I am going through stage 3 breast cancer over the last year. I've had a double mastectomy and 8 of my 9 lymph nodes removed on the right side. I went through 33 sessions of radiation. Now I am waiting for my reconstruction surgery to be scheduled. The doctor told me I had to wait 3 months after my last radiation treatment for the reconstruction surgery to be done. I've finally healed from my 2nd degree burns caused by the radiation. I thank you for sharing your story to help others.

Hi Nikki ❤ I don't have cancer, but for the last 10 years I have participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure. It's a 5km run/walk to raise funds for breast cancer. Even though I've not been affected, this is a cause I've always felt strongly in supporting. I truly am in awe of the women (and men) who have fought this fight! Your scars are definitely something to be proud of and I give you mad props! Sending love from Canada ❤

I loved your comment of warrior scars, very inspirational and true! I have had a lumpectomy + LN axillary dissection 2x (3pos), and i understand your arm pain, I'm still in phys therapy. I will be undergoing chemo later this week, but I too consider myself a Warrior. Emotion can creep up and be very confusing, on one hand you are determined to get through this journey a fighter, but sometimes may wonder how this happened to me? Keep going sista', i tell myself the same. It's also wonderful to have a partner elevate their love and support for you. Stay alive and Warrior beautiful!!!

Hello Dee, I am a breastie too and have lymphoedema in my right arm. Can I suggest that you 'walk' your arm up a wall as if your hand were a spider, do it slowly and try to go just a bit further up each day. Once your radiotherapy and surgical scars have healed it would be great to go swimming. It really helps with range of movement and also with lymphoedema. Stay strong, you are doing really well. XX

What a fantastic detailed description of your surgery Dee! Well done! As you know, I too just had a mastectomy with lymph node removal, and I’m happy to know the pain I’m feeling is part of the ‘normal’ healing process. The upper arm area in particular, and the cording pain is the hardest part for me. I’m doing my physio, 2-3 times a day, but each morning it feels like I’m starting at day 1 again! Gets easier towards the end if the day tho. Enjoy your break away, as it’s well deserved for ye both I’m sure. Fingers crossed the good weather will stay too cause isn’t everywhere nicer when the sun shines! 😉 Well done again. You should be very proud of yourself. ❤️

Dee; I have followed you from your diagnosis all the way thru to your surgery and now recovery. I actually looked forward to your next installment as it was like visiting with a friend. I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer (DCIS, stage 3, triple positive) in June 2018. You have been such an inspiration, given me hope and strength during my chemo with A/C just when I wanted to give up as I was so sick and debilitated from that awful "red devil." I'm thrilled to see that you are doing much better and still giving out useful information for us Pink Warriors that are a few steps behind you. You tip on getting a bumbag for your drains is great. I was wondering what I was going to do with drains coming out of both sides of me as I am having a double mastectomy in January. I have been ripped apart after 6 months of chemo. My body is feeling the effects of Taxol and I'm tired and just plumb worn out. But I realize that the hardest part hasn't even gotten here. I still need to face surgery and I haven't yet decided if I will go flat or have reconstruction using my own tissue. I just don't want implants after doing my research on them and listening to other women in my support group. It's a monumental life changing decision. We all make the decision that suits us best and I will get there just as you did and come out of all of this crazy cancer journey stronger. I too pan on wearing my scars as my badge of courage. Stay healthy and strong. Sending hugs and well wishes from the states. XX Karen

Dee Doherty yes it was devastating to even hear the word cancer. The treatment is, i can't describe it in words. My family and I have been doing as much as we can to help in anyway. She lives with me and her dad and sister. Grandmothers is there when ever she need them. The oncologist have set 4 cycles of AC treatment, 1 down and 3 to go. She is sleeping a lot. So i try to get her up to interact with us a little, like just watching tv or talking with her, mostly when she feel up to it. Thank you again!!!! Have a good day.

You're doing your best! The sleep is important -- and she'll remember very little of it when it's all over! I'm sure you're helping a lot - even when you think you are doing a little! x

I wonder if immediate lymphodeema is more common for younger women. I had my mastectomy two months ago wiith sentinel nodes removal and it occurred also immediately after surgery. That arm is still bigger than my other arm, but it’s getting less. Also I like to mention, in the Netherlands (where I live) we get a heart shaped pillow for under your armpit (it gives great support while you lay down those first days!) and a small fabric bag for the drain pot, made my volunteers from the breast cancer foundation. It’s so sweet and I really appreciated it! I hope you’re doing well and the cancer is gone for good. My breast cancer turned out to be metastatic and I have 2 tumors in my liver and one metastasis in my pubic bone. Tomorrow is the second attempt to get a representative biopsy of the liver metastasis. The result will end up in the best treatment plan and prognosis. Thank you for your informative videos! 💋

I was just diagnosed with breast cancer 3 weeks ago. I’m scheduled for a double mastectomy on September 2 and as of now I’m not Doing reconstruction. I’m terrified and there’s so much to learn I’m such a short time. I’ll be watching Your videos to try to learn more of what I’m facing. I’ll pray for You.

