I keep a small container of frozen chicken liver in the freezer next to the rats. I first try to feed just them. If he rejects them, I defrost the container running under hot water just for a minute, long enough to get a tsp or so of the blood. Then I put the container back in the freezer and use that bit for enticing the meal. Always works.. I don't understand why, however. It's not like he would eat chicken or chicken liver, but, this works, none the less. If it ain't broke, I guess...... Don't fix it.... so they say.

I have had the same issue with my 6 year old ball python. She went off feed for a year. She didn't lose hardly any weight. Her conditions in her enclosure have been the same for the whole 6 years I've had her. And one day she decided to eat again and still continues to eat. I have no idea why she went off feed. This is the first post I've seen relating to my issue.

My main concern is a tumor. If he's not losing weight, but also not eating then something inside him could possibly be growing. An x-ray or cat scan would be my next course of action after an entire year of being off feed. Sunny is so darling and I would hate for anything to be wrong with him. Really happy you were able to get him to feed on something, even if it's small! You looked very confident, well done.

Neither does simply not eating... Also, yes it does, many, many, many people (and other animals) with large tumors weigh more with the tumor than after it is removed (and prior to having it). I used to raise rats, and most of them would inevitably end up with large tumors in old age, some of them doubled in weight due to large tumors (prior to me putting them down).@@propit3700

Snakes are mental. I got 2 African House Snakes (one albino and one wildtype), husbandery is similiar to cornsnakes. They were my first snakes, I got them roughly one month after hatching - both had obviously fed recently - both we´re very well-mannered, while the wildtype had more spirit. The albino eats like a trashcan, but the little brown devil would go off feeding for roughly a month, eat once and then repeat his little routine that drove me crazy, because his orange "brother" got the same treatement and ate just fine... Then I received my Christmas gift from this little jerk - he escaped. Seriously this tiny very well camouflaged devil´s spawn, who atm didn´t eat for 48 days went MIA and I tried every trick known to men to find him - nada. 45 days later - I was certain he would lay in some corner, dead - that little sucker just chilled in plain sight on my freaking carpet. He survived over 3 months without food, roughly a month without water and only lost 2.28 gramm (last time he ate he weighed 12.05g, so he didn´t weigh much to begin with). That dude´s mental and continues to drive me crazy because he´s back to his freaking routine of not eating.

Hey GoHerping. I have personally observed the same thing with one my 6 Year Old Male Ball Pythons. He went 13 months, and only started eating again after a few assist feeds and would only eat live after that for a month. It's weird. Well, I don't really get why everyone in the comments is so concerned about it. One of the first things I learned before getting ball pythons was the "1000 gramms rule". It says that a lot of BP, mainly females but sometimes also males that reach around 1000 gramms of body weight go off food for at least six months or longer. That has probably to do with hormone changes as they are in "puberty" at that time. Also another thing I learned is that in the wild BP very often go off food for months without a reason, not only in winter. So I still would not worry that much as long as everything else is fine. 🤷🏼‍♀️ A vet visit would not hurt though, so that you know for sure he is healthy but he looks great so it's probably nothing.

My male ball python didn’t eat for 8 months. I got him to eat again with f/t chicks that I thawed in water and heated with a blow dryer. The first one I had to leave in his enclosure for about 30 minutes and he finally ate it. The second time I gave him a chick he actually struck out and grabbed it. I think I’m gonna give him at least one more before I try rats again.

LETS GET THAT UPDATE I had an ex that was trying to feed rats that were way too big for his ball, the snake ended up going 13 months without food and my ex acted like he was doing everything he could. My snake similarly has issues that can not seem to be fixed no matter what, but still lives on perfectly fine and seemingly unphased by it 😂. stoned serpent my ball python didn’t eat for over 3 months, and I was starting to get worried, so I tried a rat pup because I thawed an extra one out for my corn snake and she took it. @stonedserpent9206
@stonedserpent9206 5 жыл бұрын
@@daniellelovejoy8877 from what I understand, the small meal helps get their digestive tract up and running again- the stomach isn't producing enough digestive juices to handle a full sized meal after having shut off for so long, and they seem to be aware of this, causing them to reject a meal if it's too big. So it is a good idea to try to get a snake onto food again.

lol my first ball python went off eating for a year XD then she just started eating again. Ball pythons do this often. Maybe not this long often but its not unheard of. This is why I do NOT believe they should be classified as beginner snakes. This alone can stress a beginner out and make the snake keeping experience a questionable one for them.

My 15 year old BP just finally ate again after 8 months of refusing. In all his 15 years, he's never refused until last year. Took him to the vet several times, always told he's healthy, just being picky. I offered in every different way i could imagine. Changed the husbandry, moved him to another room in the house. Then one day, i offered his normal feed rat, and he took it like he didn't just spike my anxiety for the last 8 months. Completely unbothered. I looked back to this video throughout the ordeal just to reassure myself that he's probably just being a brat.

I was checking out and the check out clerk looked up and turned white, called security and promptly left her register. I started to laugh saying "you're afraid of this little thing?" I would strongly recommend you to check Sunny's uric acid blood levels or doing an kidney biopsy or so if posible. Gout might be frequently caused by dehydration but just because he's hydrated doesn't mean that there's no gout. Or maybe he's just a super picky ball python lol.. Now I had some experiences with chelonians and lizards in clinical practice but no real experience with snakes yet so I might be wrong or missed sth. Good luck & keep us updated. :)

Kristy Holt-Brightbill they are not mysterious at all. Unfortunately people do not provide proper husbandry because they put them under heat lamps into bare tanks. Ball python should be kept in a dark humid small enclosure that mimics the burrows they live in the wild. The whole “winter mating go off feed” is a myth. It’s just improper husbandry.

Aww, I wish this wasn't happening to Sunny, he seems so sweet and good. I'm no expert on snake medical care- when my Dhalia got a cold, I saw her stargazing, freaked out, and immediately took her to the vet- and my dad's had this same problem with one of his snakes, and we wound up giving it to my science teacher at the time. Never did figure out what was wrong, but I can share my experience with that? There hadn't been any changes with that snakes' husbandry (it never had a name) it just stopped eating out of nowhere. I don't know the specifics of the heating/humidity, but I do know that we tried feeding it all sorts of sizes of mice and rats (one thing that we did try, was live pinkies since we kept two of the rats it didn't eat and wound up with babies) and there were a few things we didn't try, that I wish we had. Changing up the decor in the enclosure, just to make sure there wasn't something in there with some sort of smell or look that was freaking him out. Sometimes animals are just weird like that and taking him to the vet. I know you don't think it'll help, but there are lots of ways snakes can get sick or things can go wrong that have nothing to do with something in your control. Dhalia got sick because the heating went out, and the vet was able to prescribe her shots to help her get better. He also could have eaten a mouse/ rat with something wrong with it, or been exposed to some airborne illness even within a relatively controlled environment. Or he could have some kind of invisible complication- just like with people, I'm pretty sure animals can have things just sort of. go wrong. The other thing you might want to try is moving him away from other animals. If he's sensing them, they could also be stressing him out. Hope this helps, and best of luck to you and Sunny
