I just want to be clear (perhaps my fault for cutting a lot out of the vid for time) I'm fully aware of Jamaicans being of African descent and that being a result of slavery that's particularly why I wanted to find my roots in Africa (and is the case for many PoC) because our records only go so far.. When I said I thought I would have 'indigenous Caribbean' I was referring to taino/arawak purely because of the afore mentioned 'maroon' heritage my mum was told of (some maroons were mix of taino and african slaves)- now I have been made aware this would come under native american in the testing. I don't have any native which doesn't bother me I just assumed it would show up and thought it would show as 'Caribbean' not native american. Yes modern day Caribbean people are mainly African but I thought there would still be some lineage left and perhaps show in me

+ZigAndStuff Hi! My family is from Jamaica as well and my maternal grandmother also had maroon blood. I took the 23 and Me test and Native American ancestry showed up for me which I believe is from my grandmother. From what I understand from some of the Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me tutorials I've watched on Native Americans, most of these tests are not able to detect which native tribes people may have originated from. So once you know you have native blood, its ends up being more on your end to figure out the tribe~~ But these tests are fun! :)

@SoFrolushesTV8 жыл бұрын
Ancestry have a video that explains that some heritage does not come up only because it goes too far back to detect. So you may indeed have arawak but through time the influence on your dna is not that great. Also when 2 people have a kid not all the dna is transferred. Siblings can end up with different mixes of their parents dna. SO don't worry about it.

Congratulations! I'm Jamaican too (raised in the US) and had very similar results to yours. I read that those of us from the British Caribbean tend to have a higher percentage of our African Ancestry from Benin/Togo (more than Blacks from the US and other parts of the diaspora). This is so fascinating! Also, the Maroons of Jamaica were predominantly West African (unlike Maroons from other countries who were more mixed with Indigenous people). They defeated the British, escaped slavery and created their own society which still maintains much of its African origins. Unlike other parts of the Caribbean, very few Jamaicans today actually have Arawak/Carib ancestry.

You were probably wondering why you did not get Native American ancestry from the Carribean. I wondered the same thing. But I did paint my Chromosomes on GEDmatch, and I see it in trace amounts. However, I have read ancestry does not count anything below 0.5% So if you had a grandparent who was 25%, sometimes you will not even get that DNA as what we inherit from each side is random. I am also going to take the 23andMe test because I am curious, and I do hear some of their results are a bit more accurate.

My PhD research is based on maroons. What I will say is that there isn't as much mixing of maroons with Caribs/arawaks as you think. The African slaves that the Spanish brought over mixed more with the Amerindian population. When the English invaded in 1660 those slaves fought with the Spanish and lost. Some of those slaves fled to what is now known as the Windward maroon area (so some of those maroons may have traces - but I do mean traces of Amerindian genes). But certainly the Leeward maroons certainly would be less likely to have any traces than the rest of the general population of Jamaica. With the white people that had to be stationed in each of the maroon areas as part of he treaties it's more likely that European genes can be found in maroon genes. Hope this helps.

It doesn't specify Caribbean for anyone. You got trace amount of East Asian, which on Ancestry, also covers Native American since the East Asians crossed over to the Americas so late in the human timeline. That East Asian, mixed with African, Iberian, and British, all play a role in your Caribbean heritage.

Jenna Alcala If I'm not mistaken East Asia does not cover "Native America" at all and many nearly purely indigenous people of the Americas do not have any "East Asia" DNA markers. If she has any East Asian DNA markers it is because she has an ancestor from the subcontinent of India which would make sense as East Asians were brought to the island in the mid-late 1800s.

They can tell the difference between Russia/Ukraine etc but not Scottish/English. +M “onlinebabe accnt” douglas freedom of speech is welcome but what you tried to do is state something as 'fact' and that's where i'm telling you you're wrong for it.You come across with an air of entitlement and it's irksome. And if you dont find African women 'attractive' i must question why you decided to watch this?

My pre-watch guess of your heritage: U.K. accent, part of the African Diaspora; either 1st generation Brit? Parents: one parent African/or Afro Caribbean, and the other European? So, 60% African, 38% European, 2% Native American/Asian? Mostly, African: Nigerian, Ghanaian, Cameroon/Congolese & little Benin/Togo; European: British, Nordic(Scandinavian/Finnish), Western Europe

You look South African to me hey, youd most prolly be one of the Nguni tribes (Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebela and Swati).

Wondering how anybody could tell Irish from Scottish (in terms of genes I mean - LOL) - same source peoples and same Viking raiders. Waiting for my results that superficially should be 1/4 Irish, 1/2 Scottish, 1/4 English. Hoping for some surprises. :]

The Irish might come from the group they called the Redlegs.

+taniabb14 You are all up in the comments saying people only know Nigeria and Ghana. I am African myself, Gabonese to be exact, french speaking country just like Benin and Togo and i am very much aware of how they tend to look like. Peace
