Reminds me of the parable that Jesus told in Luke 12:16-21. A rich man had so much, but rather than share any of it with others, he tore down his barn that was too small to hold it all (wasteful) and built a bigger barn. Jesus said, "Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee. Then whose shall those things be that thou hast provided?"

Something that hangs me up about moving things OUT of my house is, "Could I sell this on Marketplace/Craigslist/Nextdoor?" or "Who can I give this to?" instead of just getting it OUT and taking it directly to donations...

This happens to me all the time!! I have this sense of ‘I need to find the perfect home for this item’ which is crazy bc the thing doesn’t care one way or another and I got tired of my home being used as storage for other people! Bc even the people who said ‘omg yes, thank you! I need that’ never come to get it !! They don’t want it either, it served it’s purpose, you can let it go! Dawn says in another video, she imagines someone finding an item that was hard to part with at a goodwill or thrift store and thinking ‘Omg can’t believe I found what I needed at a price I can afford!’ And that brings me peace ❤️

I believe we are the result of a clash between the lingering “scarcity” mentality of our parents and grandparents from the depression yet we are currently living in a very “affluent” society. As you have pointed out frequently, it can be helpful to recognize how easily we can replace most things. My mother used to say,” if you got it once, you can get it again.” As I am in my mid sixties, I can honestly say, “your kids won’t want it.” And your needs and life will change over time so usually all this “saving” is in vain. After all, “someday” is not a day of the week!

I literally thought this today. I looked at my childs old report cards. Nothing exceptional but and I thought she may want to look at them one day....then i realized....if my parents had mine i could care less and I'd tell them as they are also currently decluttering to throw that crap away. It means a whole lot of nothing so...in the trash they'll go.

I struggle with this with almost every item I pick up but I have to keep reminding myself that if I don't have time right now to make that "thing" or use the item in the alternate way then I most likely won't have time in the near future to use it. We make time for those things that we really want to do and if I'm not making the time to use that thing right now then I probably never will. There might be time 20 years from now but right now my kids are young and I just don't have that kind of time. And it's so not worth hanging onto all the things for a "maybe" project 20 years from now.

What makes me feel prepared for future contingencies is having money in the bank, not a stockpile of items in my home. Since becoming minimalist and being more mindful about my purchases, I have been able to save so much money. This is what makes me feel secure and prepared for whatever may come my way.

Have to say and I have been de-cluttering and purging for several years now. It wasn't easy and we hold off literally truck loads of stuff. Not last year but the year before I had the year of the Great Purge where I went through every closet drawer shelf room out building attic Barn tool box cupboard car glove box everything and pitched and purged like crazy like my life depended on it. I did this in different waves. The first go-round I flew I went through everything and the things that I knew I didn't want without thinking I just grabbed and put it in a box the Box went out on the back porch the next wave I went through was a little bit harder then it got harder and harder as I felt I was going to end up with nothing left. I boxed up things and put the date to six months or a year later and at that time came and went and I didn't open that box I instantly would just take the box out of the house. It felt so good I felt so liberated and so free. Then I started watching your videos along with other people's videos and I started looking at my house and started thinking about what would fall and hit me in the head if there was an earthquake. And that's when I decided we are going to become minimalist. My mind definition of what minimalism is. As I go through the house if I am not happy and filled with gratitude when I am cleaning something then out it goes. It is taken nine months this year and I finally love my house. We got rid of so much that I ended up with an extra room and turn that into a beautiful pantry. The next room that ended up empty is it wonderful spare bedroom which was much needed. Now when I clean my house or as the fly lady says bless my house I can have the entire house clean in an hour and that would include the windows. I am able to spend more time canning I'm doing the things that I really love and fixing more nutritious food. I am even sleeping better. I know the things that I donated will be sold and the money will be used to feed the Homeless and to buy coats hats and gloves for the homeless this winter. And that makes me feel a lot better then being grumpy all the time because I have so much stuff to clean and take care of. so to those of you that are on the fence about what you really need to get rid of or it's too hard or too confusing keep going don't give up set that timer for 2 to 15 minutes and just go for it with bag in hand. This last weekend I finally went and bought new clothes after 15 years of not having new clothes. when I brought in 14 new shirts I got rid of 15 old shirts and that actually felt really good. So keep going don't give up take a break if you need to be kind to yourself because there is a world of freedom and peace on the other side

