I agree, my uncle worked two full-time jobs in warehousing operations a looong time ago. He worked a first shift job and a night shift job.....he was so damn tired but he sacrificed to do it and earned it all the way sleeping in his car even due to exhaustion and lack of time. I knew a manager at the retail chain I used to work at, she was doing the same thing so her three kids could attend college and graduate debt free. For time based positions Ken is right, it would be ethically wrong to do both jobs IF they require you onsite at set hours. For performance and task based roles it's not the case, you get paid and raises based on your output and quality of work. As long as you meet expectations, attend your meetings, etc. no one gives a damn in the business, with the exception of not being able to work multiple government or defense contractor roles due to security and confidential information restrictions.

I just wanna make two points, number one your employer doesn’t like when you have another job they view it as the your other job is taking your time away from them and they should be enough and secondly, I worked IT. I never had enough time for a second job, I was working rotating shifts days and nights and weekends, but that’s a whole other story. The real reality is your primary employer wants you to think of them as your spouse and working a second job is cheating on them. They don’t want to think that maybe they’re just not paying enough. Just don’t tell them anything.

Yeah NO to this advice! I work in healthcare as well. We are allowed to have side jobs, but they must be disclosed in writing. Purpose likely being an employee can't call off, be late etc because they're working their side job. Trust me, I've encountered Many coworkers who have side hustles- then either don't show up for their main job, or are Consistently late. Gotta love when they talk about working their side gig til 2 am, call off, can't be on time, and when they're at work- Don't work. Side gigs are a double edged sword between the responsible people working to better their situation, and those that just don't like the responsibility of working.

Is is legal in most states to prevent and/or fire an employee for "moonlighting" or working a second job. While it's not illegal itself just like being rude to customers isn't illegal, it's certainly a fireable offense if the company wants it to be. Keep your mouth shut and never work on the clock for another job because that can in fact open you up to lawsuits for fraud. Keep them separate, work in an unrelated area, don't let one affect the other (like make you too tired to work well), and shut your mouth.

@@TopShot501st yeah and you should do a little more reading because that's a completely different thing. That refers to formerly legal contract that barred employees from leaving a company to go work for the competition. A company like OpenAI would use it to prevent an engineer from leaving the company and going to work for Apple later on. Once you leave a company you can work for whoever you want including the competition. However, while you're employed they have every legal right to fire you for that.
