I've had my small trailer(6x4) for 40 years. It had been in a smash when I bought it, I repaired it & drove to Qld with it (when I moved there) I have rebuilt it 5 times over the years. No. 3 build it got Landrover hubs & wheels because my first 4wd was a Landy so it became a 4wd trailer & I also made it tipping. I too have 2 jerry can holders (1 permanent for water which is very handy) & the spare lives on top of a A frame for clearance. It's last rebuild it got a 360 deg hitch, 1100 kg Springs & a new floor. It's had a flogging over the years, going in some silly places & carrying some heavy weights. The only original parts left are the side walls & tailgate, everything else has been replaced at one time or another but I still refer to it as the original & it too will probably see me to my grave 🤣

Love a good old trailer, mine is 53 years old. I was in prep at primary school when we built it, it got to stand on the floor when it was welded to the cross members, lucky enough not to stand on an actual weld and burn my foot. Still use it, its been rebuilt a few times, would hate to know how kilometres or miles that it has travelled. Love it when my nephew borrows it and I tell him its still 8 years older than him.

Awesome trailer 😍 I also gonna put a trailer behind my 1965 Unimog. I want to build it myself. Im allowed to build a 750kg trailer. And I going to put 40inch unimog tires under it with leaf springs from a Suzuki samurai 😃

I didn’t realize how bad the Anne Beadell Highway was until I joined the Facebook group ‘Anne Beadell Highway’. They reckon it’s the worst in Australia for corrugations. I won’t be taking the caravan lol.

It’s actually hell. By far the worst road I have ever driven. I actually don’t recommend it as a trip- not a lot to see, just a lot of car damage

Same axe, only replaced two heads and three handles...having said that, I have more passion for my trailer(s) than my tugs.

I rolled mine over on fraser when it was standard. You are correct. Standard width axle is dangerous. Extend draw bar is good too. Payed $600 for mine.

Saw one of these things up the street behind a modern 4wd one day that was completely rebuilt. Looked fantastic. If I had any mechanical ability I would have one of these things tomorrow.

Loved it, as a former trailer manufacturer I've got a keen interest in how people setup and modify trailers. I've always dismissed ex army trailers for all the reasons you noted that you changed about it. I'm shocked at how rust free it is too, trailers are notorious for bad rust.

Thanks for doing this one mate. As I'm looking at a trailer build soon it's great to see this. Such an old solid trailer.

Ah, interesting, we are just looking for a bigger trailer to replace the tiny little Erde. I think we are going for something enclosed though for security and it becomes a little shed when not in use. Older trailers are a good investment. The one we drag around on the back of the Coaster is 1980 although we did replace all the running gear in it.

Love the trailer and all you have done to it. I almost brought one of these a few years back but ended up building one based on the same design but slightly larger. I recently removed the canvas top added a solid top a slide out kitchen and I am about to a roof top tent.

awesome vid mate - doing up a camper out of a no5 atm... yet to do the shocks and new springs.... you happy with the shocks used then ? i want to swap out the hubs too... did you have to swap the axle to do it ?

This is no longer a NO5 trailer 🤣 mines behind my Defender so perfect width. Mines stock, with the only mods for the tail gate, added a jockey wheel and a DO35 hitch. Reason it’s so light is to let a soldier lift and push it by themselves and drop it if stuck out bush. Love my trailer so strong and full of character

you cant beat the build quality from those times - the tech was simple. . I have a 1986 British Military Sankey trailer, uses the same Lunette ring and hitch setup (ex military defender 90 Wolf variant). I converted my trailer into a solid shell camper by adding a canopy to the top, night heater for the cold winters in the UK and off-road with it whenever I can. I think if you treat it well, it will never ever fail you - if you get a puncture you can still drag it out of the bush and fix it later with a hammer and a few other tools! I just wish I could get to Aus in mine and do some touring. Have you checked and changed the bearing on it? trailers have hard lives and the bearings take a beating! make a habit of touching the hub when you arrive somewhere to feel for excessive heat.
@harryfisher139
@harryfisher139 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree mate. Yeah I do the bearings in the hubs every 6 months and just re-machined the hitch bearing 2 months ago

Main reason for towing? I see firewood is a big part of it but could you get away with not taking it on a big trip?
@harryfisher139

Mainly firewood. I can definitely do without it, but I like towing and keeping stuff off my roof and putting weight on a 3rd axle instead of loading up my car