The glass case dilemma is not silly!! It's the crux of the problem we have with parting with clutter. It's usually a delayed decision to the point of defeat. I love sharing my stuff with others (friends or relatives) if I'm downsizing it out but I'm more apt to go with the "can this be replaced for under 20". I'm old now and extremely sentimental but I'm enjoying the fruits of my labor. That vacuuming goes a lot quicker without all the clutter. Love your videos!!

I spent my life tidying up and putting stuff away. When someone came to visit it would all get put in cupboards and drawers so the house looked "nice". It never stayed that way for long lol. I have a holiday cottage I rent out and it has everything you could want or need for your stay. I know not to put anything unnecessary in there as it's just more to clean and tidy. I love it when it's all done and ready for our next visitors. Until I found you it just never occurred to me my home could be the same!!!! I have begun to declutter, it's really scary, and exhilarating at the same time. I am so grateful I found you. I watched Marie and thought the results of her method were wonderful, but for me it is peace that really resonates and spurred me on though I'm sure when I have less stuff joy will follow. I just wanted to say a big thanks!

I’m probably a 8 or 9 on the 10 scale of angst when it comes to decluttering. The hardest items are often those that aren’t good enough to donate but “too good to throw away.” I’m right there with you on the tattered jeans- I probably have six pairs...maybe more, that are hanging around in the hopes I will use them for patches or a craft project such as a denim quilt. This hope is bolstered by the fact that I have used them for those purposes in the past...but now the long distant past. A few things that help me let go of some of these items is A) Asking myself if I would be willing to do this task today, or if not today, then when? Putting a time limit on keeping it. B) Recycling it in some other way- denim can be laid down under mulch as a weed block for instance. 3) Throwing it out with gratitude for its service and my abundance and trying to make my future purchases mindfully to reduce waste.

I had two bags full of denim quilt blocks I had gone through all the trouble of cutting up, but never got around to creating a quilt. I had those bags in my trip zone for more than 5 years until I had a friend talk to me about a denim quilt his mom had made him, and he complained that it was so very heavy, and hot, not breathable. I'm not living in a cold zone, and menopause is knocking on my door. I don't want to sleep in a hot bed, and I hate having heavy things on my legs in bed. I labelled the bags as 4" pre-cut denim quilt blocks, and donated the lot. It felt good to have the walking space back, and I'm glad now not to have gone through the massive effort of sewing a heavy quilt and then not wanting to use it. I would definitely feel way too much angst to donate that!!

I always struggle with the "but I could use this for..." scenario. I read once that creative people have the hardest time getting rid of stuff because they can think of so many ways to use it other than its intended purpose. Sometimes I have to remind myself that while I am creative, the actual chance that I'll use that thing for any of the uses I can think of is actually very small. Another question to ask myself is, "Would I go out and buy this item right now to have on hand for 'just in case'?" If not, it needs to go! Thanks for all of your videos!!! They really help and I always look forward to hearing from you, Tom, and Diana. I hope to see you in Indy!!!!!

Oh my gosh, what you said resonated w/me big time. I grew up kind of frugally....but nothing like when I got married. We were super poor for a little while. It caused the mindset you talked about. We will be celebrating 50 yrs. of marriage in March & have lived in our house 25 years. We are in the process of decluttering. The questions you gave to ask are brilliant & I'm sure they are going to help ! We have kept way too much stuff over the years. As a result of that, we don't feel peace. There's TOO MUCH STUFF. It feels fantastic to declutter. The more that goes out, the better we feel. When we see a dent from getting rid of more stuff, we know we're making progress & that feels fantastic.

