Watching this again I realized something. He was probably banking (pun unintended) on your desperation in order to get out of paying you, hoping that you would be naive enough to take any treatment since you would just be 'grateful for having a job.' Also, they were already low-balling. On the plus side you now have another project to include in your portfolio.

I watched the livestream, but here anyway. I worked for a small startup like company back in 2016 and was screwed out of a lot of pay that was agreed to in my contract. Needless to say I left pretty quickly after realizing it was all lies and excuses.

If you're working with a UK startup / company you can look up their financials here (filing history) to see if they're legit enough or not find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk If the numbers look ridiculous.......could be a sign to steer clear

Agreed. Always worth doing some due dilligence before hand on the safe side. If your feeling extra skeptical, you can check their credit rating. Some of these companies couldn't get a pencil on credit and quite often thats an alarm bell.

Is there no such way to add a clause that if you don't get paid you won't complete work ant further until you get paid? You know to protect you as a contractor. There should be no way for a developer to be asked to continue doing work if you haven't gotten paid.
