You have to remember that when the slave trade was operating there was no Nigeria.You can upload your results to other sites that will break them down in terms of ethnicity....granted, based on DNA data obtained contemporaneously. I came up 60% West African and 38% British Isles according to ancestry.com. Further analysis gave me my West African ethnic heritage....Fang, Fante, Nzima, Mina and Mandenkan....which I REALLY wanted to know. I also discovered I have no Native American ancestry...which did come as a surprise. It is my opinion that black Americans should be offered free DNA analysis as reparations for our suppressed identities....

Also, the great Mali (Timbuktu Empire) in which the Moors ruled also had all these Western Empires intertwined in it. Look up the battles within Timbuktu. Gold Coast and Nigerian influence is obvious in Jamaica. And we all came from South Africa because the Bantus migrated and the Hunter Gatherers/Sans people are "THE PEOPLE" of the beginning. Towards the end of the slave trade, Jamaica began to import slaves mainly from Nigeria in the area where the igbo tribe are from. At the time it was called the Kingdom of Calabar. That is why Calabar High got its name as tribute to where many of our ancesters came. Your results could have went either way because before Nigeria became popular, Jamaican plantation owners favored slaves from Ivory coast/Ghana.
@missalwaysfortunate8 жыл бұрын
As for the 2 percent Middle eastern, many West African people migrated from East Africa. East African people intermixed with Middle Eastern people so when they migrated west that DNA was already present. Also in the 1400 when the slave trade began many West African kingdoms for example Mali had slowly began to convert to Islam because they had a lot of interaction with Middle Eastern ppl via trade.

Irish people can actually have alot of Iberian DNA. Iberia actually relates to the land and people that were there BEFORE the current spanish and french are now but they also count as people coming after. The people from the Basque country have quite similar DNA to us. Even funnier is the fact that Irish people and Iberians and Irish are descendents from the Berber's (North Africa). Although my picture doesn't look as such, I actually have sallow skin compared to many here and my family are MUCH darker and we're all of Irish decent. It's quite an interesting DNA group.

Well there are some misinformation somewhere. I could be incorrect but I've always read and heard that most enslaved Africans in Jamaica came from Ghana. That is why I was expecting Ghana to be my highest, I have seen about 4 Jamaican results including mine and I'm the only one with Nigeria as my highest. Persons 1 - Ghana 53%/Nigeria 21%, Person 2 - Ghana 28%/ Nigeria 06%, Person 3 - Ghana 22%/ Nigeria (not sure if it was in their trace region), then there is me Ghana 7%/Nigeria 20% lol. Regarding your Irish ancestry, the Irish are originally from Iberia that's where they originated so it's more like that 7 percent Iberian is from your Irish ancestor along with the two percent ''Irish'' so you are around 9 percent Irish in reality. The ancestry DNA doesn't always show you the connection between Irish and Iberian which is a shame and causes confusion.
@sheastar058 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that information I shall do more research on that. However I'm hesitant to interpret one thing as something else with these tests, because I feel that the company has enough information to point out the difference. I will certainly check that out though.

The middle eastern come from your Iberian peninsulas Dna since the Muslim conquest took over Spain for some time .. That's why the percentage is so low .. But your grandmothers will be much higher

I disagree with your theory, because the Arabs that invaded North Africa, then the Iberian Peninsula like you said were Muslims, they came out of Mecca, Saudi Arabia (Saudi Arabians, Arabians, Arabs). My DNA is on Lebanon/Syria. The Lebonese & Syrians came to my country in the 1860s/1870s as merchants. When I calculated a 1st generation Lebanese/Syrian Grandparent I came out with about 2%. The circle on the map covers Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, Syria/Lebanon, Iraq & Iran. Thanks for watching :)

