One name that stands out for me in that Spectrum short stories collection is James H Schmitz: one of my favourite SF writers, best known for his novel The Witches of Karres, and his series of novellas and short stories about The Federation of the Hub.

Oh nice, thank you for the tip. I'll keep an eye out for more Schmitz, not sure if I have read anything from him before, so many great novels out there.

Gadzooks. I recognize the few authors but none of the titles except the Pollinators of Eden. If I saw them all before me I would read the Blish and the Brunner first. Nice haul.

Great video and great haul, with some very interesting books! Hunt Collins, author of Tomorrow & Tomorrow also writes crime novels, most notably the 87th Precinct novels under the name Ed McBain.

Thank you kindly. Yes indeed, I just finished reading "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" and realized that this is indeed Ed McBain, aka, Evan Hunter, aka Salvatore Albert Lombino. I've shot a video review of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and I will post it in the near future. I have a few 87th precinct novels now which I acquired after this unboxing video, maybe I should do a "The Sci-Fi Shed guy reads crime and mystery novels" feature video one day🙂

The Iron Dream is a book “written” by the small mustache man from WWII. Yes, the whole thing. It’s high concept stuff. Spinrad is a very good writer. Not sure it needed to be a full novel though.

@@thesci-fished I forget where I heard it (prob another ytber); but a lady went to a signing at a convention for a famous author. When she reached the author she mention her father was an author whom wrote many books; but today no one has heard of him, Edmund Cooper and was in tears. I think the author was Gaiman but . . .

@@chocolatemonk hopefully, we can change that, his blurbs sound interesting enough. I've read a couple way back around 30 years ago, but I can't remember what they were or if I enjoyed them. I've heard of the Spinrad novel, The Iron Dream. I've been meaning to get hold of a copy. I haven't seen that cover before. There's another cover with Hitler sat astride a motorbike with a phalic space ship and the swastika looming behind. I've got a couple of Edmund Coopers, but still haven't read him. Really like that edward bryant, Cinnabar cover art! Really like those covers from the 50's/60's too. Very much of their time, but all the better for it. Cheers for a great video Peter.

I'm one of those guys who picks SF books because of their fantastic cover art. Half the time the story is disappointing. One type of novel that never fails to please is the SF Film novel. Either The film is based on the book or its been novelised afterwards. I think I probably have them all as I started with the original Star Wars novel in '78 at age 12. Allen Dean Foster's Alien is one of the greats.
@thesci-fished

I'm definitely guilty of the same, you can't really lose, if the novel is bad at least you get some pleasure from the cover art, and occasionally, you are rewarded with a real gem.

A few comments: I read The Iron Dream after taking a writers' workshop led by Spinrad, just to see what kind of writing chops he'd brought to the table during the workshop. His novel pretends to be a high swashbuckling fantasy a la Conan, but as if written by Adolf Hitler, who in Spinrad's alternate history somehow became a fantasy writer after WWI instead of trying to destroy Europe. I got through it, but will never, ever, re-read it. Spinrad's novels always try hard to be edgy in the Harlan Ellison vein, but Ellison does it better. Robert Sheckley & Gordon Eklund were both Galaxy magazine writers, which suggests that they wrote science fiction that was street-wise and sometimes maybe a little sarcastic. Sheckley also sometimes added a touch of surrealism to the mix. I liked the fiction I read of theirs, but that's not much, sorry to say. I tried reading a Perry Rhodan novel once, but didn't get very many pages into it. Magazine editor, literary agent, and legendary superfan Forrest J Ackerman was mostly responsible for getting them translated into English and got Ace Books to put about a hundred of the novels in print. It might have been a successful series in Germany, but even the considerable clout of 4SJ was unable to get readers in the US to warm up to them. Somewhere around the flat I've got some of the newsletters that he sent out when he was serving in the US Army during WWII, giving him yet another nickname for a while, Sgt Ack-Ack. I'd rather re-read those than any of the Perry Rhodan stuff he tried to flog later on in his life. You like 'em though and that's fine by me. If I still had any of the Ace paperbacks on hand, I'd gladly send them your way, but they've been out of my life & bookshelves for 30 years or more by now.

Thank you for the great comment, I really enjoyed reading it. I did some research on The Iron Dream post the box opening and I'm as perplexed as I was when I did the box opening. I will definitely need to read it one day and form my own opinion and share it with your all. It should make for an interesting video if nothing else. Thanks for the comments on Sheckley and Eklund, I'll put them towards to the top of the TBR. I have read the first of this lot in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" but Hunt Collins, that was an interesting read, I will post a video in the next few weeks. True about Perry Rhodan, they are definitely hit and miss for most, I am guilty of occasionally polluting my mind with some bad Pulp Fiction, so sometimes Perry hits the spot ;-) Thank you for the kind offer, shame we hadn't met 30 years earlier :) Thanks again.
