If you decide to keep it, instead of putting it in storage at a yard like you had, consider getting a used trailer and just putting it in your shop. A trailer will be expensive, but depending on how long you need it, will probably pay for itself over storage at a drydock.

I just have to ask - why wasn't the boat winterized back in the fall? But for a few gallons of antifreeze nothing would have happened. Also, keep all of the seacocks closed when not using for extended periods. If you can't close the seacocks take the boat out of the water and fix them. I used to winterize my boats myself and if I couldn't do it I paid to have it done. The engines got water in them so they are toast unless they are pickled as soon as they are taken out of the water. The electric wiring is done because it absorbs water and corrodes. So, basically all you have left is a fiberglass shell that will be sold by the insurance company for peanuts.

Well, this shows the balance of life. You ultimately took this one in stride, just as you do when troubleshooting other major repairs/setbacks, but then take joy in the finished product (such as cancer-->chemo-->clean). A further example, in the last video (Murci test drive), you were grinning ear-to-ear, and the viewers were happy with you. This week, we felt your pain. I have watched enough BIFB videos to know you will land. Maybe not squarely on your feet at first, but you WILL land.

It would have to let go completely. His sumps should have been able to deal with leaking seals. It would take a serious size leak or his sumps going out to sink that thing. He may have lost shore power, and his batteries died, then a leak could have taken him down.

Could also be rain/snow accumulated on it, deck scuffers got clogged with ice, and the sumps died. If it went low enough in the water a loose hatch or porthole could have let it in. It looks to have sank rear first.

How amazing would it have been if Chris's insurance agent was proactive and in touch with the yacht being a restoration/upgrade property? They could have been soliciting a revaluation or maybe at least sending reminders to winterize the boats. The best service would be to educate insurance policy holders on how to avoid the most common or preventable losses. That seems like a win/win... maybe some insurance is like paying for nothing.

Hi, sorry about you boat. Hope it will turn it good. I can tell what wee do in Norway in the freezing winter. Engine: ALL inlet/outlet below waterline have shutoff valve. Main engine inlet has a Vale to add a hose coupling. We shut off sea water and add a hose, put the hose in a bucket of 50/50 coolant/water. Then start the engines. When you see coolant come out of the exhaust, stop engine. Now you have a coolant filled heat exchanger, hoses and filers. Now it won't freez an crack. Even old italian plastic. Drinking water: just open the tap an drain as much as possible, turn off pressure pump, leave all the taps open, toilet, empty and add antifreeze down the toilet. Just reach out if you need more details.

I know I'm just a stranger to you, but I feel strangely invested in your life story, having followed you for all of these years. Once again, I have to admire your on-screen attitude about these sorts of things. I hope you had a complete melt-down off-camera. I know I would. Such a shame, all of that hard work. I wish you the best and look forward to seeing how this evolves.

So sorry this happened to you, Chris, and hope you'll be able to get it back to its glorious state. But, even if you don't, the way you approach such tragic events is commendable and I am sure you will be able to get through this, the same way you did before.

I feel so bad for him. That really sucks. I can't imagine having a loss like that with one of our projects. I watched every commercial/add and didn't skip at all to hopefully help the video make as much money it can to help offset the cost of recovery and repair

I think the big question is the engines. If they can be dried and smothered in oil, both internally and externally before the rust starts being too difficult, then yes, a restoration is very possible.

One problem is those new race motors were not designed to be sunk. Those big original marine diesels are designed to handle what just happened. Those motors are probably toast or will be toast in about 2 months. Should’ve rebuilt those original engines like I suggested.

Sad way to start your birthday man. I wasn't as invested in the boat as other projects but still definitely sucks to see all that hard work gone to waste. Here's hoping you can recover or repair as much as possible. Best of luck, BIFB team! And I hope you had a better rest of your birthday week.

I specialise in boat repair, especially sinkers and boat fires. If that is salt water that it has sat in for multiple days, that will be an absolute nightmare to repair. The salt will corrode all the wiring which means a full rewire, the engine bores will be rusty and all the fluid lines too. If youre determined i would pressure wash the entire boat inside and out with fresh water to get rid of as much salt as possible then leave the boat to dry out until summer as even though it is GRP the foam core will be compromised somewhere and the water will leach in, I can guarantee you that. Maybe if you can get the engine out do that ASAP and strip it down to clean it. Not impossible to repair, but a full rewire while the furniture is all in situ will be a PITA. Not to mention tracking down period parts. Good Luck!

I’m so sorry this happened , if the insurance is being ignorant and not helping the way they should I strongly recommend trying to salvage the new LS motors and maybe putting them on a new to you boat one that’s not going to sink and has better stability, even if you do fix it there’s no guarantee it won’t sink again :( your positivity is truly inspiring you’re a great man.

Holy crap man! My stomach sank when I started watching and realized it wasn't click bait. THAT SUCKS!!! Looking forward to seeing what caused it and what the plans are. I vote rebuild. Get it hauled to the shop and go to town on it. I'm sure that'll be cheaper in the long run compared to a dry dock.

Marina fire. I owned a 34' steel trawler. It was docked in an old wooden marina in North Carolina. Another boat caughf fire. The entire marina, including all the fiberglass boats, burned to the waterline. My trawler was a total loss. It took 7 months before I got a check from the insurance company. Only after I wrote a letter to the State's insurance commission. The insurance companies response was almost immediate!

When a boat has been sunk like yours, its a huge job to fix. Everything inside the vessel will have to be replaced. The engines should be okay if there was anti freeze in the cooling system.

The best part is going to be when he finds out that the diesel engines were 80% of the value. The core charge on the diesel engines is more than the new cost of the LSX engines. Plus, yachts of that size with gas engines have no resale at all, so the insurance isn’t going to pay him squat. He literally paid over $100,000 to lower the value of the yacht to $10,000. If it’s over 36 feet long and isn’t a center console with outboards, it only has value with diesel engines. Plus, since those LSX engines are not marine rated, his insurance doesn’t even have to cover him at all. Using automotive parts in a yacht is a big problem, and is more than enough reason for his insurance to just laugh at him and pay nothing. If they pay him $10,000, they are being nice.

@@adamr9215I'm not sure I get your sarcasm, but he talked about the high diesel engine replacement costs. It's what made him figure the alternative with LSX for his case, so thankfully this won't be a surprise for Chris.
@adamr9215
@adamr9215 3 ай бұрын
@@IceAce1 I don’t think you understand. It was worth more with 2 broken diesel engines than with 2 new gas engines. Plus, those LSX engine aren’t marine rated, so the insurance doesn’t have to pay him anything. He put over $100,000 into that boat and since it was done wrong, all he did was lower the value to nothing. It was only worth $5-10,000 after all the work. He seems to think that since he paid $100,000 for the engines, he is going to get that much back, but he isn’t. He will be lucky if he gets $10,000.
@IceAce1

@@adamr9215 Honestly, I'm not interested enough in the monetary values, but certainly know/agree it would have brought more value to stick to original parts. We'll see what happens. At least we don't have a case where both the insurance and the owner bail from salvage costs, like the Nakoa's after it kissed a protected Hawaiian reef.
