My 335i Went Into Limp Mode! Here's How I Fixed It

Hey guys so recently my 335i N54 went into limp mode, and here I explain what the issue was and how I solved it. Turns out it was a cracked vacuum line. Hope you all enjoyed the video! Thank you for watching :)

Just got my 335i and already encountered this problem; Here's a few things you should look at if you encounter limp mode or the code 30FF/30FE 1. Chargepipes for cracks and/or Front mount Intercooler 2. Vacuum Lines 3. Vanos or Boost solenoids. Good luck!

Just a heads up to everyone out there, the car can go into limp mode for many reasons not just what you’re seeing here, even a computer spazzing out or a sensor could cause this so do understand that many things can cause a BMW to go into limp mode. Also another tip, if you don’t have a warranty anymore and need to have issues or repairs done please do proper research on your own and make sure you find a mechanic that KNOWS what they’re doing with these cars because they can be very tricky to diagnose and repair, don’t go to some idiot who is just going to start swapping out parts, you’ll regret it and become broke in the process.

had the same problem, after so much heat the OEM tubes became brittle and crumpled, i went to home depot and replaced it with plumbing tubes, way more heat resistant now.

so the reason it was going into limp mode is because it kept overheating but neither mechanics i went to could figure out why it was overheating. i spent too much money trying to fix it and ended up just giving the car back to the dealership

I replaced my vanos solenoids, cam sensor, knock sensors, and had my intake walnut blasted...no codes since but dropped a few fixing it. Love my 335i convertible.

Nice video bud! My son's 08 335i is apparently leaking transmission fluid and a warning message just came up and it has gone into this so-called limp mode as well. With never owning a BMW before, I had no idea that it didn't have a dipstick to check engine oil and transmission fluid levels - way to go germans! I am going to have to find someone with a lift in order to check the transmission fluid and most likely have to add some (I'm praying this is all I have to do). Do you know if after returning transmission fluid to an acceptable level will bring it out of limp mode automatically? Oh and just fyi...it looks like you added 'electrical' tape, not duck tape...;)

Great Video! I had the same problem. Took it to Georgian BMW Steelership in Barrie, ON and after spending over $3000 with them and not to mention they had it for over a week, the problem still did not get resolved. Took the vehicle to an expert that basically works from a home based business and got it resolved for $300 bucks! It truly is bad engineering.

these cars are a love hate relationship my 2007 is at 160k and its a horrible for repairs probably spend about $2,000-3,000 per year on just repairs not even including routine maintenance. However I love the car lol

I just replace my coolant top hoses after the return one cracked and sprayed everywhere. Two days later...Boom! Reduced Power, Turbo Waste gate B. I touched the hose where you just touched it and I also replaced the coolant tank and was moving those hoses around. I wonder if I opened a crack? How many miles did you find this at? I'm at 116k. just an fyi, Those intakes are not safe, the back of center can fall off and go down into your turbo. The bms intakes don't have the metal thing in the center. know this from experience.. just a heads up.

Robert Ace did it throw a code? Could be a number of things, maybe a misfire due to bad coils or something. I would also suggest checking your chargepipe!

Wassup bro my 335i gave me a "battery charge low" sign while I had my key in ignition and car on (but engine was off) door open, and phone charging. It happens after I had finished repairing my cup holder and as soon as it turned on i turned car completely off and took it for a drive this happened yesterday and has been driving perfectly fine since with no more warning sign. Rain Xanity A bad battery isnt a serious issue to stress over. Take it to an auto parts store and have them test the charge to test the battery life! Sometimes i believe the battery is fine it just needs a recharge!

Hi SCT...i have the same car as u...so recently my car does not start...i pushed start and got my car started and brought it to the German shop near by..."my car runs perfectly fine"...so they told me it was the starter n i argreed to fix it...so they got my car started n running again and now the engine lights is on and the half engine thing is on...they told me i need a turbo boost control valv before i even get a chance to drive my car. Now my car running slower than a civic..I dont think im getting any boost at all..if u read this or anyone..Can u help me to figure this out...What does changing a starter and now needing a turbo boost control valve gotta do together? What were ur symptoms ? I have an issue w my 1m. When I go hard on gas in higher gear it stuffers. Today racing a rs4 it went to limp mode. I pulled over and restarded it, the Engine light went off and when read it with the odb 2 reader I have no codes. Any ideas what it might be ? Coils?

