Apparently, he's an extreme intermittent fasting snake! I'm with you one hundred percent. I posted earlier, in the first video, that appetite is a function of hormonal activity. At least in humans, hormones in fat cells suppress appetite. If his metabolism is really that efficient, he should go off feed again if you go back to feeding adult rats, especially if he's still eating through what should be fasting periods. Enjoy your free snake; 😂

My bio teacher has a ball python that didn't eat for 18 months once, the ball python is still alive and has achieved a ripe old age of 28 years old. If I remember correctly my bio teacher told me that the reason why ball pythons and some red tail boas stop eating is because they have a sort of built in fail safe for during droughts when there is less food availability for prey causing there to be less prey. It's kinda like a battery saving mode on a phone where they will expend a ton less energy by nearly going into a hibernation state, but not quite. They are still semi-active. This state is called diapause. Sometimes snakes in captivity will go into this state for no reason but as for the reasons, nobody really knows.

The reptile community will always argue over husbandry because hobby keepers learn to develop their own care based on resources they’ve found and how their animals react to that care. Most people who are experienced clash with idiots who do an hour of research on the animal and then think they're experts. Take the sand debate with bearded dragons for example. Sand can and will impact a beardie, and even vets will tell you this. But people say "b-buh I kept one for years one sand and the pet store told me to!" and then their beardie dies from impaction.
@danielskody32805 жыл бұрын
@@menph1096 "long time keepers" can be just as bad, I've heard people with "30+ years" of experience give bad or wrong information. When doing research always get info from 10-20 different sources and then take that with a grain of salt. No one in this community is perfect (even though some people think they are)
@sethalinesl27875 жыл бұрын
@@menph1096 While I will agree on this, I've found I prefer sand over a reptile mat because it helps influence the behavior of digging(if they want to.) I personally just take my beardie out of the enclosure when feeding crickets since he isn't the best aimer and after one mouthful of sand, I've never fed crickets in the sand. I also raised his food bowl out of the sand on rocks so he couldn't get sand into it when moving around. I understand the debate and that impaction is one of the biggest killers for beardies, but if done right, I don't think sand should be traded for a mat 100% of the time. It really depends on how you do it, in my opinion.

Yeah from what I’ve read about that group they believe in only small, dark, plain enclosures for ball pythons. They think anything extra is stress on the snake. So they would hate a bioactive or anything that isn’t a tub.
@Zagareus5 жыл бұрын
@@sagealeese3919 Why would it need to be dark? Wouldn't that be worse in some scenarios since they need heat from light to thermo regulate? Isn't that what the log or any kind of hide is for? Just seems like a really weird and specific thing to me.

This video made me feel way better about my situation. I have a young ball python who is about a year old. She went off feed for 5 months and finally just ate again 4 days ago. She has a history of "hunger strikes" as it is and is on the thinner side, but her eating again was encouraging. I'm hoping not to go through this again any time in the near future.

We learned NOT to follow whatever the comment sections says, because u as sunny's owner knows him best. Honestly all animals are different and what works on some don't necessarily work on others. Sunny never looked like he was underweight( lossing weight yes but not rapadily). I'm sure that if he did u would have done something, but sunny obviously just wanted to chill for a bit, nothing wrong with that! XD

Personally, I see this as if you let your snakes live more naturally rather than in a crammed dark tub, they can handle different things without deteriorating in health. Like I’m sure wild snakes are a lot more hardy and can go months without eating if they are really healthy. Also, can I jsut say that in so excited to see Sunny age. There are very few ball pythons that have been cared for as well or as long as sunny so as he ages, I’m sure he will be super healthy and happy and break a lot of ball pythons stereotypes!

Posted a picture of my otherwise healthy adult ball python soaking after a bad shed asking for advice on keeping humidity consistent, and instead of any advice I got a bunch of comments telling me I was a horrible snake owner. I was new to snakes, I didn't know the issue was he was in (warm and dechlorinated) water which is apparently stressful for terrestrial snakes. It's not like I had done no research at all, I just didn't understand care sheets meant "put him in a wet pillowcase" when they said "soak." Not one of these comments told me that, they just attacked. Facebook groups are where good intentions go to die.

Yeah, I agree, I'm in a gardening group that is super uptight about what you post, basically if it's "look at my petunias!" or "help, why is my tree yellow?" it's okay but you can't mention animals or bugs, reptiles, pests, like you can if you're very, very focused on the plants and don't go on and on too much about the bug itself, but if you just wanted to share a bug you saw in your garden, which is totally garden related content, they'll get pissy at you and say "if you want to talk about bugs there are bug groups you can join". So once they kept suggesting this "native bugs and reptiles of the southwest" page for asking about native animals. I joined, it was a public page so I didn't need to be reviewed or anything, and I read a few posts and whatnot. A week after I joined I found a creepy bug I needed to identify and went to post a picture on that page and I couldn't access it, it said I was blocked. I had never liked or commented on any posts yet or anything, I only joined the page and hadn't taken a single action. It's as if someone was going through new members and looking at their profile and going "ew, I don't like that person's face, blocked". it made no sense. I messaged an admin asking why and no one ever replied. I expect very little from any facebook group these days though, it's all very petty and clique-y.

imagine how many of those commenters literally had no experience with snakes/bps. It's almost like several reptiles species will occasionally refuse food for months, and outliers can happen?? If the snake is still in a decently healthy weight, even slightly underweight and is still able to move around and has no issues stargazing or showing signs of neurological issues I don't see a problem? also the facebook group that hated you appears to have been mysteriously taken out. Seems like people on here probably reported them and got the group taken down because I can't find a single group lol.

Thank you for all of your videos about Sunny. It really helped me not go crazy stressing about my female ball python going off feed, like I was the first couple months. And I'm proud to say that, after giving her the time she seemed to want and watching her behaviors, she was out cruising just after her light went out for the night, she has now successfully eaten two frozen thawed rats in the past two weeks!!! She had gone eight months without eating! And then went right for these two like nothing was ever wrong. Like Sunny, she didn't lose a lot of weight and was healthy and strong right up until she finally ate again. Anywho, I just know you've gotten a lot of grief over all of this, and for me it was super helpful and means a lot!

This Sunny Saga was what got me through my snakes 7 month strike. I got him 5 months ago, so such a long strike was very scary. But this video and the others informed me of signs to look for, such as weight loss. My ball python hardly lost any weight, stayed hydrated, shed perfectly, and did the usual lazy snake things. Finally, when he was active and exploring for a few days straight, I recognized it from this video, and knew to get a rat. He struck and ate within 10 minutes. Thank you Alex.

I think the metabolism thing has to do with the age of the snek as well? Sunny is a few years older than the albino, right? Younger snakes are still growing so they expend more energy?
@jordana61155 жыл бұрын
Hes wrong...different species do take longer. As for balls it takes 2 to 3 days for the food to digest. And the rest is a rest period for their bodies. Young balls should eat once a week, 10 to 15 % of their body weight then a small rat or medium if theyre rather large. Every two weeks for life. While eating and digesting their bodies are in a stressful state, so allowing them to relax after helps their hormones rebalance. This kid doesnt know much and admits to not having done research and just guesses...yet when introduced with actual facts he ignores. Of the 30+ snakes I have , even the rescues with deformities eat regularly. Going off feed for a year definitley means hes doing it wrong...