Milli Wagoner don’t watch more than you can handle. You just need to know about your first chemo drugs... what to expect and how to look after yourself. Believe me, there is plenty of time to deal with each one as it comes!!

🙋🏻♀️ Hi Milli: I was Dx @ the very start of June/2022 & by the end of July I'd already undergone a bilateral along with complete axillary clearance. (42-nodes). I wasn't offered reconstruction @ the time because of the radiation I was yet to receive. But even if I was offered "immediate-recon" I'm not so sure I would. Anyway I was just curious to know "if" you changed your mind @ all. & You're right about the amount of info given is just so overwhelming. I am 5 weeks into chemo @tm & had to shave my head a few days ago. 🤞 I hope you are doing much-much better now. 🤍 Xx

Thank You Dee, you are an inspiration to those that will have to go through this. Doctors and surgeons explain things, but you explain more in layman's terms which is easily understood. I enjoyed seeing it as well, just talking is not enough, you have been a tremendous help. Now I can explain to my niece, or better still I will show her your video. She does not have access to the internet believe it or not.

First of all, bou have things changed since I had my surgery in 2010. I never heard of the Peco dressing. And I don't think they had any type of bag yet, to hold the drain. I also used a what we call in America "Fannie Pack". But the part that affected me most from your video was the horrendous amount of pain you must have gone through. OUCH!!! The pain you were in must have been with your surgery, your rib, and the cording all at once, I can't even imagine. I also had cording and the lymphadema 2 days after my surgery too. For me, it was not after my mastectomies, which I had after chemo. It was after my lymph node dissection, which was before chemo. I was told it was a blood clot at first too. But once checked, it was found to be lymphadema and (believe it or not) a gallbladder full of stones, which I should have had immediate surgery to have removed. But instead, because the chemo was more important, I had to wait till after chemo, and my mastectomy and Rads, to have the surgery. But for you to have your rib issues too? I could never imagine! Also, this was the best KZbin Mastectomy video I have seen. Great job explaining everything. And thank you for talking about the cording. It wasn't talked about at all when I went through it. And because of the little amount known back then, I ended up in therapy for it for a few years. And I still have a lowered amount of mobility in my arm. And its awesome to see your husband be part of your therapy, as much as he is. I have also never heard of your condition either. There are a few other reasons why they would do immediate reconstruction. But you explained yours the best. And as for the lymph node removal, you also have to be carefull that you don't get a hangnail. Yes, even a hangnail can cause a lymphodema flair up. I woke up 3 days ago with my entire left arm was swollen. That was my first sign that I had some kind of an infection going on. Later that evening, I noticed my middle finger was red from had a hangnail. And this is what cause the flair up. This has happened to me a few times. Even a splinter in one of my fingers on my left hand, has cause a flair up. Not fun!!! Thank you so much for sharing so much of your story with us. You and your husband are so awesome! God Bless!

I have not watched all there is to watch here, so please forgive me if this is redundant- were you able to have reconstructive surgery? I am at a crossroads about having surgery, and, am told it is not common here in the U.S. for IBC. I finished chemo two months ago, and my experience paralleled your own on my levels. A deep thanks for all you have done for us here! :) This is Katherine, again, 2 mos. (8/8) later- I had been having very bad leg / feet pain after chemo., and so was very hesitant to have surgery. Saw the surgeon, and turned him down flat. Was getting a great deal of pressure from my oncologist to have the surgery. Saw my scans with the radiologist and they looked free of disease / perfect! I, like you, feared the process of healing from the potential mastectomy as I've not quite healed from potentially chemo.(?) related pain. After seeing your process being so painful, on all levels, I am glad I opted out. I am very grateful you showed the raw reality of healing your arm. It may have been too much for me in my current state! This message may not have made much sense, but you helped!

Hi Dee, thank you very much for taking the time to do the video, it is really helpful for someone who is going on the same path. I am just disappointed that in Belgium they do not use the Jackson Pratt and the Pico dressing - would be so much easier. Instead after the operation a lot of liquid is collecting in the cavity of mastectomy and all they can do is to extract it with drain. However all these punctions decrease a lot the quality of life, especially after 6 weeks from operation and still don’t see an end of it.
