Wow, what a gorgeous plant Lyn! And great to hear its history. I wonder if there's a trick to getting a beheaded cactus to produce multiple heads? All my Trichocereus and Myrtillocactus that I've cut (usually as failed grafting stock) have only produced a single head, except for one that has two heads. I have some Ferocactus seedling but still very small. Give them another 28 years...haha. Happy Wednesday evening to you and Hans💚🌵🙂

So happy you love this 3 headed Fero Donald :-D it really is a golden oldie, yes there is away of getting barrel cacti to produce multiple heads, its called 'Coring' where you burn a hole at the crown of the cactus to kill the growing point, it then encourages the cactus to send out pups from the areoles from the crown of the cactus, Ziggy @ziggys cactus Channel and Ana @ Cactus Caffeine have shown videos about this, I have never tried it with any of mine yet, but it looks fascinating, thanks so much Donald for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle to Northern Spain for a wonderful Wednesday evening XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalon Wow, thanks for the tip about coring/hot-nailing Lyn, I've just watched Ana's videos on it and I've learnt a whole load, including more of the science behind how they grow. I'm now looking around at my beautiful plants to work out which ones I'm going to sacrifice to the hot nail treatment, my Echinocactus Grusonii plants are probably all still too small but I've got loads of Trichos to experiment with. And actually if the science applies to other species of cactus, my Cleistocactus Winteri experiment (I'm videoing it but will be a few months before it's ready to release) may just have become a whole load more interesting. Now I'm really excited! 🌵🌵🌵

Growers can also damage the growth tip intentionally to get branching and cresting. I've heard people have gotten cactus to crest by heating up a nail and tapping it into the apical meristem, but I've never tried it myself. I do have a cactus I have turned into a bonsai, I got it to branch a lot by cutting it back. I think its a Parodia(unlabeled when I got it.) it looks like a mini Saguaro now.

WOW thats fantastic you have turned your Parodia into a Bonsai, yes there is a method of getting barrel cacti to pup at the top by coring, by heating a nail and tapping it into the growing tip at the crown to kill the main meristem, this causes the cactus to shoot pups from around the areoles from the top, thanks so much Ben for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