Congratulations on your results. I've studied African diaspora roots for the past years so I would expect you'll be largely Ghana/Nigeria with a slice of Congo because it seems that's the average Jamaican result. BTW African southeastern bantu likely means Kongo roots rather than South African because Zulu people didn't take part of the Atlantic slave trade.
@sheastar058 жыл бұрын
Who wouldn't want to claim Zulu? Lol come'on? We have no was to know for certain at this point what the tribes are, just like I've claimed Igbo, idk. Also were you surprised by anything? & since you have studied this when did Mali come into the mix? What's that about?
@geoffrey22928 жыл бұрын
I'm just surprised by your low Ghana percentage because it's below the average but it depend on individuals so it's not much. You seem to be predominantly of Nigerian ancestry because Benin/Togo could suggest you have Yoruba roots (either from Benin or western Nigeria) and some people of Igbo descent also have 10-15 % of Cameroon/Congo match in their DNA results. The 13 % Mali is difficult to interpret because first, Mali don't touch the coast and the country shares some tribes with its neighbor countries. Second, it could also suggest that you have Guinean or Sierra Leone roots because those countries aren't mention either. Third, it could even mean that you have roots from northern Ghana and/or Burkina Faso. So it's very difficult to say lol Here's a good website if you want more informations about how to interpret your dna test: tracingafricanroots.wordpress.com/ancestrydna-regions/Shea Mc
@sheastar058 жыл бұрын
Thanks I was more curious about Mali. Everything I've read has told me that the majority of Africans shipped from Nigeria were Igbo. I have read that the Yoruba tribe benefitted a great deal from the slave trade, they also came as indentured servants at one point. We won't know for sure but random people tell me I look Igbo.

Ktaressa This is why some countries are grouped together like Benin/Togo, Cameroon/Congo, Ivory Coast/Ghana ect
@asanteakan707 жыл бұрын
Shea Mc even between akan there were different states. Who were fighting each other for land and trade routes. So they were not all together. Like akyem, akwamu, denkyria, fante, ashanti, are all akans but had diff kingdoms or states. Some got taken over by others. The denkyria once ruled and got taken over by the newly formed asante(ashanti). After years of war and conquest asante started taking more territories. Some conflicts pushed ppl further east to what is now ivory coast. The europeans started aligning themselves with certain groups. British with fante and dutch with asante. Asante and fante were enemies. Asante became powerful and claimed territory from east ivory coast to parts of togo and burkina faso. The british wanted to take all so they convinced the fante they would help them. This is what made colonialism easy. Other africans fought with the white man against the powerful African kingdoms. Then they came and drew lines with disregard. Now you have ppl in ghana who are more similar to Ivorians than some in their own countries. Especially ppl living near borders. Ppl in western ghana are the same as ppl in togo. I dont know why dud is getting angry you aint far off. What defines a country anyways? Most kingdom and empires end up becoming countries. So if not for british we would of had a country called asante or akanland or something.

Your video is profound. We, like peoples of the world...migrated throughout Earth..apparent. Our DNA travels also, like human biological markers... even though intergenerationally, we all grow-up in distinctly different time periods, strongly identifying with a variety of unique cultural norms (i.e. a Nigerian ancestor's child knowing only Jamaican culture). The ancestors are watching...so learning about them is honorable to who we are. My results showed 38% Nigerian as a Californian. (Proving Hate and Degradation)🌍

Kedu! (Igbo). Thank you for watching. Unlike many places in the U.S, Jamaican culture was designed by the ancestors for us. They incorporated their stories, dress, music, dance, African Spirituality, language (words), & food, into the culture they left for us. These traditions are carried on, so I have no doubt that the ancestors are happy. I keep an open line of communication with them. Also congrats & welcome to like family of Nigetians.

I have at least one Jamaican parent and got 11% Mali and less than 1% Middle East. When looking at videos about Mali there seem to have trade routes and influence from the Middle East. I am thinking that is where the Middle East come from.

Karan M I suspect it's from a single Christian ancestor who migrated from either Syria, Lebanon, or Palestine in the 1860s/1870s, they migrated to Jamaica fleeing religious persecutions. That math came out at exactly 2%.
