for "mistake 4" id also like to share the other side of this mistake... and that is getting into the perfect deficit for your activity amount, increasing your activity higher, and then beating yourself up for being ravenously hungry. I fell into this pitfall very hard whilst training for a half marathon, its very easy to forget how much energy your body uses for things like that, so being weirdly starving that day (or even the day after) is normal

After FOUR years of not having my period, I’m pretty sure I’m set to give you some advice. First, I’d start with eating 2500 calories. It’s recommended by the author No Period, Now What. 2500 is a lot... DONT COME AT ME WITH “I’m a tiny human, so I don’t need that much.” Hahaha. But no Marisa! I am also a tiny human. I’m 5’1 and 115 right now, but getting my period back by eating 2500 really worked and it restored my metabolism! Within a month of eating this much, my period came back. Hopefully you give this a try
@MissFitAndNerdy
@MissFitAndNerdy 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice but I didn’t lose my period from under-eating, restriction, overtraining, being under weight, etc. I didn’t even “lose my period.” I quit taking hormones. So my body just needs to re-regulate itself. I don’t need to overeat to compensate for under-eating. Besides, I’m eating close to 2200-2300 calories per day anyway. Not everyone’s journey (nor root cause) is the same and therefore not everyone needs to follow the same steps :)

I really appreciate this video. I’ll be 25 in two months and realize that I’m not 19 anymore. My body is not 19 anymore, and so I’m not going to lose the weight like I had when I was 19, and I’m not going to be as low in weight as I was when I was 19. Lifestyle factors.

@@MissFitAndNerdy exactly! The 20s was so much easier ,tho it really does make it harder biologically when you get into your late 30s and 40s. So much harder 😫 pretty much any time after your 30s you notice this shift. I used to think when I was in my 20s, when older people would tell me wait till your 30s wait till your 40s. MissFitAndNerdy actually hormones effect the female body in such a way that makes it very hard to lose weight, as I’m sure you are experiencing right now with going off birth control. Women’s hormones change throughout adulthood....isn’t that something that was talked about in Beyond the Pill? Should have been. That’s a huge factor. And it’s biological.

Thank you so much for being so open about "failing'. I feel like a lot of fitness influencers will never show that side of their journey, so it can be so easy for people to think that unless you're perfect with your food, exercise and everything else, you're not doing it right.

Yeah, one influencer that I've been following on and off for a while lost about 20lbs not too long ago and in her video about it, she said she had been struggling for a while but if you had been watching her content until then, you wouldn't have seen any struggle. I realized how unfortunate it was that she didnt share her whole journey--all the ups and downs--along the way because it would have been really insightful to have seen that. So I decided I wanted to document the whole thing to make sure I conveyed realistic expectations

I feel like that’s the biggest piece of advise I wish I knew when starting to life “heavy” a year or so ago. I would try and push myself way too fast because I saw all these other people lifting just big numbers that I would overdo it and be out resting for a week from one life. Heavy is relative!!!! 💛✨ I would have gotten a way way way better workout and seen results if I pushed the weight for what was heavy for MY body and not someone else’s.

I'm nearly twice your age, and have never been as fit as you are, but for some reason you have me believing I can do this. I am also nerdy and I used to be sporty, but I always hated lifting weights, even though I did it off and on. Then Andrew Huberman got me believing that doing things that kinda suck will help juice more dopamine out of my brain, so I started resistance training. Now it's a habit and I want to get the most out of it. I am former physical therapist, so the basics of training are second nature to me, but the idea of reverse dieting for me has been a game changer. I had been doing half a year of IF and lost 45 lbs, but when I started tracking calories, I realized that I had to eat less than 900 calories/day to lose weight. I knew I had a problem. I stopped trying to cut weight, and just started strength training and getting more exercise generally, and just eating more intuitively. I didn't lose any weight during the next two months. I did DEXA/RMR/VO2max testing, and the problem could not have been more clear. That month I hired a coach, and the first thing she said was, "I want you eating more. I want you eating more protein and more carbs." I have been doing that for 2 and a half weeks and although I am not losing weight, my clothes are getting roomier, and I have been eating about 300 calories more than I was before. The idea of cutting from a much higher maintenance calorie level just seems so "duh" now.

HELLO! Thank you!! It’s definitely possible that you’ve been mentally blocking yourself from weight loss. With the monster that is diet culture, it’s easy to get tricked and fooled and accidentally trick yourself into not losing weight. However, if you do suspect any underlying health issues, I recommend seeing a functional medicine doctor or naturopath. In my experience, nutritionists don’t give the best advice and definitely don’t have the medical knowledge to diagnose underlying health issues.

After that I crash dieted, which was way worse. The shakes were gross and I had no energy (duh). I once went vegetarian and learned that my body isn't great at processing plant proteins... Around 4 months in, I re-listened to all the info on cycle syncing and since I've been doing that for 3 months now, it's easier to stay in a deficit, it's easier to not binge but maintain during the luteal phase, I stopped getting migraines, I am sooo much less bloated in general and I used to be bloated -alot-. Now it genuinely "feels" like my body is ready to start shedding some fat, because it's feeling generally more happy and healthy.

