I have. She even manages how I respond to emails. She contradicts her instructions on day to day basis in such a way that she made it appear I have not done what she asked me to do knowing that it was the instruction she made a day ago. She supersedes a lot of her instructions. It's so stressful. One time I had enough, I answered her email point by point to her allegations. My last paragraph was telling her that I value my job and I don't want to get fired because I have a family to take care of. Until now she hasn't responded, and that alone is stressful not knowing what will happen by next week.

I work with a huge company my manager micromanaging has gotten to the point that she demands to know what I am doing on a constant level. I have worked for a lot of companies in my life, huge and small alike, and I have never been questioned about my work ethics. It has gotten to the point where I have been on short term disability because she caused me so much stress I passed out.

I'm working for yet another micromanaging boss. I think these people are insecure, and fearful that a talented employee might steal the spotlight. My current boss's favorite tactic seems to be withholding information that is needed to do a particular job, but then pick it apart after completion. His identification of someone's mistake gives him the feeling of superiority. I have over 30 years' experience in the too-and-die trade, as well as a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I can only guess that I pose some kind of threat to their role as manager. Companies claim that they are desperately in need of skilled people, but today's managers don't know how to employ them. No wonder there are so many people who have simply had enough, and leave the workforce as part of the Great Resignation.

You're 100% correct. Bosses micromanage you because they see you as a threat or they're envious. Always! There's nothing you can do about it. Now your boss is focusing a lot of attention and effort to try and discredit you, so they can feel less jealous and to try to show to other people that that you're not that great. He wants you gone because your presence drains him. An envious person see you as an enemy and they are drained by your presence. They will do everything in their power to take you out.

This looks so familiar. I also feel like information Is kept on purpose. I was not sure at first I thought I did something wrong. But then realized I would always get asked to do new task, documents on my days alone. I would complete them, however get criticized about every single things I did wrong like. Not name the documents right name… feels like walking on eggshells.

The best thing to do is update your resume and leave for the next great opportunity. Micromanagers believe they are right on everything and tend to be insecure about themselves. They most likely see you as a threat...like they know you could do their job. So they gaslight you and try to make you feel you aren't that great an employee.

Best way to deal with a boss who is a micromanager? Just wait until no more noise is coming out of their pie hole, then look at them and say "Yeah, OK." in a pleasant voice. When they walk away thinking that they've imposed their will, control, and dominion over you, just go back to doing what you were doing, since you probably know what you're doing better than they do.

Best solution is to quit, they'll never change. I'm dealing with one right now and it's insufferable. She's constantly watching you and telling you what to as you're about to do it anyway, repeats herself on simple tasks, asks for updates when you barely started, wastes time correcting things her way when the work is already done, texts me before work even starts and lays out a detailed schedule down to the time. The best part is she comes in hours before her shift off the clock on her days off to tell us what to do and work, which means texting all that shit doesn't even mean anything if she's going to be here anyway. Apparently she doesn't have a life outside of work? It's AWFUL! The best part is I've worked there longer than she has and she knows less than me, yet shes still breathing down my neck. They want to know everything and control everything, it's stressful and not worth it.

Yep. My first boss out of college turned out to be a micro manager and she utterly killed morale. The whole team would go outside during lunch breaks just to vent about her. I put up with her overbearing crap for a year before I finally had had enough and left. Haven't dealt with anything like that since, thankfully. Nothing like working for someone who admonishes you for taking initiative and getting things done as opposed to consulting with her first. If you can afford to, get out. Same. My first micromanager destroyed my moral. It was until the lockdown that I had the time to regain my inner peace. After that, I came back to the workforce with a second micromanager (lucky me). This time I stood my ground refusing ro reloose my peace and critical thinking against her. She insists she be included on all my meetings and emails but will still call me or message about what I’m working on. She also wants the team to document every task we do of everyday in our personal calendars and create cases of those tasks in another system. And on top of that, she schedules one on one meetings every day or every other day to again ask about what I’m working on!!! 🤬🤬 I’m so ready ready to tell her to leave me the the f*** alone so I can just do my work!!!! I shouldn’t have to spend more time telling you about it then actually doing it. UPDATE: thank the lord I have since left that supervisor/ department and got a pay increase to boot!! But as I was giving my notice (1 month) of transfer. Sup comes and ask when I’m leaving where I’m going am I gonna miss her??….😐and when told I had a month she say “oh good, you’re still mine for another month”. If the only reason your boss can tell you why they want you to do something a certain way is that that's how they did it when in your position it's a pretty good clue that they're micromanaging you. My boss used to constantly try and get me to change how I was doing things and the only justification he could give was that was how he used to do it. Didn't matter that my job was getting done, that I explained that I'm doing it the way that works for me, that I've tried his way and I found it slower/more difficult/etc to do it that way, etc, etc, etc.

