I am a canadian who lived in Korea for a year. Here are the things that gave me culture shock: 1) when at a red traffic light, peiple ALWAYS go through the red light if there are no cars coming. This just doesnt happen in canada. 2) i saw people.passing ambulances with sirens on as though the emergency didnt matter. In Canada you just dont do that. 3) i saw couples physically fighting eachother. The man hitting the woman. Although this happens in canada, it doesnt happen in public and a man hitting a woman is frowned upon. In korea ( at least in 2010) it is more common to see in public and considered the business of the couple involved.

Hi Meiling, I really enjoyed this video. I am a Canadian who has been teaching English in Taiwan for the past 21 years. My Chinese is bu hao 😒unfortunately. I certainly experienced culture shock here. To a Canadian it seems very odd that a group a people who are quite open about asking your age and salary within a few minutes of meeting you, are so reticent about telling you other (more interesting) things about themselves. I think you can be very proud of the personal growth you've obviously experienced while in Canada as you have adapted so successfully to a completely different culture. Take care! Patricia

Thank you Patricia! Wow you have so much experience teaching and immersing in a different culture from your own. I have to say asking about age and salary is like a common topic in Chinese culture, especially older generations like to ask 😂 I see how that gave you culture shock considering it’s different in Canadian culture.