Hi Dawn! The most difficult item/items for me right now are parting with baby clothes and toys of our three kids (ages 2, 4, 6). Since we are still in the season of having children and are open to more, it is hard to part with the memories and the “what if’s” related to the possibility of having more kids and wanting/needing these items. I have started the process though, and what has helped a bit is watching your encouraging videos and reminding myself that if we were to have another child it would be ok to just purchase again. In the meantime, we are overrun with stuff which is detracting from the peaceful atmosphere that is so important for our family! Thank you for this ministry of guiding and supporting this community to focus on the purest of priorities, namely our mental health and quality time with family. This all works together to live out our faith and live our best life 😊✝️💞

We recently had our house appraised and our cleaners helped by "decluttering" for us and placing alot in the garage. The house as they left it is so much closer to your home and so easy to keep tidy - especially the kids rooms and their playroom. After making beds and 5 minutes in the playroom they are done. There is more decluttering to do in the kitchen drawers and a few cabinets but otherwise my house is starting to feel "peaceful". It's been several years I've been at this and it took "outsiders" coming in and pointing out what was ultimately "too much" for the final push. I'm so grateful. I know I have trouble with being too sentimental and being in love with kids stuff. It's not enough to declutter - we have to stop the buying too lol. Thanks Dawn for being a constant inspiration! ❤️

I so resonate with this! Our upbringing can greatly affect us. I realize we had so little growing up that I have struggled to let go of things, whether it was because I felt wasteful, or like I could surely use it later or I should find someone to give it to. The problem is I then end up with bags and boxes of good intentions and yet weighted down by so much stuff... sigh

One idea is every time you sort through stuff you have your bag to give to the op shop (short for opportunity shop - same as Goodwill I think) or a box to give to your friend and then you go and give it to them. Don't worry about getting a whole lot of stuff at once. Just get what you've sorted out on one day out of the house, one bag/box at a time.

Another good idea for the ripped up jeans or any other piece of fabric that can't be repaired is do donate it to an organization that makes quilts for people suffering from severe illnesses. Lots of churches and hospital volunteers are making prayer quilts to give to a person battling an illness to comfort them. This way the fabric is used up and you don't have to worry about what to do with it ! This helps you and someone in need ! Love your videos !

My daughter and a friend were here for dinner Saturday. The friend mentioned that her new apartment is the first one she's had by herself, no roommate, and so she's having to buy a lot of things...so I went through the kitchen. I pulled soooo much stuff out and let her pick what she wanted. She carried off two big boxes, and now pretty much only needs silverware and appliances. It felt really good to help her out, and even better to get rid of stuff I wasn't using. Now.....the stuff she didn't take has been piled up all over my kitchen (since SATURDAY!), and I've had trouble dealing with it. I can't quite bring myself to stuff it all back into the cabinet...but I've also had trouble deciding to actually get rid of it. This motivation is what I'm here for. I'm gonna take the plunge. Growing up modestly is the reason we want to keep it all. I believe that. Also, modest living means waste not, want not. I am pretty good at repurposing items. Saving money by not having to replace things is what gets me to move the item out....to the other room! :(

@@nancyrampmeyer8492 that is why my dad is a hoarder! “Why let it go to waste in some dumpster when I can keep it for just in case I need another 5 of these. In some respects it is good to keep extras like when my vacuums (that he found) was great for awhile suddenly conked out there was another one to get from basement (but keeping 8 is ridiculous) Or I was having some slight prob with my microwave in which if I cooked rice or pasta would heat up wth steam that when I went to cook something else it was shut off and I had to wait 20 mins for it to cool down. So I just casually mentioned to my dad who when he was next over, grabbed one from his extras in basement and brought it up and replaced it and this one works. So in each case yes good to have on hand but other things I don’t know why he is keeping any of it - well I do know - “waste not want not” he grew up with buying his mom a gift and she telling him sharply “take it back, we can’t afford that” (he has hated giving gifts since except recycled ones)

I told her that I had a bunch of that kind of stuff, too, but donated it all after asking myself, "but, honestly, are you at all likely to do it?" The answer was almost always no.

When looking at an item like your pair of jeans, oh my goodness that really resonates with me. Because that’s exactly what I think, I can use this for such and such. The very best question that I ask myself is, “would I pick this up off of the free table at a yard sale?” Would I pick up these jeans and take them home so that I could possibly use them to patch things? No of course I wouldn’t. If the need ever arose, I would look for the jeans then. I certainly wouldn’t want to store them. I must confess, I’ve almost been like a hoarder with items like this. But this one question I now ask myself when deciding about an item instantly gives me a yes, or a no, and thank God, it’s mostly NO. If I wouldn’t accept an item even if it was free, it goes.

