Hi Friends!
I finally got around to filming my antique parasol collection. This includes mostly Victorian parasols, with a couple of potentially Georgian or Regency ones and one that is probably Edwardian. There a lot of folding parasols and quite a few carriage or tilting parasols here. My collection is not huge and they all need to be recovered, but I am happy with it and can't wait until I get some time to cover these beauties!
I hope that you all enjoy!

Oh! I'd love to see the process of recovering a parasol. Lovely collection, say I as I peruse eBay. :) Funny, I cannot stand umbrellas when it is raining, but I am all about it for a fancy way to provide shade.

@@Costuming_Drama Your parasols are beautiful. No we won't get sick of seeing them recovered because we will study so we can do that too! I need to cover myself when I am outside as I am allergic to the sun and florescent lighting, so anything parasol related is of great interest to me. If I can figure out how to cover one in a sun protective cloth I would do it. Regular umbrellas just aren't pretty...

Yeah! Parasol collection! I'm not an expert, but I'm sort of a parasol fiend, and you have some really pretty ones. The bi colored one with the tassels is delish. There are two main things I know about parasols: One, the older they are, the flatter they look. Georgians types are very close to Chinese types (which, figures, since they were often imported), and the more we progress in time, the rounder they get. Two, recreating a pattern from the ribs is not impossible, but dang finicky… Mock ups galore FTW! Thanks for sharing your collection with us. PS: You really got to change that 1970s fabric from that poor thing! I can hear those tiny screams from here!

Thank you for sharing :). I am also a collector of Victorian parasols. I'm not exactly an expert either and mostly focus on 1830-1865 but here's my opinion on the parasols based on my knowledge and reading. 1) later Victorian. The earliest I have heard of metal ribs in the 1840s. 2) 1840s. Folding parasols came into being in the 1820s but those (and those of the 1830s) have incredibly short folding bits. The size would ring more true to an 1840s parasol and the finial is nearly identical to one of my 1840s parasols. 3) Past my time period but I think 1870s/1880s. I have several similar parasols. 4) Again, past my area of knowledge but 1870s/1880s. 5) Crazy handle, black silk, and lace all say 1880s to me. 6) Getting some weird 1870s vibes but I can't say what is making me think that. 7) Looks 1850s to me and probably English based on that handle. I have 6 of them in my collection. Fringe and non-metal ribs mean that it is pre-1860. Love the tassels! 8) 1840s. I have nearly an identical in brown. I love that green! 9) most likely early 1850s (marquis parasols are VERY common at that point). Missing a very long (3-4") finial. That color is gorgeous! 10) later 1840s. I completely agree that it has been recovered. If I were recovering it, I'd go with a brown or green silk (moire would be best if you can find it) and possibly some fringe like #8. 11) I'd say later 1850s. Possibly missing a lace cover. 12-all the black ones :) ) Those are American made parasols dating from 1860 to 1866-ish. Balls on handle mean earlier, carving and/or shepherd's hook means later. My understanding is they were incredibly cheap during the era (some selling for like $1) and that is why there are so. dang. many. of them left. I can't comment on the doll one as I know nothing about those. The white one COULD be an 1860s walking parasol but I've never actually seen one in person so I could be mistaken. I could also see 1890s. The loopy black one I could see as early as 1880 with that size and color but it could be later. Again, thank you for sharing! I absolutely love seeing other people's parasols! Hope this helps some. Again, my period is really 1830-1865 so anything after that is really a guess.

Living in Arizona, I think I should look for a parasol. I made a cover for an umbrella in a pineapple pattern that is crocheted. It's for 24 inch spokes. I bet I could make it smaller for a parasol. Also the parasol you showed with what said was a bone handle, I'm thinking that might be ivory. They are all beautiful. I hope you do a tutorial on recovering one of them.

Love your collection....show and tell is my fave. I would like to see how to recover parasols and umbrellas. My great aunt told me the difference between them is, umbrellas are larger and parasols are lined on the inside to protect you from the sun. Dating can be from the tips. And how the ruffle bit at the top is fashioned both inside and out. One of yours, I'm sure had bone ones.the painted white one , looked a bit suspect to me. It was the wrapper that was hanging down,( looked elastic?)and the tips, looked a big bit 1960ish to me....seen it b4. If you took a paint scrape for analysis that would tell you something too. I'm no expert but I know what I have seen b4. Not to put you off or anything! Every bit helps. Lol...

I would have to search for hours for the reference, but I think that I recall a conversation - recorded in a friend's diary - between Oscar Wilde and one of his friends about whether a lady in mourning could, with propriety, line her parasol in a blush coloured linen to relieve the stress of unrelenting black on a sallow complexion. It may have been Whistler - between their bouts of cattiness to one another.

23:44 I have one that looks almost exactly the same but seems to have a cheaper fabric on top with little wear and tear. I suspect it was one like yours that someone has previously tried to restore, but the fabric is so tight I can’t fully open the parasol. I might if I push super hard but I don’t want to risk breaking anything

They're all beautiful Noelle! Do you know if the ones you believe to be bone could be ivory and how to tell the difference?

@@Costuming_Drama ah ok cool. I was just curious since during the 18, 19 and early 20th centuries the ivory trade was pretty prevalent.

I have one from my grandmas collection. Looks to be extremely old! If I take a pic could you maybe tell me more about it?