I think it's really hard to know when to stop pushing yourself to be "healthier" as in working out consistently, trying to manage stress, trying to sleep more, trying to eat healthier because sometimes trying to have everything balanced is stressful in itself! It doesnt help that sometimes life just throws curveballs at you and that sort of slows down your health journey. I have been weightlifting for about 3 months and have also been on a reverse diet for 3 months. Starting from last week I was feeling really sluggish and my mind my foggy (this was one week before the start of my period so that explains a lot) and this week I felt even worse and I just couldnt focus on my workouts. So then today I suddenly panicked and felt like everything was going wrong and started to binge eat. Looking back at today I realize my body was telling me to rest and get more sleep and focus on my health rather than trying to lose fat or panicking that I wasnt working hard enough in the gym. Thank you Marisa always♡ im trying my best and its nice to always have you by my side! (Even if its through youtube haha)

Hi, I * think * you read these so I'll tell my coming-off-the-pill story. I had had irregular periods before starting the pill in my teens (like 40-60 day cycles). I was on it for maybe 5 years solid (age 17-22 or so) (just turned 26 now). When I first went off it I think I gained a lil weight. But come to think of it this time period I had huge mindset shifts. Like move to another city and change jobs for 3 months followed by becoming nomadic for 1+ years. May have been hormone related of going thru a "finding myself" period. FIRST 6 mo or so off: I got a basal body temp thermometer and was using that to track my cycles. My cycles were irregular and usually about 35 days. Then I focused on low stress and syncing with the moon (start period on new moon) and had PERFECT cycles for a few months. Life events (and a gyn-related health procedure) happened and I ended up getting full-blown ammenorrhea for NINE months. I was so fixated on getting my period back and obsessed and it was making me stressed in this vicious cycle. I finally got it back with a gyn scrip for 5 days of low dose progesterone (and meditating on it which i seriously think did the heavy lifting) and things were normal again for a while. A few times since then my cycle has sometimes been longer and I've CRACKED THE CODE for my *personal self* on getting it synced back up to the new moon WITH CONSISTENT results. 1. Meditating on the moon/divine feminine woo-woo stuff/staying aware of i and believing i am attuned 2. Maca powder for a few days in the week before it should be starting. 3. During the week before new moon I always take measure to do "all in" type activities. Extra chocolate, let my voice be heard, naps whenever etc. It's MY time. 4. Maintaining good sleep and stress levels. 5. MAKE PHYSICAL CONTACT with other females regularly. Now that i'm off the pill i'm grateful for my body to have another mode of communication to tell me when somethings off. So when I am off, I can look at my life and get back to homeostasis. Now I'm synced and I can FEEL when the moon is full and I get really good signals from my body about a week beforehand.

I’m currently 15, 5’4 , and around 138 lbs. I started my weight loss journey around March and things were going really good until I didn’t see big changes like I used to. So I did some research and I read somewhere that going into a caloric deficit really helps. I didn’t really understood what it was and I still kinda don’t but all I knew was that I had to burn more calories than I consume. I would go on the treadmill until I was exhausted and would only burn about 500 calories so I started eating like 400 calories everyday. I did this for a while and was really happy with how I looked but I didn’t realize how badly it messed up my body. I’ve been trying to reverse diet (I’m now consuming about 800-900 calories) but every time I eat 100calories more than I used to I would just break down every time. I’m so scared to gain weight and lately I’ve been noticing parts of my body gain a bit of fat like my face and I hate it so much. Every time I look in the mirror I want to go back to eating 400 calories so I can look skinny again. Please help what should I do?

@ellaizcool

hi!! idk if this is still affecting you (hopefully not and hopefully this comment isn’t a triggering reminder), but one important thing to know is that there’s actually another way that you burn calories too! i used to think the same thing as you, and have no idea how i was supposed to burn 1500+ calories through exercise per day and i began to undereat, but i learned that the MAIN way you burn calories is just a stagnant amount that happens every day based on your metabolism. you already burn hundreds of calories just through your sleep, moving around, picking up a bag, tapping your leg, etc etc. you’re constantly burning calories and you don’t need to exercise to burn all of your food off. the KEY though!! is that like i said, it’s based on your metabolism!! and if you are starving yourself (aka eating less than 1300 calories per day), your body’s metabolism will naturally slow down and start storing food and fat. the only way you can start burning a lot of calories through the day aside from exercise and be able to eat more and lose more weight than starving yourself is to actually eat enough food, sleep enough, and drink enough water. i know it sounds crazy, but the average person burns almost 2000 calories doing NOTHING everyday and even sitting burns 75 calories per hour, but ONLY if you’re sustaining your body with healthy foods and eating enough for it to fully process and not store everything it eats like a chipmunk. i truly hope you’re doing better and your relationship with food is better. you don’t need to suffer

I cut out soda and didnt buy my old snack food, but i didn't see as big of a difference as i was hoping for. looking back i wasn't getting enough sleep and that probably was a big factor😅 now i make sure to get at least 7 hrs 😄

When I went off the pill it took 2 years for my period to fully regulate back to normal. I went from having 3 month stints to 6 weeks now it's once a month. Well before I got pregnant lol. But it took about 2 years for it to fully go back to a "normal" period.

