I wouldn't say I am "in the car business" per se, but I've been buying and selling muscle cars off and on since I turned 18. Most of the time I buy them for myself because I like them and find them for a reasonable price, but end up selling them for a small profit when I find something I like more or find something that is a better investment opportunity. That being said, the one thing I learned buying and selling classic muscle cars is this...EVERYBODY is a liar in the car business. I'm not saying Doug is, because he claims to be a nice guy and I have no evidence to refute that. I also am the same way and have actually made deals with no cash down and nothing more than a handshake, because if I say I am going to buy or sell something, I mean it. That being said, I don't think I've EVER bought a car from someone or sold a car to someone who hasn't lied to me in some way, shape or form. I've even had guys who own reputable shops who are well known in the classic car community lie to me, or "forget" to tell me that a car is loaded with bondo when I asked how solid it was, etc. That's honestly why I haven't gotten into the business more seriously, I have too much of a conscience to make it. The best advice I could give to someone looking to buy a classic car of any kind is to either go look at it yourself, or pay someone you trust to go look at it BEFORE you buy it. Buying a car sight unseen will get you fucked EVERY SINGLE TIME, and you have absolutely no recourse unless maybe you get a seller to describe the car in detail, in writing. Even then I'm not sure that gives you any legal protection if the car shows up and is not as described by the seller. The point is, if you are buying a car, the person who is trying to sell it to you is lying about it one way or another, EVERY time. If you don't put your eyes on the car (NOT pictures of the car) BEFORE you buy it, it's going to show up with problems you weren't expecting. Sometimes they can be simple fixes, and other times huge chunks of bondo are falling off of your quarter panels after a few months.

I drove a 512 once and I gotta say it was very special. 400k special? Not sure.. hard to say. But it was a great experience. Very smooth revving motor that pulls hard to redline and how can you not love that gated shifter.. I'm sure this was very stressful to deal with though. That being said, I also drove a 355 gated manual car with an exhaust, and that was far more enjoyable for the street especially with the sound it made. I'd rather save the money and get one of those.

So... I bought a gray market car from a legit dealer who knew nothing about the car. Asked two questions that anyone off the street could have answered, and got lied to. Then let my $85.k sit motionless for three long years. Next I listened to someone tell more and more lies. But I honored a verbal agreement to that person, knowing he was going to steel a huge profit form me, and even when he himself didn't honor the agreement. Shrewd indeed!

The 512 BB is actually not a boxer and the "BB" stands for Berlinetta Bialbero (dual camshaft) not Berlinetta Boxer. The acronym (Berlinetta Boxer) was fabricated by journalists. Also it is not a Boxer engine at all, it is a flat engine or horizontal V. A boxer engine employs one crank-pin per cylinder, while the flat (horizontal V) engine uses one crank-pin per two horizontally opposed cylinders just like any other V engine. In a true boxer engine, every piston has its own crank-pin and this gives Boxer engines their distinct sound and inherent balance. Subaru engines, old VW air-cooled engines, Citroën flat-fours, most Porsche flat engines (the flat-12 in the 917 was not a boxer), Panhards twins, the Corvair’s flat-six, Lancia’s flat-fours, all of these were true boxer engines. Flat engines that are not boxers are more rare, though they do exist. Generally, they have the packaging advantages of a flat engine, but don’t have the inherent balance of a boxer engine.
