So many gems are dropped in this video. I'm so happy you found someone to help you virtually. I had a few of the same issues with my first. I was so afraid that a nipple shield would become a crutch, but nope - a total lifesaver. I'm sharing this with all my new mamas because the best part of your video is your anecdotes about your experience. You're speaking so much truth. Don't be afraid to push on the ducts while Saga is nursing (and while you pump). Pressing/massaging will help move the milk out of the ducts that are prone to clog. You can also squeeze your milk out and rub it on your nipples. Your milk has amazing healing properties too! Keep going mama! You're doing an AMAZING job.

@@shamelessmaya You're helping a lot of mamas just by sharing your testimony. I've breastfed 3 children (almost 7 years total) and your story took me right back to that first year. I would have loved to see someone who looked like me share her struggles and triumph. I definitely wouldn't have felt so alone... while having support. When you're so exhausted and everything else about motherhood and postpartum is so new, it's so easy to feel alone. Thank you!!!

Maya!!! I’m 7 weeks postpartum and it’s like you’re literally reading a script from my life. My daughter is no down to one bottle but going to try the night nursing to increase supply. I agree with everything! My son is 6 months and I am just now starting to feel confident in my mother abilities and in my choice to breastfeed. I agree support is my number one tip. Surround yourself with support. If it come from family and friends great but if not go online and find groups. Also a lot of hospitals and YMCA offer breastfeeding groups.

It’s been 1,5 month for me when I had my son of pure pain. I was basically crying while breastfeeding. Thank god I had a nurse who helped me to push through. She gave me some kind of aloe Vera gel for my nipples, showed me how to breastfeed sideways so that the baby can declogg my breast. Also the best way to deglogg is for the baby to do it because they hit so many more “nerves” (for lack of a better word) than a pump would. Because I tried pumping and it didn’t solve the issue at all. Also, walk around with your nipples free lol, everything that covers them (fabric) for too long makes it worse. Those things helped me a lot back then!! Thanks for sharing Maya! Wish I had seen this 3 years ago!

Engorged breasts are the worst. In my experience, cabbage leaves was a God send. Once they start to wilt, keep changing it. Such a relief. I slept with cabbage on and it went away same day. That and run hot water on them in the shower while massaging.

This video resonates with me so so much 😭😭😭 this was my story , bad latch, thrush , exclusively pumping , relatching baby at 4 months 😭😭 it was such a hard journey !!!! I live in Botswana and there are no lactation consultants here, I had a few zoom appointments with my aunt in the UK who is but I was so defeated so broken and I totally understand what to you mean when you say you felt inadequate. I literally stopped feeding to pump cause my nipples were so damaged !!! When I had thrush my son's pediatrician was amazing she gave me this gel like cream that went on my nipple and on baby's tongue as well , I've totally forgotten the name now cause he is 2. Thank you for sharing more women need to, wish I had seen videos likes this before breastfeeding ... ❤️❤️

So I’m a new Mother/Baby nurse. Mainly Postpartum and I had the luxury of spending a day with lactation (which I really enjoyed). One of the interesting things I learned and I try and teach my patients is: The baby is the best at extracting the milk (especially colostrum). The breast pump is simply going to stimulate the breast. Which is great when baby isn’t feeding. Breastfeeding is so interesting and I love vids like these. I always learn something and try and spread the word to my new moms.

Great video! Lactation nurses all the way! Mine helped so much! I also had a nurse and pediatrician make me feel like shit and try to push formula on me. I found a better pediatrician and a lactation specialist. I was given a nipple guard too but it actually caused my milk supply to decrease because my son couldn’t push enough milk through so just be cautious of that. The lactation specialist pointed this out and told me to throw mine away and instead worked on getting a good latch and taught me how to tell if he was getting enough milk by watching his gulps. Her letting me know what was normal, ie. soreness, tenderness, and that I didn’t actually need the guard for those things and also what to watch out for like excessive bleeding, swollen ducts, was invaluable. She also told me to massage my nipples and breasts in the shower, since I like them hot, and to apply lanolin afterwards as well as after each nursing session. I think this helped me avoid clogged ducts and helped relieve the incredible soreness I had. 💜💜

One thing I don’t think is talked about often (atleast I hadn’t heard about it) is when babies begin eating solids, balancing that food with breastfeeding. I was still breastfeeding on demand, but my baby started to lose weight. I was advised by the pediatrician to start breastfeeding on a schedule (therefore breastfeeding less often) and giving more nutrition through food and that got us back on track. May not be the right path for everyone, but that’s what happened for me.

@@shamelessmaya Yes! We also have so much societal pressure making us think that we're failures if we can't figure things out in the first 5 mins. Babies actually know exactly what to do, but we often can't relax enough in the days, weeks, months right after birth to let them lead the nursing process. I wish someone had told me to slather my nipples with cream in the weeks before giving birth, because the nipples just aren't ready for the work they are about to put in. Sometimes as teeth start to come in, you may need cream as Saga learns how not to scrape or bite with her new teeth. I learned that breastfeeding was a test of my patience and ability to slow TF down. Once I figured those two things out, I was golden.

