Hi Toby,I kind of think it's in my best interest to build a bunch of palettes in the future to accommodate various things in life that need to be painted, even though people can mix colors it's always nice just to grab the color you want..he that has more colors has more color mixing capabilities as well..

Personally I agree with u but also disagree because I for one use only one palette and mix and match colors not as they are but as I imagine them to be so I beleive that it all depends on the artist and their own style

@@someuser2851 some colors you want but to hard to mix to your taste,if brought than mixed could bring new colors to life? But paint cost,if that limits your palette so it does to your creativity..I think? Sounds good in my mind..ha..

It's nice to have different palettes for sure - but make sure you take time to get to know your colours and your mixes. I use different palettes for sketching vs 'painting' because of different granulating/staining properties that benefit the different techniques for example. I'm actually less fussed about the colour - I don't have the patience to carefully match colour so I just use colours I like that are vaguely similar to the scene

Also have a thought on greens that I just implemented with a new folding palette for sketching plein air. You know, what is most distracting to the artist and viewer (IMO) are inappropriate greens (notice I didn't say "natural greens"). We have so much green in our world, and it varies from green-gold to blue green. So the only green in my new palette (in a separate half pan glued into a mixing area) is phthalo green (BS). The new palette has six mixing areas, and I've reserved one area for mixing greens only. So I can get a solid green or pick up a partially mixed load. Along with the PG I have cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, and phthalo blue (GS, also in a separate half pan glued in) - and hansa yellow med, lemon yellow and quinacridone gold. Those along with organic vermillion and quinacridone gold, I can make lots of different greens and browns. I also have transparent red oxide (in place of burnt sienna), quinacridone burnt orange and monte amiata (to replace raw sienna) as earth tones which can be used as well to make greens and browns. The color and tone of buildings and streets is kind of irrelevant because those objects can be any color - but greens and to some extent, sky color, it seems to me are aesthetically important. heres the creative mark folding palette Im using (I bought five of them LOL) www.amazon.com/Creative-Mark-Folding-Plastic-Palette/dp/B0049V1C1W Your site has inspired me a lot.

I have three slots left in the palette, and I'm thinking of adding Naples Yellow (WN version only) only because of its poor mixing strength with blues - good for areas low in the horizon if I paint such a subject.

cobalt blue and quin gold yields a nice light brown; and CB or phthalo Blue (gs) with QG and HYM yield moderately bright to muted greens; I like the convenience colors, but Im trying to really reduce the number of colors I carry

Thankyou…very interesting. I have got so many colours that different artists have recommended but interestingly I don’t like Hansa yellow as feel it’s a ‘dirty’ yellow and doesn’t have a fresh look although it’s in my palette
@TobySketchLoose

I get what you mean about hansa, for me it's got a good punch which is why I like it - but for 'proper' Watercolour perhaps a couple of yellows is a good way to go!

Oh! I was so excited about possible getting the colors in your palette until I realized that most were Daniel Smith colors. This brand is so darn expensive here in Japan (sigh).

Do these colours come in the box? Or do you buy the pans when the box is empty? in other words when you have used the original colours out of the box, hope that makes sense :/

I buy the boxes the empty pans and tubes of paint separately - squeeze the tubes into the pans. The cheapest way!

@@TobySketchLoose Thanks for the reply, I use cotman watercolour tubes but they dry out completely rock hard, they don't look like your paints

@@eyediggit2 the cotman ones do seem to dry very differently. In general Winsor Newton are less good for squeezing out - they use a different recipe for their tubes and their pans