And especially during those times when you want to go out but the mosquito population is really bad. So go for it! And thank you very much for your honesty and opening up your hearts and home to the public. I'm working on decreasing sewing, yarn, and needlework. A little bit of it is easy but the rest is hard. I am being successful with getting rid of the paperwork and books. And I live in two rooms! The worst thing is when I bang my toes on the Rubbermaid storage containers. Getting rid of clothes is easy - give them away while they still look nice so someone else can enjoy them. And a lot of people know how to mend and don't mind it so those ripped jeans would be great for someone. Thank you for the encouragement and the reminders. I've commented on other videos, but I feel compelled to tell you again how much you have inspired me! TRULY inspired me. You are so REAL and relatable!!!! I tried watching a few episodes of The Home Edit but I DON'T have a huge walk in closet I can organize like that. And they don't minimize anything, they just provide a way to organize and visualize it better, which is great but I need less decisions to make in my life! After watching some of your videos I went home and said "Honey, these pictures above the breakfast nook. Do we love them, do they make us happy and peaceful? Or do you feel like they just create clutter and anxiety?" He immediately said clutter so we took them down. Something so simple was a breath of fresh air and made the space feel SO MUCH better. Then I cleaned out a small shelf basket in the laundry room with sewing supplies. I don't sew, I don't have a machine, and if I need a repair I'll take it to the alterations lady. I don't need all this thread or these patches or extra snap replacements that come with shirts. Again, something SO small felt so good getting rid of. I also try to ask myself if I were to need something like this, would I remember that it's here? Or would I end up going out and buying it again anyway. (I had 3 big spools of black thread and a bunch of small ones. Ugh!) So if it's not easily accessible and memorable, I should probably just get rid of it, pass it on to someone that WILL use it. I too, grew up modestly. My parents were born in the 30's so they were raised around the depression (I'm 34yr now so they were later in life when they had me). But we didn't have tupperware, we used butter bowls. We kept scrap fabric for repairs. Any sturdy box was a keeper, and so was every bread tie. My dad is one that will keep any little tin or box because "That's good to keep paper clips in." Yes dad, but you have 30 of them and only use and need one!

In the past I have saved those shards of pottery for the bottoms of other pots. So nice to hear others that struggle with these similar things. Also. when it comes to clothing, someone mentioned that women fleeing domestic violence sometimes leave with just the clothes on their backs. That was very powerful and motivating.

Love your videos! One of the questions i ask myself when getting rid of somethings is if im keeping it put of fear. That simple question has helped me declutter ALOT of stuff.

This was so helpful. I grew up moving every couple of years and we lived in various levels of poverty (including brief periods of homelessness). When you add ADD to the mix, it can make decluttering an emotionally charged and overwhelming challenge. I appreciate your help and encouragement!

This is so on point! I found myself going through clothing. "This is in really good condition" Try it on... "Oh this is too big" I could alter it! "I never loved it like I thought I would". OK, get rid of it! BUT WAIT, "I could make this boiled wool jacket into slippers". REALLY. It went into the keep pile, then the donate it pile, then a new pile for things I can fix, then back in the donate pile, then a craft it into something else pile, and finally in the donate pile. One item down, only five drawers, one closet and four bins to go!

"Is this thing causing stress for my spouse/family?" Oi! That struck a chord. My husband is very patient + I'm doing better, but sometimes the things, especially in the to-decide-about category drive him a bit crazy...Good reminders. Thanks!

I have made such progress over the last few years in slimming down our belongings. It brings me so much peace and calms my anxiety... but watching this video made me realize some areas I need to revisit!

I tend to over purchase notebooks, journals, office supplies, school supplies. I have a business so I always have the excuse to use it at my office if needed. It is the never ending task of which “planner” or organization system works best. As a result, paper clutter is always an issue. I am going to re watch your video on your to do list and system! Thanks 🙏🏻
