own veterinarian to be sure.

Calm down Brian. There’s more to science than google tells you. I am 100% sure these dogs did not succumb to hemolytic or any other type of anemia. They’re fine. Maybe they shouldn’t eat 5 bulbs of garlic but neither should you. Google that.

I was thinking the same thing, but that list of toxic foods concerns me. I always wondered if a dog got into an entire bag of onions, or a whole bulb of garlic, and then died, so people just said, well that's bad for dogs. I only think that because dogs can be idiots when they snoop into stuff that isn't food for them.

@@cityofoaks One study is not enough to counter widey agreed on previous findings. Yamamoto was trialling AGE (aged garlic extract), not fresh garlic. Garlic, onions etc ARE toxic to cats and dogs, but amounts can be crucial. One clove, one time, for dogs this size is ok, probably. The people saying to be careful have a point.
@cityofoaks

@@nelstar-b I agree that being careful is always prudent. However people having a conniption fit over a dog eating a relatively small amount of garlic is insanity. People forget that before Yamamoto's study garlic was routinely included in kibble. It was Yamamoto's study that caused the "widely agreed on" finding's acceptance but once Yamamoto did more research and found that his first results were not valid the wider community did not respond. Either you follow "the science" or you don't.
@nelstar-b

@@cityofoaks Well it appears you are right. It's not necessary though to take that sneery tone about 'the science' when almost every vet article online repeats the incorrect reading of one study. I did wonder, as I have used garlic as an animal remedy in the past and used to feed my cats leftovers which often had garlic in them. From the few (very few) articles I could find refuting this whole thing, it seems garlic is ok in small quantities; the problem lies with the rest of the allium family. The sulphides in onions are particulalry toxic.

Do some research before feeding your dogs random things please. Garlic is poisonous to dogs. One clove of garlic for dogs of that size 'probably' won't cause them problems. But it's irresponsible to feed it to them just to get some views on a video. Plus someone else might watch this and also think it's ok to feed to their dogs. But if they happen to have a small dog, or one that's just sensitive to garlic, they could be in serious trouble. I'd suggest you edit this video to remove the garlic.

Garlic and onions will destroy a dogs liver over time. It is cumulative and leads to a condition known as hemolytic anemia. Cooked bones of any sort are bad as they will splinter. I have 2 GSD and we used to give them raw chicken for ages until we discovered they had an allergy to chicken. Not all dogs have issues but if they start developing hot spots cut out the chicken for a while and the spots disappear. Raw chicken is great for most dogs, the bones uncooked presents no issues as their stomach acid breaks it down easily. Great source of calcium. Only issue is i have 2 GSD's and neither can tolerate chicken. Both break out in hot spots. Once we found out the reason for the spots we stopped all chicken. Do you know how difficult it is to find a single protein dog food! Most irrespective of the type contain chicken. Whether the label says beef kangaroo goat whatever it almost all contains chicken. Chicken is cheap and it helps bulk up the food. I'm glad to see these 3 seem good with it.

I just started watching these videos they were recently recommended. I've only watched a few but I notice the dog on the right eats most everything & the dog in the middle drools a lot lol. They're gorgeous! German Shepherds are my most favorite breed.

GREAT looking and WELL-behaved dogs!!! They are so much fun watching, as I've seen about all videos so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much for not feeding boned meat to dogs, as yours are extremely healthy. Great job!!!

They’re definitely not healthy let alone extremely so. But they’re surviving and happy and hopefully one day they’ll be healthy too. Do you not see all the products from animals like them and us?

And they’re well-behaved because they seem to be respected and loved, to an extent at least. You’d be surprised how well things can be if you love and respect others as treat them as equals, regardless of physical body.

6 years ago my german shepherd got a hold of a chocolate cake. He ate the entire thing. He had no side effects and is still around to attempt to do it again.

Your doggos are so precious!! Grew up with GS's - they are so intelligent and have lovely manners. Definitely alpha dogs - like the supermodel of the dog-walk.

People who think it is debatable on whether or not to feed their dog onion, garlic, chocolate, sugar, etc. need to read books and talk to a very good vet before attempting to be a dog owner.
