First off... 👏🏾😁 BRAVO!!! You did a lot with a little, and you didn't it your way! You had a very reliable, consistent, and effective setup. I'd do a Lil R&D find out what went wrong and build it back stronger. I absolutely love Gen 3s, but going that route will be time/$ just to get into the car. Then, more time/$ on a stand alone, learning how to tune it and make it work. Either way, step back, take a deep breath, and make your decision on a clear non emotional mind. Great content bruh keep it up!

I love the 383! Build it up and use RB or Hemi rods and pay attention to the oil passages, and it should rev at 7,000 rpm. Of course you’ll have to pay attention to the build, oil drain back, strong enough top end etc. but it should do what you want it too.
@turbojoe9554

I've broken quite a few small block Ford's the same fashion. On those, I attribute it to the weaknesses in the block. Especially the 302's, the bottom ends are pretty weak on those. 351w, the main webs are very thin and often blow the main webbing completely out of the block. Sometimes it's just one web and if that's the case the oil pressure will be about 10-15 psi lower than normal, but it can run a long time like that. Then all at once, the crank breaks. The block is supporting the crank, without that support the crank flexes and breaks. Eagle cranks are more commonly broken for whatever reason. I personally think that the cross-drilling that Eagle uses may contribute, but I don't think they're "weak" by any means. Weak(er)? Maybe. 302's and 289's will crack the main webs right up through the oil holes., through the lifter valley area, down the back and front bulkheads. Then when you unbolt the intake manifolds and main caps, sometimes the 2 banks will just fall away from each other. Point being,I would not be the least bit surprised if 318 blocks aren't also weak in those same areas. After all, they are passenger car blocks that are designed for maybe 300hp and 5500-6000 RPM max. Then we double the power and increase the RPM for which the OE blocks weren't designed for.
@alexgrindnshine2522

Interesting. I have heard of the ford blocks breaking in half around 500hp. I do know the 318 block weights around 40 pounds more then the ford block and has a higher nickel content. So I thinking they have a good amount of strength over the 302 351w blocks.

Gonna need a lot of JB Weld for that one.....just kidding. Nice car! Love the underdog 318 stories. The teardown reveals a lot regarding the cross-sectional thickness of the front of the block, main bearing webs, and main bearing caps. Also a good look at the overlap area of the crankshaft between journals. All of these areas can be a lot thinner than they appear before the breakage. Just curious as to what the original (first) failure was. That broken main bearing cap makes me think that may have been where it started. Good luck with the next itteration!

I own two 5.7s ... I honestly feel like they are way better engine designs compared to the older LA small blocks, especially the Hemi heads ... the 392 heads flow 340 cfm straight from the factory w/o port work... they have stroker kits for those blocks that go up to 450+ cubic inches... u won't get that kind of displacement out of a 318 block ...

That's worse than when my brother blew up his 318 in his Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue. The thing lost oil pressure while he was going down Route 80 at 70 miles an hour. When I pulled the oil pan off, the crank journals were blued!!! Not only that, but all the rod and main bearings looked like pieces of cut-up Coke cans, literally squished out the sides of all the rod caps and main caps. It had looked like someone cut up a Coke can and took the pieces and clamp the rod caps right over them. Yeah I thought the blue crankshaft with coke can rod bearings was the worst one I've seen, but yours Beat It. It reminds me of that biker that got into a bad accident and was still alive, despite the fact that he lost his lower jaw and most of his lower face. You can barely see his eyes, then everything else was gone. just a tongue hanging there. The same cringe I get from looking at that guy, I get from looking at your motor. 👉🤯👈💯💯

Man that 318 did it's job put down some passes whoop some procharger cars and went out with a bang. You proved that the 67-69 318's are nothing to joke about but I am pretty sure you maxed out what it can do. But with all those hemi block's brother you could be making some serious power with bolt ons and a single turbo a 5.7 can make 800-900+ plus with a good tune. If you build another 318/340. The factory made steel forged cranks. Run a good forged crank with a stud girdle for the bottom end. As much he'll as your putting the engine through it needs that to keep the bottom end from flexing. The new hemis the 5.7 have a weak bottom end and prone to shooting rods. So either way there's a 2k hit.

I'm glad you didn't wreck the car putting that much oil under the tires. Wow, that hurts. Gotta balance things like the rods to where all of them weigh EXACTLY the same to a tenth of a gram. Pistons too. Engine balance prevents a lot of this. Also enough valve to piston clearance to allow for heat expansion. Enough valve spring to rev that high for a couple hundred passes.

go for a small block, the 318's and other mopars are pretty bulletproof. a hemi wont exactly last as long and i have heard they are prone to some pretty bad issues(dont go for any blocks 2012 or earlier, they are weak) and their cranks even factory cant handle boost. stick with what works the best for you which is the small block mopars. my next upgrade suggestion is to go for a 323 or 360(built on the same 318 block)

The bearing that was showed and how the block scattered ,looks to me like the mains walked . Don’t know if they make a 4bolt cap or a 6 bolt cap with side bolts to keep it from flexing like the Chevy LS block. Funny thought in my collection of books the authors says a 318 Canadian block is very heavy duty,lots of meat in bottom end. See if you can find one and see the difference.I’d say the block flexed caused a shock wave through the crank and caused the caps to bounce.