There's an elephant in the room (at least within much of modern corporate culture), concerning many micromanagers: Many of these individuals (either consciously or unconsciously) are engaging in this behavior because when they're not picking apart the details of what those under them are doing, it becomes shockingly apparent that they don't actually bring value to the table on their own... These are the parasitic individuals we see all over the place within corporations today - often with fancy sounding job titles (always telling someone under them to be sure THEY get CC'd on YOUR email to so and so'.... even though they won't be part of the actual solution at any point in the process). And when you ask your boss what they were actually hired for, even he doesn't know?!? In short, many so-called micromanagers are actually engaging in a strategy to protect themselves - keeping the attention focused on others, so fewer people notice they are not bringing real value to the organization on their own..😉

Here is the BEST way to deal with a 'Micro-Manager'. Either quit on the spot or give your one days' notice. Zero explanation. A 'Micro-Manager' can NEVER be reached, period. To think otherwise is to be even more delusional than the 'Micro-Manager' themselves. Do yourself a favor and leave immediately. If more employees where to exercise and implement these personal boundaries and tactics, failing companies would have the choice to either hire proper supervisors or go bankrupt. Cheers.

We had a contact managed by a private company with a team of people to manage it, send it for repair, dispose of it. Now all 1,143ish pieces will fall on just two of us. I sister with my boss who goes off during inventory, a station manager who won’t give out team time to finish the job and wants this official list with all discrepancies-this year I’ll be 60. I’ve worked there also 12 years. I do a good job, but I am being micromanaged and treated like an imbecile. It’s like you said that (but I didn’t) that’s not what I wanted, it’s all about the gotcha moments to take you down. Not playing that game. Retirement early to save my mental health? My "micromanager" seems to have OCPD and Narcissism. It's like they are stuck in a single-player video game where everyone is an object and a rival, and they got very good at superficial lingo, but don't seem to really understand the object of the game. You get stuck repeating the same entry-level tasks while being treated like you have never done them before. All I know is Grey Rocking everything about them. They are so stuck on themselves that I try be incredibly boring and non-reactive to them, and I keep pivoting my attention to what is healthiest for me at all times. If I want to do something I don't ask permission, I just do it. If they try to silo me away from people, I play aloofly social with whomever I want and act like I don't notice their territoriality. I stay professionally pleasant, and privately growing.

Last year I took an Accounting/Administrative job with a particular company. My boss always says she is not a micro manager. However, she is the epitome of one and not receptive to new ideas in the automated office. She loves paper. There are so much more things she should focus on for the company. But because she's inept , she rather make huge issues over the trivial things (like being a dictator on filing unnecessary repetitive documents). My mental health and morale is being compromised and I am now finding myself falling right into her scapegoat traps. I just wish she would eat all those papers along with the copier machine.

This isn’t necessarily an acute observation on my part, micromanagers are ineffective and insecure as you pointed out. They are oftentimes lazy and want you to pick up the slack on behalf of the ineffective employees who should have already been fired. Every expectation is imposed on me, as if I’m the savior. Yet, no one else has to adhere to policy. And when I address the issue and call a spade a spade, I’m automatically marked, chided, and dismissed as a disgruntled employee. What a Circus.

I kept trying to explain this, and he video chatted me about it. He stopped pushing the matter once he made sure I tried everything he wanted me to in order to fix it even though I said it wasn’t a problem on my end. I wasted a ridiculous amount of time when I had large and urgent assignments…on a line gap in the fine print text at the bottom of an email. I gotta get out of here.

I'm a chef and i lead a mostly unexperienced kitchen and front of house team. A lot of the people working for me are young, and for most its their first job. I work under a huge amount of pressure which i usually quite like, but recently people have been making jokes and comments about me being a micro manager. I think there is an extremely fine line between a good manager who is on top of things, and doesnt let things go wrong.. and a 'micro manager'. I would love nothing more than to let people get on with things (the things ive gone over with them numerous times) and not have to worry. But the second i take my eye off the ball, mistakes happen, and i am the only one responsible for any of them. I struggle because one person in particular (the one that called me a micro manager) is under managed! There is lots i would like to ask them to do but i worry they will take it the wrong way or feel overworked (they aren't). My options are to control the the situation, or to let things burn around me.

People have to learn to outsmart these micromanagers who aren't necessarily bosses. In my experience, and current situation when dealing with a micromanager, giving in to their constant demands of lists, reports, etc only makes the matters worse because they just keep adding more and more and more. Even if you try to step up and get ahead of their micromanagement, now thats your bar. You have proven you raised the bar for them and they will only make you raise it even higher in order to fuel their anxiety or self-stressing behaviors. For example: i have a bosses bosses boss that will take my work, print it, write on it, scan it and send it back to me rather than just respond to the email with the changes or updates in the body of the email. Now she is wanting me to also print everything and save it for "my records". .....how about no.....

