My 41 Most Anticipated Book Releases of 2023!

Doing this by month was a WAY better idea than I had. Here are some thoughts as I watch: - I really need to try Ryan Cahill. Steve Talks Books has been in my ear about it. He even called me out in front of the author, ha ha - Very much looking forward to Tyranny of Faith! Netgalley has had me on "pending" for 2 weeks now - I still haven't read Ember Blade but on my Discord they've been bullying me about reading it, finally - I did not join the Sanderson Kickstarter, so I'll be reading the secret project books when/if physical versions are available to us plebs - Fonda Lee had her publicist send me an ARC of Untethered Sky, so I'll be doing that in the Spring - James Islington earned my trust with Licanius where I will give whatever comes next a try, for sure - Light Bringer is my most anticipated book of the year, zero doubt. Cannot wat! - I hope you enjoy Sun Eater. Christopher is an amazing guy & he's super talented - Looks like it was a fortunate thing that I haven't started Manifest Delusions yet since it'll be completed next year Thanks for the rundown! You're welcome, Mike! I love doing this kind of video for months! I think chronologic is the easiest way for me to organize my list of anticipated releases. I think you'll love The Ember Blade and also Ryan Cahill's books. Maybe not the first book but the sequel! Both Ember Blade and Ryan Cahill's books reminded me of reading Gwynne's books. And I just got an eARC of Tyranny of Faith, so excited for this one. So crazy that Netgalley put you on pending for two months for this! Thankfully you did get a copy of Untethered Sky, I own that one already and this will be my first time reading Fonda's books outside of The Green Bone Saga. I am so pumped to read Islington's newest book and my number 1 most anticipated new release, LIGHT BRINGER! No idea whether Red God will be out next year or not, but I hope it does. The same goes for Sun Eater. I definitely will read this series next year. After taking a break from sci-fi and space opera for almost an entire year, I've been craving some awesome sci-fi/space opera series! Also, Manifest Delusion is so messed up and insane, you're gonna love it!

If all these books live up to our expectations, then 2023 is going to be an absolute killer of a reading year! I also have an ARC for The Shadow Casket, but I am thinking about rereading book 1 as well. In fact, there are lots of series continuations that are gonna require a reread, but I am not even mad about it because I am so excited for all of them! And The Eleventh Cycle sounds SOOO good, I need that one to be out already!! Your content is extremely relevant to the world of books. Too, I wonder where narrators fit into the scheme of things. When I started networking with booktubers, I found very few would reciprocate. Several would respond to comments. And few would be interested in what I do at all. At any rate, I've found it difficult to understand. Taking on the entire series of the wars of light and shadow by Janny Wurts is a major undertaking. Please give it the time to understand it and grasp the sheer scale of this series. It’s up there with the Malazan book of the fallen and wheel of time for world building, complexity of plot & characters. Saying that I envy you the fact you get to read this series completely and for the first time. For me there is the bitter-sweet situation of getting to read another Janny Wurts book but it being the last one in this epic series.

That's true! I did start and finish Malazan Book of the Fallen in the span of three months. I don't think I can do that for Wars of Light and Shadow. But if I don't finish it in 2023, it's okay. What matters more is to read and absorb everything as much as I can! :)

My most anticipated release on this list is The Tyranny of Faith. Can't wait, because my god was The Justice of Kings good. One of the best books I read last year (along with Jade Legacy, Boy's Life, and The Hunger of the Gods).

Here are a few of 2023 SFF + Horror releases that I anticipate: "The Scourge Between Stars" - Ness Brown, "Lone Women" - Victor LaValle, "The Water Outlaws" - S. L. Huang (thar cover reveal sealed the deal) and the short story "The Lies of Ajungo" by Moses Ose Utomy. Let's hope we get to all those amazing books next year.