I’ve recently made mistakes too. I’ve always eaten a really low amount of calories. So I started a reverse diet. I was so much stronger in my lifting. I slept like a baby. I was hardly ever cold anymore. But once I got up to 2000 calories a day, I started to feel like my clothes was feeling tighter and I retreated back to 1300 to lose weight fast instead of letting my body level set. That was in January. I’ve been yo-yoing ever since. Now I’m too scared to do anything differently because I don’t want my body to change and not be able to fit my wedding dress.

I did almost the same things you did. But I got my period back immediately so I just assumed that my hormones and my body where perfectly fine and balanced after 3 years of birth control pill, but... surprise surprise they were not. It took me almost 6 months to feel free from the pill again and feel healthy and balanced

right at the beginning of quarantine, I quit birth control. that, along with the drop in activity and increase in appetite for quitting birth control, I gained weight! Around 3-4 lbs, which shows on a 5’0 gal. I JUST got my period back last weekend (yay!) hopefully now my body is regulated and I can start losing the fat now :-)

You look great and appear to be at a very healthy weight. Maybe you should stop tracking and eat intuitively for a while as your body regulates itself. I’m 43 and have four daughters. My body has been through lots of changes, but I just try to get in my 10,000 steps each day, and do some type of additional exercise as well, like riding my horses, or even doing farm work. I try to eat intuitively and I am fit and happy not having to obsess over it. I enjoy your channel so much, keep up the good work!

I am at a healthy weight! :) as I acknowledged in the video, there’s nothing wrong with my body at the moment and I love it as is! The troubling thing is that if I continue to gain weight at the rate that I’m gaining, I won’t be at a healthy weight too much longer. So even though I’m not focusing on weight loss anymore, I do need to make sure I don’t keep gaining

I have made all of those mistakes especially the first one. It turns out I have coeliac and at the time I was cutting and overexercising to lose fat but not taking into consideration my body health or gut health. I ended up with amenorrhea for over a year!!! I had to significantly limit my exercise, change my diet to increase my calories and I went to acupuncture once a week in order to address that. Then I started back at the gym and pushed myself too hard because I had fixed one issue and was expecting to be able to lift and exercise the same amount as before. I ended up damamging my body, I was bloated and highly inflamed from the stress that I had caused on my body. Overall I have struggled for the last 2 years to find a balance between food, training, my body and my mental health. Your videos are insightful and an inspiration, thank you!

Amother lovely video thank you. I believe these tips work...A routine and a plan for your food is a great way to stay on track. A lot of people also find compressing the window during which you consume calories can also help. I also find that cutting down on carbs can help, instead of grains and sugar, focus on non starchy vegetables, quality protein and fats. Exercise is great. But you can't out run a poor diet!

I have an issue and maybe you might be able to share some of your knowledge on the topic, I REALLY struggle with consistently hitting my healthy, higher macros due to feeling full ALL OF THE TIME. First thing in the morning, after going hours with minimal food, i didn't eat much the day before, after a high intensity cardio session etc. Is getting past that feeling of fullness and nausea of feeling full something that will only happen in time if I've managed to be consistent with eating more or is this issue something I should see a professional about? (For reference, I have had anorexia for over a twelve years, doing much better in terms of the mental torture of the illness but this fullness thing is really not helping with my attempts at a whole-hearted, "complete" recovery!😫) Thanks Marisa! All the best with achieving a better balance with your health x😀😊

Hey! Without knowing the exact context of how much you’re eating, though I assume you’re trying to eat to complete satiety for recovery, I would recommend playing around with different food groups to see what makes it easier to eat more. Smoothies are really great because you can pack in a TON of calories (my fav smoothie is 700-1000 cal) and it’s really easy to consume because it’s liquid. Liquid calories in general help a lot-I love making healthy hot chocolate with cacao butter to get some good healthy fats. Try adding some more quick digesting carbs too like white rice. But also play around with adding more fats since they are more calorie dense and take up less volume. And yes! It will get easier and easier to eat more as your body adjusts :)

My mistake is literally forgetting we had take out the other day and wondering why I put on a pound this week 🙄 (that and also period) This in itself points to my "i cba to plan" and also letting myself go "Oh it's only X, that's fine" and yaknow what? ooooffff, I feel called out, in a good way. I tend to compare myself t where I used to be. I am expecting myself to be at the level I was before my injuries. I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that just because I "look" healthy, doesn't mean I am at that same level (physically with my energy level and endurance, mentally and energetically, etc). And that's ok, but showing myself compassion for being in this state is so necessary.

Yes definitely wait to get your period back, hopefully it sorts itself out soon. My mistakes are trying to be too restrictive in diet. F any diet which doesnt contain chocolate or burgers. It's easier for me to be in a calorie deficit than to eat a restricted diet with no calorie deficit. Another one is dont forget the refeeds or diet breaks. I am doing 2 week diets 2 week breaks to lose my covid weight gain bc i dont want it to mess with my muscle gains too much.