9 times out of 10 it’s a trust issue. My supervisor is constantly micro managing my work when I am the best at what I do. Ironically he’s been at the job for about 1 year. So he has no clue how everything works. I’ve got people that have been at the company for 5+ years and I’ve been told numerous times that I actually do the job right unlike many before me. The supervisor doesn’t seem to see it that way. I’m not one to complain about work or pretend that my job evaluation is above reproach. But when the micro managing starts to become constant ? That’s when I start to get annoyed. I’ve already tried talking and asked him politely, is there some sort of problem with the way I’m working ? Of course I got a very vague and generalized response. But through the word salad, I’ve noticed something. The supervisor has no issue with anyone else in my department. Just me. Moving me around, changing my job functions all in a supposed attempt to “try something new”. While he leaves everyone else alone. I could go on and on but I’m at a point today where I am ready to resign. I’ve had enough!

Example the super comes over and says “ make sure you take out ALL the linen “ another time walks over and says “ make sure you are plugging the machine in and the pumps before you leave “, make sure you put the table in home position every night “. So I finally say “ I am 100 percent sure I plug the machines in and put the table in home position when I leave and she needs to stop lying “ I knew exactly who he was talking about that runs in the office every day and tattles everything and has gotten others written up. I see the micromanaging as coming from two places (at least where I work): 1. A person that's not competent in the disciplines they are managing, was made the manager of a number of mid-to-senior grade employees. But doesn't really know anything about the topics they are supervising. So, in order to subordinate their employees and emphasize "who the boss is" they will fall back to pedantic and trivial ways to show they are in charge. 2. A zero defect mentality and a motivation focused on not "looking bad" (as an organization, directorate, office, etc.) means there will be a focus on process instead of outcomes or results. Put it all together and we have a convoluted staff process that is so paralyzed with double and triple checking every detail, even details that don't matter, that it's hard to even schedule a meeting. (Because the slides that we are told we must have for a meeting are checked by the boss and the bosses boss with revisions that will then need to be checked again... 10 or 15 hours wasted on this just to hold a 40 minute meeting) And it's everyone in the office that receives this "guidance." What could be a really good job has become a terrible one because of this... Oh well... I get paid a LOT, so at least there's that...

I left my last job two months ago, my boss was the owner and the poster child of micromanagement! She was so bad, she'd get mad at you for writing a post it note wrong!! We could only have 4 toilet paper rolls in the bathroom at a time, we weren't allowed to order supplies until we were just about to run out (Which lead to us not having supplies for a couple of days to weeks), One time she didn't let us order a pencil holder for the new girl, but decided to buy 30 Magic Erasers, that no one used for the two years I was there.... She didn't believe us when we told her we were out of thank you cards that get sent to customers, she actually had the nerve to call an employee that left a few months prior, to make sure that the thank you cards were almost depleted. Even though we had a list of customers we gave the cards out to, she didn't believe us. She was out of control! I'm so glad I don't work there anymore! When I started my new job, I had 4 people tell me they wanted to work for my new job. lol Right before I left, I found out, in order to keep people, she'll buy cars or give employees loans, so that they'll stay. If the employee tries to leave, she'll say, I bought you a car and this is how you repay me?!" She pays everyone minimum wage no matter how long they've been there, but she can pay for cars for at-least 5 different people?! Which is also weird because she always had us use our own cars when we met up with clients, but she couldn't get a company car for us to drive, instead of putting miles on our cars?!

I know your example of a boss’s boss’s boss talking to you about how you responded to an email was a joke, but that literally happened to me. We had an hour-long meeting about it. The offense? I typed “and” twice in a row by mistake. It was an email to my manager.

There is a cleaning company that is contracted out by another. My boss micromanage and says employees that this company tests me to see if I am cleaning by dropping food on the floor like popcorn. Then I was told that I said I never vacuum the office cubicles. I never said that and a rarely ever see anyone in that section but one person. Then I found out my boss tore up paper and dropped it in an area behind a table that nothing should be there. I'm very upset. What do I do??

I have a manager who tries to micro manage us. I kick back which causes issues. She also has an issue with O.C.D. I would love to find a new job but jobs are scarce in my field of work so we just try and make it work.

Micromanagers just don't get it - people don't work best this way at all. It can be a form of bullying when the micromanaging starts consistently interrupting and speaking for employees too - like they're not even human.

My boss refused to sit in her own office and demanded to sit with us so she could have her eye on us, in her own words 😖, and dont let me start on the fact we weren't allowed to send an email without approval.

Like she said, PLEASE, use that overcommunicate thing with serious consideration! All it did for me was make people super lazy.

Why "Deal" with them? Just move on. THEY aren't going to change, no matter what you do.

We don't have bosses we have employees. If you see your employer as your boss that is where the problem starts.

When some bosses treat you as if you have no common sense and you need to be monitored as if you are a toddler it makes you give up ,it makes you feel like well why should I even try because nothing I 😮 do is right or good enough. In the end THEY end up losing do the best you can in whatever way you choose to set up your own boundaries and imitations more importantly be the best employee you’re supposed to be doing what you’re supposed to do on every level and hopefully things can get better if it doesn’t you have a choice to make do you stay at the job or do you leave? Only you can decide