Thank you for sharing. Breastfeeding started off great for me, then got tricky as I was planning on what to do when I would go back to work. Unfortunately, I was home for a month after giving birth and had to go back to work because maternity leave doesn't exist in the u.s. and I'm the breadwinner. For 2 solid weeks after giving birth, my son breastfed just fine. Never had any issues with his latch and eventually my nipples stopped hurting with minimal lanolin application. After that, I was stressing out over pumping and much to my hesitation, introducing formula. I really wanted to exclusively breastfeed for a year, but I didn't have time to build a stash. My supply has dropped with not being able to breastfeed often and pumping only once at work. Now my son barely latches. Finding a formula that I was willing to compromise on was a saga in and of itself. I'm considering meeting a lactation consultant to see what can be done given my situation. Currently feeling defeated and my partner won't empathize.

Amazing video! Sharing your truth and raw experiences will help so many other mothers. I wish it went easier for you, but you got through it and I feel your frustration on wanting to stick with natural! I had a very similar experience, but I was lucky enough to have a great nurse who watched me feed and said I tensed my shoulders and hunched forwards when I fed my baby. This was making it awkward when my baby would latch on. I then learned how a baby should be properly latching on, and this made it a lot easier for us both. Initially. INITIALLY, oh there's more as you know! I then developed mastitis, and this was incredibly painful, unlike any pain I have ever experienced before. I ended up going to the hospital to have the infected area drained (yes it was horrific but I was lucky enough to spot a gas tank and asked for pain relief!). It was super gross and painful but this helped a lot. It went away after a while and I breastfed throughout the experience, even though I was in tears every time. I'm glad I stuck with it! Keep sharing your stories ladies, I wish I had access to this stuff back then

I wish society would stop telling women breastfeeding is “easy” it’s not! And im saying this as someone whose baby latched immediately and never had any hiccups. I’ve exclusively breastfed for 14mos now and even though I didn’t have any issues it was still hard mentally and emotionally being the only one feeding her (she wouldn’t take a bottle & I gave up pumping) it’s takes a lot of support. I think women go in with unrealistic expectations and it can crush your ego and sense of self worth

Love this. So real and true. The beginning journey of breastfeeding is brutal. At some point we got the hang of it, and have also been night nursing which helps my supply of the good milk boob lol. And the Legendairy pills are amazing for clogs! Looking to supplement at times now because I have returned to work a few months ago and so tired of pumping 😓 trying to hang in there. Kind of hard to get my baby on formula since most of them do not taste good and don’t taste like breastmilk 😅 Really love the realness of describing the breastfeeding journey. I had ALL the breastfeeding woes and sorrows during my 1st postpartum period. I had a lactation consultant visit in the hospital and another about 1 month after giving birth because it wasn't going well and I wanted to give up. I stuck with it for 6 months. My son would shallow feed, meaning he would not feed long enough to empty my breasts. So I have the discomfort of full breasts and trying to pump to empty, including in the wee hours of the morning. Tip that worked for me that I saw in my research was to 'turn on/off my boobs". I would use a heating pad to warm up my breast prior to a breastfeeding session. Then I would use a ice pad to cool down my breast so simmer her down. I did too much pumping to quickly and my left breast was hyper-simulating. I would feel letdown all the time and it was crazy! But that helped so much!!

How long did it take for you to get a consistent flow once you started night feeding ? Once you started night feeding would you still give her the bottle during the day or did you go cold turkey ? When you were pumping how much were you producing? I only get a .05 so that has me worry that when I do latch my daughter she’s not getting enough so I supplement with formula

They’re little silver caps you put over your nipples that are antibacterial. Right after the baby comes off put some breast milk on the nipple and put the silverette over it. This is “wet wound healing” and absolutely healed my nipples way faster than just using lanolin or coconut oil :)

Great video I struggled with my milk supply and it just went away one day and never came back 🤦🏽‍♀️ I tried gave it 3 months to come back and just recently gave up hope on breastfeeding. Now I’m just looking forward to table food and me making the food myself because that I can control. My breast failed me but I can control what my child eats 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m a physician and I’ve never heard of a thrush infection secondary to nursing. Also just because baby girls tounge was white doesn’t mean it was thrush. It could just be milk residue. If it was thrush it wouldn’t go away unless it’s treated with an anti fungal medication. I’m glad nursing is going well for you. It definitely isn’t for the weak.

Oh also.. instead of always washing the pumping parts you can put it in the fridge after pumping so you don’t have to wash it as often

My son was the opposite, I would feed him breastmilk in the bottle by day and breastfed him at night, and one day he didn't want the bottle, he just wanted the breast. Also, make sure to drink lots of water which helps with milk production.

I used the Shea Moisture Lanolin version bcuz of the chapped burning feeling... Breastfed my baby 2 years. She only ever gained weight, I on the other hand lost the weight. 😦🥺

How did you get through the pain? I had the fire nipples and cried too. My husband came home with formula and sad to say it was over. I let my breast heal for two weeks then tried to start back but she cried and cried like I wasn't feeding enough so I went back to formula. I'm pregnant again and this time I'm having a home birth and I'm going to do everything I can to strictly breast feed.
