I remember these collected plants from when I lived in Tucson. When road work went through, or as you say construction. These plants were collected and state tagged. Be careful!! These guys are extra tender!!! That is a beautiful acanthodes!!! I remember them well from the Mojave desert. Didn't know the species name had changed. I've heard the new name watching videos and thought it looked like an acanthodes. Enjoy!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful day!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌴🌲🌺🌳🌻🌿🌷🍀🌹😀👍

I so enjoyed this video! That is a wonderful fire barrel. Many years ago, travelling through the Mojave, I collected one of these from private land. It was much smaller and of course it couldn't survive here in western Washington even with protection. They are such an icon of the mojave I just had to try. They are incredibly beautiful when growing thick on a hillside with the setting sun behind them. Then they truly appear to be on fire! I am in love with your gloves! Those are going on my list to Santa this year. Please keep us updated on this cactus.

You described this cactus very well! Backlit by the sun is when it is best to look at them. 😍 The gloves that I’m using is my favorite. As you can see it is dirty as I use it a lot. It is not 100% proof against spines but it is the one that best deals with them among my gloves. Link to this gloves is in my video description. 🙂

Oh wonderful! That Ferocactus is so popular here in Japan for its' red and thick spines and amazing flowers! I'm glad to see you used some native soil in your mix. I use clay 'Akadama' as my soil mixed with river sand, and a soft soil called 'kanuma'. I use 10% potting mix to add a little nutrients like Nitrogen. I add manure pellets when I repot👌just like you recommend🤲💞It's terrible when native cacti have to be taken from their habitat, but it's nice to see them survive and get a home🌟Thanks for the video. I wish no cactus will be taken out of their habitat. But I guess as our population grows and cities develop, it is inevitable. Honestly for something of this size and age, I have no idea how big it can get. But usually cacti here in the desert don’t grow deep roots. They spread on the surface to have the most access to the very little rainfall we get.

The plant is very impressive, you were really lucky to get a specimen like that, particularly for that price. Do you have an update video of the plant, how is it now? Speaking of the soil, I would rather keep the entire original soil - actually it looks very good and the only thing that I would add is about 10% of organic matter and some coarse sand for better drainage.
@housemr82663 жыл бұрын
Mixing the Soil was a really good Idea. They actually love Clay. Since it lost so much Roots ( i think they cut the big Ones when they dug them up) ,i would transplanted him into a Pot that is a few cm bigger than the Catus itself and really shallow to help the roots getting water and not staying too wet for too long but i think thats just my climate here in Germany. Good Job :)
@CactusCaffeine3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You are correct. I have to be careful with this one when watering it. I used this pot as I don’t want to keep moving it to a bigger pot as it grows. It is heavy as it is now. Hopefully, this can live in this pot for many years before I need to move it again. 😉 Cheers! 🌵☕️

I just planted a packet of seeds of ferocactus acanthodes along with ferocactus glaucescens on 9-11, when the moon was in Scorpio. They sprouted within a week. Now I know what my plants will look like maybe 15 years from now. I remember back in the sixties when I first started growing cacti, every dime store had a rack of Crosman seeds and one of the varieties they offered was barrel cactus, Ferocactus acanthodes. The picture on the packet wasn't that attractive, so I never bought any. When I found out how attractive they were, I put them on my wish list. PS. Yes I plant by the moon sign. I learned a long time ago that seeds sprout much faster when you plant on the recommended days. Some people say that the water table is much higher at those times. If that is true, why does it work even when you sow your seeds in a pot on the sixth floor of a high rise with no connection to ground water? My personal theory is that since plants are geotropic, they can feel the relative position of the Earth, Sun, and Moon and respond to it. I use Blum's Garden Calendar and I get good results. (I also get a recipe for a delicious meal every month.) If nothing else, it lets me plan and have my equipment and supplies ready ahead of time.

@azulgally2 жыл бұрын
Is this lava rock literally lava solidified? I mean pyroclasts?
@SimaShangde Жыл бұрын
It is called scoria. It's a vesicular basalt, which means it is a foamy form of basalt with a lot of air bubbles. It is formed during volcano eruption, when the gasses are released and basaltic lava came out in a foamy form (just like opening a bottle of a Coke after shaking it vigorously). It is red because of iron oxidation.
