My BJJ Collar Chokes Sucked Until I Learned These 3 Adjustments

Today's video is all about Cross Collar chokes in the gi and the small details that make them work in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
This technique video is partly an attempted to help my newer White Belt and Blue Belt BJJ practitioners. But also an attempt to share some useful details on making collar chokes (like the X choke) work from Guard.
You see for a long time with my Jiu-jitsu training I just didn't have much success with collar chokes. I just figured they "weren't my thing" or however you want to word it. But after picking up some small adjustments on the wrist, holding times and gripping the collar. Now I'm much more successful with collar chokes during rolling.
Hopefully the video will be useful to you and your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.

For any choke: 1. Increase the pressure steadily. 2. As you increase the pressure, count to about 7. If the choke is there, the person will tap already. The person should tap before you reach 50% of full power. 3. If you did all the above and they don't tap, you need to adjust your grips/position and try again.

Good for you Joe! At 16 there are plenty of crappy things to get into, this is not one of them.. Its a fact this is a positive influence in your life ,physically ,mentally and emotionally.. The life skills and discipline you learn now will carry you through your entire life.. I wish I would have started when I was young but I know for sure that my kid is already going strong and hes only 9 .

Cross collar choke (Gyaku Juji Jime) was the first sub I ever got in Judo, and your advices are as good as always ! Exactly like you said : they may not tap quickly, but don't let go, wait a little and eventually they will run out of air.

Thanks for the details! At some point, as a more-advanced white belt I sort of stopped doing cross-collar chokes since I thought they were too basic (and I hadn’t had much success with them). Then at one class another white belt caught me with one of those, and I remembered that they could be effective after all, so I decided to start trying them once again. I competed for the first time recently and won one of my matches with a cross-collar choke! Like you said, Chewy, sometimes you have to hold on to it a bit longer. I wasn’t sure if it would work at first, but I just kept my grips and after a little while my opponent tapped.

Chewy!!! You're the F'ing man. I have been watching these videos and I put this cross collar choke, got broken, tried the cross loop, he blocked, went back to cross collar from top mount he tried to sweep and I was able to get knee in his butt and quickly pass to side control! Wish your gym was closer! Love my guys but would love some personal instruction. Sorry just feeling pumped!

Awesome video, I was struggling with it I felt like and this makes it a lot easier. I know I can ask my instructor this, but it also makes for a good video imo. But, in which positions can one make these aggresive movements? Which position do I have to be in to start going for subs.

Would you recommend going for subs straight out the gate? Or doing the movements, passes, and sweeps first? A lot of the time when Im rolling I want to go for a sub to get that sweet victory, but I find myself losing a lot.

Hey I have a question! My dad practiced martial arts for over 25 years, karate akido judo ect, and one day his experience came in handy and he disarmed a hunting knife welding person and held him down until police came. Over recent years he's become over weight and I want to make him learn JJ with me. He feels that he should get into shape prior to getting himself back into what used to be his passion in life (it's how my parents met). How do I convince him into reigniting this passion of his and joining me in this journey of JJ. he is turning 51 soon and has some knee issues which turns him off to the idea of going hard in a new sport. are there measures he can take before to make him more prepared or can he start to learn in a manner that is less physically demanding. Thanks so much! Cool fact he is deaf and was a national point karate champion!

Do you think you could maybe ask your coaches after class for some extra help on takedowns? And then once you figure what your problem is to drill it everyday before or after with a partner? I’m not sure what the dynamic at your gym is like so I don’t know if this is an option for you but if it is that will probably help you a lot.

Our professor also tells us to close the elbows. It closes the space between the wrists where the neck is. Everything you said and close the elbows. It feels more natural to open the elbows but that’s wrong. You’re giving the neck an opening. Close those bows :) Oh, Frank. I like, “I don’t have a thing” Frank.