Finally I can organize my reading plans without that nagging worry in the back of my head that I've forgotten a release I really wanted to catch. Thank you so much for the list, Petrik! Though you did further expand my already Godzilla sized TBR.😉 Finished the Black Shriving yesterday, and gave it 4.5 stars. I honestly don't see why you rated it so low. Well, tastes differ, I guess. There was actually very little romance in it and all the storylines were unpredictable to me. And the pacing was great and the action was brilliant. I'm loving the Chronicles of the Black Gate thus far. Looking forward to binging the rest.

You're welcome! Yeah, The Black Shriving just didn't work for me. It could be I get tired of the author's prose easily. I binged Black Gate and gave up with it by the 3rd book. I tried reading Bastion by Tucker, his new book and his most highly praised one, and I DNFed it at around 25%. I hope you'll love the rest of the series, though!

From this list, I would say my most anticipated books are the Secret Projects, The Sapphire Altar, Aiduel's Sin, The Tyranny of Faith, and Defiant. Aside from these, I would add Tsalmoth by Steve Brust. It is the 16th book in the Vlad Taltos series, which has been ongoing for 40 years.

Glad you loved The Sapphire Altar! I really enjoyed The Bladed Faith, too! And I recommend reading The Fall first if you're going to dive into Ryan Cahill's books so you can get an idea of the improvement in writing you can get from his books. Of Blood and Fire is good but nothing amazing. And yes, definitely read Jen William's books! I hope Champion of the Fallen will come out in 2023! :)

In February I am looking forward to the release of A Day Of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon, prequel to The Priory Of The Orange Tree. I have read up to Empire of Grass (Book 2) in The Last King of Osten Ard by Tad Williams. I don't know if I will complete the series yet. Yes I am really looking forward to Talonsister by Jen Williams as well! I just reread the Winnowing Flame trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed it again. One more release I am looking forward to is The Hexologists by Josiah Bancroft. He said in a recent interview the expected release is in November 2023. Happy reading!

He's announced that he'll most likely be finished writing it by Christmas so there's hope 🤞 I'm both glad and depressed at the same time that Fonda Lee is writing and releasing more stories in the Green Bone Saga universe because oing with Subterranean Press means it'll be super pricey... 😔

I'm also looking forward to Tyranny of Faith and Untethered Sky, tho' usually l can't afford to buy new trad pub releases so will wait for the price to go down a bit. I will definitely get Waybound straightaway and read it immediately too! I'm also looking forward to Will Wight's new series. If he keeps his schedule of releasing 2 books a year, then we maybe get the first book in the new series as well. Petrik, if you're on speaking terms with Nicolas Lietzau, can you please ask him regarding any update on the brilliantly narrated audiobook by Ben Britton? The prologue and first chapter have been on KZbin for over a year now. Maybe he was busy with the Enderal-Twelfth World fiasco and that delayed the audiobook production. I've only read the first 2 chapters of the book and am waiting for the audiobook to be released to continue reading. I also feel he's an author who could use a bit more public attention, so even a future author interview if possible, would be a great thing.

I don't think so. Nicholas Eames has mentioned the third book most likely won't be coming out next year. And Gwynne, after the passing of her daughter, I don't think he'll be able to finish the book in 2023. As for Evan Winter, I haven't heard anything else regarding the release of the third book. IF they somehow come out next year, I'll read them ASAP, though! :D

Can you let us know if books you read have lgbt characters. I read foundryside based upon your recommendation and I was really disappointed by the gay love aspect of the main character. I really dont enjoy anything LGBTQ.

Not sure what issue you have with LGBTQ characters, but I think you might as well stay away from reading most modern fantasy books now then. Almost all of them have LGBTQ characters.

Sorry to say, but the Bone Shard Emperor was a major disappointment for me. Loved the first book, but this one made the characters majorly unlikeable, it’s got pacing issues, plot devices that are too convenient, a forced romance subplot… middle book syndrome x1000. Everyone else seems to like it, I’ll be curious to watch your review whenever you get to it.
