Messor barbarus can escape through the top lid of the nesting area, it is too light and they can slip through, i had the same problem with the same nest. Either also but oil on top of the nest or put something like a coin on top of the lid. I used a cotton swab to apply the oil on the nest area.

Edit: You can easily catch them without hurting them with cotton pads. I had them prison break several times in my office until i figured out how they did it.

I included some isopods, millipedes, and spring tails from my garden. They don't do much but burrow in the soil, so good job to you for having the patience to try to film them!
