It feels like the story of Justin--a washed-up, former High School star athlete--who has been struggling to find a direction in life. After a trail of failed careers, he finally hits on inspiration: a mentorship program for teens. With the help of his two younger brothers--who return to their hometown from the Big Cities where they made it big, unlike him--he hopes to guide these youths and leave them better prepared than he was. Tensions bubble between the brothers, for all that they make talk about the importance of loved ones to their mentees, resentment and old wounds and their fraying relationships make it clear that the three aren't as close as they used to be. Certainly not as close as they wish they were. They're prepared to give up on thr program and part ways, back to their distant relationship, when--tragedy strikes. Their father falls ill. And now, the McElroy brothers must confront what it really means to be a family.

a daring but ultimately satisfying departure from the usual mcelroy content, this film delicately handles the issues surrounding boyhood, arachnid negative stereotypes and the dangers of playing god with clowns. truly deserving of the 69 oscars it won immediately on release

If a descent into McElroys is your goal, MBMBAM could still be the title to this "movie." I could imagine a serious movie with that title.

The interpretation I got was: Justin - the once overachieving student who was put away for a crime he didn’t commit, only to be released back into society years later Travis - constantly looked up to Justin, and became lost once Justin disappeared from his life Griffin - teacher who is being threatened with termination due to the school’s poor graduation rate and must motivate his students, while also implementing those same techniques to bring his family together after a fallout from so many years ago

If this was a real movie with fictional characters, these are the vibes I get from the trailer: A twist of fate brings the McElroy brothers back together after Justin loses his job in the city and moves back to their hometown. However, things aren’t the same as they were when they were kids - Justin is at odds with Griffin, who was content to stay in their small town and is satisfied with his job as a high school teacher. Travis, who is stuck in the middle, tries desperately to keep the family together even though he always dreamed of moving away and making it big as an actor. Their father Clint and the town’s mayor both watched the brothers grow up, but know that they have to step away and let them figure out what kind of life they want to live on their own. The McElroys will have to work out their differences, revisit their childhood, and figure out what it truly means to be a family.
