This emaciated ball python was sent to us a few weeks ago and has not eaten in 5 months. Although the previous owner did everything they could, it only ever ate one meal and is withering quickly. Here's our plan on how to help this guy out, and get him to perfect condition.

Man... One of my ball pythons stopped eating for almost 5 months at a young age... I finally had to force feed him (with the help of my vet after exhausting all other options) he never got quite that skinny but he was underweight and has been stunted his whole life since... He's 2 years old and a great eater now but man... This video made me anxious. He's still almost half the size of my other snake that's about 9 months younger than him.

While it's definitely a really bad case, it doesn't seem like it can be entirely pinned on the previous owner. It's not necessarily their fault that the BP was refusing to eat. Should it have been gotten help earlier, probably. But it's not necessarily entirely the owners fault.

This is giving me war flashbacks. I have a ball python now that I rescued from a home that underfed him consistently and claimed he "wouldn't eat" and was "aggressive" so they couldn't keep him anymore. He was extremely underweight and I truly thought the owners did everthing they could at first. They sounded so convincing and really acted like they cared about him. I quickly realized they were just very good LIARS. He was so weak. He wasn't as underweight as the ball python in this video but VERY CLOSE. I waited about 3 days for him to settle into his new tub (I had to redo so much. The tub he came with was only 1/2 ft by 1 ft.) and as soon as I offered him food he took it immediately. He is also the sweetest ball python ever. He has never bitten. He hisses a lot but only because I think he was never handled in the entirety of his life. He has luckily gained a lot of weight and is doing great with me now! As soon as he recovers completely I'm going to be moving him from the tub he's in now to a nice sized terrarium. Good luck with your ball python's road to recovery! I know how much effort it takes when dealing with a sick animal but after you start seeing some progress all the work you put into it just makes you feel so good and I'm so excited to see your little guy recover!

My story is nothing near as bad as yours previous owners wise, but when I found out that the people who owned my snake before I did would buy live, medium sized rats for a 4 foot long ball python, and leave them in the 20 gallon tank for months until he would eat it, made me nearly have a heart attack. Apparently he "only ate live rats, and refuses white ones". But guess what? He ate a frozen/thaw white rat just fine for me yesterday. The live ones were cheaper though :/ so they just went cheap.

Also the king snake made me cry, he's so goofy looking (and im looking forward to hearing about Sunny!!) I really hope that poor albino is okay, though. Ditto what some people have said about lack of nutrition causing neurological deficiencies; hopefully he can recover on his own. Ngl the way the rear sags reminds me a lot of my juvenile corn snake who passed away due to lack of food as well, and that was the last symptom she (well, he, but i called it a she) showed before she passed away. I hope he doesn't succumb to the same fate, he's a beautiful-looking snake.

I think your statement about the emaciated ball python’s mental health matching that of a “healthy” spider ball, says a LOT on what mental health is being bred into those snakes. That sort of discovery should be enough to stop that breeding from happening. But they still keep breeding spiders.

Rahim Aldemir agree, we see this in the horse industry all the time! Miniature horses being the most effected! Dwarfism isn’t cute! The parents who are producing dwarfs should be culled from the breeding stock for the sake of the breed! The quarter horse industry is trying to eliminate some of the preventable genetic diseases within the population! HYPP and HERDA are 2 out of 5 genetic diseases that must be tested for before a baby can be registered. Within a few generations the amount of affected horses should drop dramatically. The same needs to be done with the spider morph! It’s flawed and should be removed from the gene pool! It’s the same with the spider morph! It’s severely flawed and needs to go!
@harranboy
@harranboy 5 жыл бұрын
Jayknee Garner that’s messed up. I feel bad for those poor animals that have to live like that. It almost reminds me of how they bred wiener dogs to have such long backs that they get back problems at a young age. Breeding for deformities is horrible and should be illegal.

I think the albino and the piebald are great examples to compare for anyone wondering when to assist feed or not. The albino obviously *wanted* to eat but physically couldn't so it makes sense to assist feed, you're literally assisting him in doing what he is trying to do but can't. The piebald still has good muscle tone and responsiveness so, combined with his lack of interest in food, it makes sense to take things more slowly with him. P.S. Thanks so much for sharing all of these videos with us. You provide a lot of great information and do wonderful work with the reptiles in your care.

I’ve also rescued a poor ball python. He’s my BEL, I’ve named him Nelson, he was between the underweight one you have and the skinny one you have. We tried to get him to eat for about two weeks and we decided to assist feed him a pinkie. After a few weeks and a few pinkies, he upgraded to assist feeding fuzzies and we’re slowing working our way up with him. When we got him, he was only being fed a pinkie every other week to every few weeks of that. This video has definitely reassured me that we’re on the right path with getting him back to health :) so thank you I truly appreciate it!!

Thanks for the video Alex. My ball python hasn't eaten in 7 weeks. She alert and tongue flicking and active every night. Shes lost weight but now I'm not as worried. I'll continue to offer food every week. If she doesn't eat soon I'll take her to the vet. Thanks

This was actually super helpful. I am a first time ball python owner, and am navigating what is too much to feed or not enough in terms of mouse size. Educational to see a range of what is too skinny and what is fat. I got super lucky with having an easy feeder, but will definitely bump up my mouse size. Awesome video! And Alex, get some sleep my dude. Look a little exhausted in this one! Hope you're doing well!

animehorsefreak no problem. Keep in mind that is for juvenile snakes. Once they reach 1000 grams I would not feed that much. 10-15% if for growing snakes.

our ball python was emaciated like that when we got him home.. i thought we were bringing him home to die..that was over a year ago. Now he is perfection. Healthy eyes, sheds, poops, and not lethargic. It is heartbreaking how people let their critters starve like this.

Oh man, this is almost exactly my snake's story. I got a baby albino ball back in March who looked the same. She was soooo emaciated and I was so scared she wasn't going to make it. I also decided to assist (not force) feed her and she took every pinky I gave her. It was sad because I knew she wanted to eat so bad but she just didn't have the strength to strike. She's now up to eating hoppers all on her own and has doubled her body weight since I got her. It was such a happy day when she struck by herself the first time. I know you'll get the snake back up to health. He's lucky to have you to work with him.

My banana ball python was underweight when we got her. She was about 4 months old supposedly but you could see her spine and she was starting to really look skinny. I was told the person who had her before the person who gave her to me had her since shortly after her first shed and had no clue how to care for them so he wasn’t feeding her often enough. I’ve had her for about a year now and she’s grown so much! She’s back up to weight and a happy, active little snake. Never gave me any problems in feeding and there’s only ever been one accident, which I totally blame on myself and haven’t made again. I love my little Yumi ❤️❤️ Great videos man! People think snake care is so simple and it’s surprisingly not. More people should be aware of this before getting in to the species

So excited to see Stryker!! He did feed one time for us in February, but that was it. Also, he definitely used to strike a lot. I think his issue really comes down to just being hugely stressed. We feel like we gave him a good habitat, couple of nice hides, things to climb on, and he was super active, but he came from a mill breeder, and I think he just needs TLC to become his full awesome self. You guys are the best!!