My symptoms were no boost and the car felt very slow as if the turbos were not functioning at all. It was because of that torn vacuum line. In your case it may be a misfire? or perhaps a boost leak as well

Hi, I got this limp mode problem for a while now when I fully accelerate. However it doesnt happen all the time, some time it does, some time is doesn't. Is it normal that the limp mode happens just occasionally when for example the turbos have to be replaced? Or should turbos always fail when they are 'broken' / have to be replaced?

hi, i dont know if you have solved your problem yet, but i have the same issue. im thinking that it is either my fuel injector, coil, or plug. i tried switching the plugs around and my misfires were not following it so i thought it was a bad plug. but the misfires started jumping to a random cylinder after that so now im thinking its buildup in the fuel injectors. what i did was i bought some royal purple fuel treatment and drove the car 30 miles, the next day i ran the car at around 4k rpm for around 30 minutes then drove normally to cool the car down. after that i let the car sit and tried accelerating again. under hard acceleration my car does not go into limp mode anymore and the misfires have not shown up again. so im guessing it was just dirty fuel injectors. we will see if i get a misfire again within the next couple weeks. good luck

My E46 Automatic 150K 3 series has an "S" next to the gears PRND. Safe mode, but goes away if i wiggle it to the right place/gear, like there's a certain spot that the stick shift have to be and if you ever so slightly move it, it goes to Safe mode and after a while, it goes to Limp mode with COG. Would anyone know if this would cause the p3090 (high pressure fuel pump) code? I literally jist replaced the drivers side motor mount and then started it to see this happen and that code to be thrown. I am hoping it was my fault in pinching or not connecting a vent hose as I took apart the top airbox and moved a few lines on the drivers side. It seems like a longshot but it would really suck going from one issue one day to literally a hpfp going out not even a drive later.

I highly doubt it's a hpfp issue. Most likely limp mode occurs when there is a boost leak somewhere

well everything was going great with my mhd stage 1+ ,till today now im getting misfires on Cyl 6 (30F1) and Super Knocking on Cyl 5, Afr goes upto 240 plus (normally round 14 on both banks i thought ,looks like im gonna have to go the plugs first ,injectors .no boost leaks getting upto 15psi ,i think the issue is caused a failing plug, or injectors....,best start saving again .......sigh.......

@@kevincastro75 ,faulty coils they were failing at over 2500rpm in sport and M ,but not in D as is changes gear earlier ,i replaced plugs also at same time to rule out plugs issues ,still running fine

Hey all you good people out there :) Here it’s the problem I have. I’ve got 2007 bmw 335 I Lately hi started to drain the battery out somehow, either I have a short somewhere or whatever ...so that been said one morning after obviously was so dead I couldn’t even unlock the door to get in. So I used key and open the door manually,open the hood,get my other car,busted up,get inside,now I’ve got the power,but the key in,I push the start button and red light came on the dash. I’m pushing the button,nothing! And steering wheel is locked also immediately. So how the *uck do I fix this problem from happening again? Is there any tricks to it??? Adam that's probably related to a fuel injectors or high pressure fuel pump. I had this issue for the past two years and my pump finally died. Looking to replace all injectors with index 12 as well

I don’t think so usually the coolant light would come up, I just got the “engine malfunction, reduce power” Was driving fine in town till I hopped on the freeway & did a pull

Check for a boost leak. That's normally the most common thing but it could be a number of issues

off course it was a vacuum leak... i've replaced atleast 3 ft of vacuum hoses on my e46. I replaced them with silicone ones from FCP euro, they are holding up great i haven't had a leak in 2 years. BMW doesn't really give a fuck they use plastic impellers on the e46's water pump... that is juse insane so off course they dont care about spending a dollar extra on silicone hoses.

I couldn't agree more! My E46 had dry-rotted and crumbling vacuum lines everywhere when I purchased it; meanwhile the 25 year old JDM 6-bolt in my Talon has all stock lines that still look brand new! Look at the VANOS seals on the E46, cheap rubber instead of Viton so they fail in less than 20k!? BMW's official response to the sub-par quality: "the component requires no further development." Are you freaking kidding me!? I know the pennies add up when you mass-produce a vehicle, but BMW saddens me with how they knowingly cut corners at the expense of reliability/longevity on simple, basic parts. I'm so glad there are so many shops and owners willing to produce new parts that fix these problems because, as you said, BMW doesn't seem to care in the least.

v2mmxst10 couldnt agree more. As a fellow BMW enthusiast in pains me to say that BMW does this so commonly, but how can someone not speak up about it? My car retailed for nearly $56k brand new! And they cut corners with basic components such as a vacuum hose! Absolutely ridiculous