Before I saw clearly what was damaged I suspected this one had 2 bolts and though they are strong ,600 HP was probably more then they were designed for. looking forward to weeing where you take this project next.

Hey bud I love that you were giving the 318s love. I'd keep running them to be honest. 7k is a little much for the chrysler small block. 6400 is usually were you want to be. I've never seen someone destroy a 318 like that so my hats off to you.

You may have junked it... BUT GLORY FOREVER! That's a bad ass looking car. Maybe we can run em down track sometime. Fuel the brand rivalry.

OUCH!!! 😯 What's the best the car ran with that combo? How long was it together? And lastly what's that car weigh? I'd definitely do another small block combo for now myself. As doing the retro-fit wouldn't be anything I'd want to hurry on... That would be a long-term project I'd start in Nov. A 340/416 kit or a 360/408 kit would be my starting point personally

I assume that’s a cast crank. I’d like to see how well it would hold together with a steel crank. You already have the right combination there.

I’d say stick with the LA, but would like to know what crank and rods you had and what oil mods did you do, if any. Would like to know the cause of the failure and build it better.

Well you already have the heads, intake and carb for a small block, plus the car is setup for a small block so if you ask me grab one of the 340's or the 318 you have sitting there, throw a rotating assembly in it, bolt the top end on and drop the new engine in. BUT! you do have all those hemi's laying around, and we all know them gen 3's can make some wicked power, so if you're really feeling up to hemi swapping it now would be the time. Best of luck, hope to see the Barracuda back up and running soon.

Should have zoomed in on the frost plugs for the ney sayers too. That was a nasty motor. What a shame. Are those stock rods? What crank? I want to see the 318 A cause it’s wicked and B cause it’s more period correct. Having said that how can it not be a grenade with the pin pulled. The 5.7 would be boring but more reliable I’m sure. Lol.

Any clue as to what triggered this failure? Was the crank reground?

Well I just saw the carnage that was 318 and now it should become a shrine of inspiration. Where to go from here ??? Here is my 2 cents of advice. Fyi I've been driving mopars since I was 17 so almost 40 years and my first car i bought was a 1969 Dart GTS 340 4 speed car, and my first vround jp bud was my 69 dart GT convertible that I pulled the 318 and put in a 440 / 727 auto , 8.75 with 3.55 sure grip. Still have her and i bought that car in 1989. i share this with you to let you know my 2 cents is valid info So first consideration is budget next is time frame ,next is what is your style? Are you junkyard buy and drop it and go , or taking the engine and go through it , run if up before it goes into your a body barracuda? I was exactly where you are now , when Covid began. My 340 cam went flat and metal destroyed the engine. Not quite to the level as yours. So I started putting lists together for what I was going to need for going 1 of 3 ways. Repair and rebuild the 340, or a LA small block, or go big block. Last the hemi upgrade option. So my approach has been, it only is original once so that was my avenue. In Ca. where I live engine builders / machine shops have closed up , moved , retired or for quit and said fy to Ca. The 340 had been built 2 previous times prior. You can get a new hemi 5.7 new from mopar for 6k + tax and shipping. ,There are alot of companies like ATK that want 4k for a reman 5.7. if your approach is budget and use what you have, than go thtu the heads and have them gone through looking for dropped valve seats on the exaust valves. i ended up getting a blue print 408 stroker and it took over a year for it to be built dynoed and shipped out to me. I went all in with fuel injection and serpentine accessories drive kit. 12.5 k was total . Tax was 1200 by itself. I had maxed out my C.c and had made my choice. The hemi conversion is harder on A Bodies because the parts available for B and E bodies are not available for us. That is changing day by day. The path I want to take is bring the convertible into the 21st century with a full frame 4 link and coil overs and everything from cooling with A/C 4 wheel disc brakes etc. The parts to get the engine up and running on a stand, ready to be dropped in was 20k.for me because I didn't Have an engine to use as a core nod transmission. So the accessories, headers , holly controller etc. Not sure how much of the work you. Were going todo. For by budget that sas 0 dollars for labor. Since i do my own work. This was the budget build numbers. I knew things were going to be more when all was said in done.. While I was waiting on my engine i found a few other options. 1 mopar itroduced the Hellephant summit wanted 50k, the prices have dropped a bit. They also released a New 340 six pack engine carbs to pan 20k. over in Australia they started selling new 340 engines complete 15k US and would take months to to get .here. In closing if you have everything to build a LA engine put one in go that route, and unless you have forged crankshaft 7000 rpm should be avoided. Starting to fall asleep.hope the numbers helped . I wish you luck and am very sorry for your loss.

Please, not another Hemi swap. I had that idea myself for my Duster years ago, but now when everybody does it it's way cooler to go 318! You have learned a lot and next 318 you build will be even better!
