Two things: 1) As of September 2024, I'm not great in the right seat... YET. 2) You can join my Insiders Newsletter where once a week I share an important aviation lesson I've learned, links to my latest content, and behind the scenes info, here: airplaneacademy.com/insiders

As always, you spit pure fire, sir. I've had my PPL for two years, I only get to fly about 1-2 times per month now. But I have it in my head that any time the wind is more than seven knots it's too gusty for me. This limits my confidence in going up sometimes. So I'm saying it here: I'm not confident in flying in moderate wind conditions.. YET.

This channel has been consistently great for highlighting the humbling moments of flying/training. I have no doubt that it has saved a few students and pilots from quitting during the low points of motivation. These highs and lows continue even after training, and these videos are a great reminder for experienced pilots as well. Thank You, Charlie

Dude ... A big THANK YOU from CYQT for this video ... and all your other videos. GREAT content ... Inspirational and motivational. My last flight was 2 years ago with the Chief flight instructor. We did a simulated check ride. After landing he said I'm signing your PTR (Pilot Training Record) time to schedule a check ride with Transport Canada. I had a total of 54 hours logged. Well as you said in your video ... "Life can get in the way" and it did. I have yet to complete that final check ride. This spring (2025) I'm going back. I know it will take a NUMBER of flights to get my butt comfortable in the seat again but at 63 I'm not getting any younger. lol Time to GET THIS DONE. Again, thank you for sharing your passion for aviation and the time and energy you put into your videos. It HELPS more people than you know. Two thumbs up!

Yet, with some practice you will find it is easier to fly right seat! :). Then moving on to doing the walk and talk, ergo fly and teach it……. Also becoming a CFI and then really teaching people will be a mindset change. What, Wait, I’m the instructor now ?? I’m not good at this, yet! Over time and focus on being a good instructor you will become one. Thanks for all your advocacy for GA. Trust yourself!!

I'm three hours (plus the one hour discovery ride) into my PPL Journey, and I've watched so much KZbin of people flying that I feel like I'm way behind... All the things good pilots make look easy, are not easy. But flying is fun and I have to keep reminding myself I'm three hours into training that takes 50-60 hours on average and most of the people I watch on KZbin have hunderes (or thousands) of hours.

Talking to ATC is my weakness, my local airport is a combination of GA / Military and commercial, so this afternoons lesson I was doing my warm up watching two A320's taxi out in front of me and a B737 park in front. Whilst it is very cool as a student pilot to be playing around in this airspace with them, it is also very intimidating. I'll get there. Talking to ATC is basically the final thing I need sorted before my solo. I worry about not saying all the words or all the words in the right order, so it's as much a mental thing for me to overcome. It was also nice this afternoon when ATC gave me my taxi clearance back from the runway to GA parking, I have shorthand reply, they repeated my clearance, and I realised they were after the full readback, so yes it was no biggie and as my instructor said afterwards, really ATC is nothing more than a conversation.

So I started studying everything I could when it came to Aviation I can't think of the correct name but I took my maiden flight with an instructor and fell in love, I signed up with the King online school I am 63 years Young, I work two jobs as an operating engineer in Las Vegas in the hotels, and life got busy, and the course got tougher with the mapping, so I have to have knee surgery starting on the 11th and will be off of both jobs for 6 weeks, so there is a flight school at the North Las Vegas airport that has classes on Saturday which is in between my two jobs I will be signing up there and studying a lot while I'm off work, but your words of inspiration and the key word yet , are so inspirational to me and I cannot thank you enough I've never had a hobby and I absolutely love this flying, but the most important thing to me is safety for myself any of my family and friends and anyone around me thanks again Jim Graham

I am one of the 50-80% that quit. I started my flight training 50 years ago. Yeah, I'm old. Back then, my hang-up was radio communications. Think back to the mid-'70s (of course YOU are too young for that). I'm a teenager in a Cessna 150. NO HEADSETS back then - they just were not all that common for private pilots! All we had was the scratchy/tinny speaker in the wingroot by the pilot's left ear. The mic was a corded mic down by the elevator trim wheel. Not only did I have to hear the speaker over the engine noise, and recognize that they were talking to ME, but then I had to use a hand (one on yoke, so I had to use my throttle hand) to reach for- and use the mic. I missed a LOT of radio calls, especially since I was taking my training out of a major airport - a United Airlines hub at the time... Then Life got in the way... Now that I'm a 'Silverhead', retired and have the time, finishing up my PPL is on my 'bucket list'. I'm retaking my entire ground school over, using an on-line course since things have changed significantly over the years... I passed my Third Class Medical. Got my new Student License. I even bought a noise-cancelling headset (what a Godsend!). My instructor is somewhat impressed that I still have decent 'stick/rudder' skills - maybe those 25 hours in my logbook from 50 years ago will still 'count' for something, LOL! I have a good feeling about finishing my PPL within the next year. ...and then, maybe, Instrument :D

It will come. I was like that. As you continue practicing stalls, you will get more comfortable with them. I used to think I was going to do something to crash the airplane during stall practices or the airplane would fall out of the sky. Once I learned to trust the airplane and realized what the stalls were simulating, I was fine. You’ll get there. 😊

Transition to right seat is shocking in how uncomfortable you feel even doing simple things like turning. But in a few flights, it will be completely natural. Apparently you’re allowed to take your Commercial checkride in the right seat if you request it so some schools now have their student pilots go through CPL in right seat. That way maneuvers are easier when going through CFI training. Just a thought.

You're not alone. For my commercial license last year I would take practice tests and then take notes of anything I missed and go back and study that, then repeat the process. Eventually I had a document of only the things I was missing and that became my study guide. I took probably 15 practice tests and started in the low 80's and ended up getting a 95 on my written test. The 5 I missed were just really oddly worded and I don't remember thinking "I have no clue" but more like "this feels like a trick question" lol.

Most of the people that start flying end up quitting one way or the other. Some never get their license, some get it and barely use it, some get it and let it fall into state of disuse. it’s fair to say the majority quit at some point. For some reason getting the license seems to be some goal that turns out not to really have a purpose for a lot of people. A private pilots license is really not that practical for a working person with a family. Find a friend with a plane or one who has license and can rent a plane and do a lot of flying with them. It may cost you some money but you need to do it for a while. If you really want to keep doing it after it’s not so thrilling then maybe get your license. It seems all these people act like getting a pilots license is some proof that you’re an exceptional human being. Almost anybody can physically fly an airplane and acquire the requisite skills. Frankly is not that hard. I’ve noticed a lot of men who are not very athletic find some comfort in believing that flying an airplane shows that they have the “right stuff”. For almost everybody flying it will be a financial battle. The 3-D simulators will be getting good and that will probably save a lot of people a lot of money in 20 years. And don’t bother telling me I’m a negative human being to make yourself feel better. just deal with the reality. It’s good to be excited about life, but a lot of people get a little too giddy about flying. I love my airplane, but everything just worked out for me in my later years. Odds are not in most peoples favor. Food for thought.
