thank you for the very good video I'm having surgery on the 28th of Dec. I'm 75 and have had a laminectomy on the lower back, and scoliosis that also has bone spurs, I'm hoping this surgery gives my arms and neck more stability, I don't have much help I will stay @ Son's home for a week or two. hope I will be able to manage @ home on my own thanks again for your video and hope you continued to do well.

I have watched many KZbin videos of ACDF surgery and yours is by far, the most comprehensive and helpful! Your description of your pain prior to surgery matches my pain to a T. My surgery is next month and I am in so much misery, like you I cannot wait for this surgery to take place. Thank you for the extensive play-by-play of the surgery. Presented like a true teacher! I hope you are continuing to make a complete recovery!

Thank you so much for sharing. I myself have been diagnosed with DDD about a month ago. Getting ready to start PT and injections. My chiropractor took X-rays and he was finally able to push for an MRI. Disc’s 6&7. He wanted a 2nd opinion so my info was sent to my neurosurgeon. He would like to see me push through PT and injections and if that doesn’t help we will revisit surgery. I was honestly praying for surgery because if my neck pain. It’s so miserable. By the time I am finished with shots and PT I will more than likely be pushed into another MRI and then it will be time for surgery. It’s insane what insurance makes you go through first in order to fix the problem. Glad you did well.

Okay so I watched the rest of the video and am nodding head. So my surgeon is doing access on side not front, but we have similar symptoms so hopefully after 4 years and facing SSDI and early retirement I can get back in the game. Am approaching this slowly, doing my homework, watching a bunch of videos etc. When I had my 4 stents put in neck at cath lab at Stanford 2009, was awake for whole thing and it was coordinated chaos, I mean WOW. Then I put out the video on my page to educate people because we were the guinea pigs for the new procedure. But also know I don't know what I don't know, so THANK YOU for helping me make my list of Q's to ask 4/21, the list is growing. Thanks again for taking the time and sharing your life with us. God bless.

Holly, I totally hear you on the anesthesia. I was too, but it is fine. Yes, I was nervous and that morning did not feel like myself but reminded myself all will be well, have faith in the Lord and the doctors and tried to acknowledge my nerves and tell myself I am okay. I expressed the nerves to the nurses and they acknowledge it as well. I think most everyone feels the same. I was given a sedative right before being wheeled in which acted super fast I barely had time to say see you later to my husband and I was out! You'll do well and not be in pain! Come back and let me know how it goes! Sending prayers and healing vibes!

Thank you so much for detailing your journey! I’m almost to the point of having one and have been stressed out about the recovery process. I’ve had 2 ACL and Medial Meniscus surgeries in my 30s and a knee replacement 5.5 yrs ago in my 40s. Now I’m 52 and facing this in the coming months. I’ve compared this cervical stenosis surgery recovery to be much harder than the replacement was but you have such a positive vibe and are making it seem much easier than I’ve been imagining. I was diagnosed with congenital cervical spinal stenosis, arthritis, degenerative disc disease and a pinched nerve now on both sides of my neck back in late 2013. Now due to that I have bulging discs in all C3-C7 discs with the C3-C4 being the most degraded and the others not as bad yet. The first Dr I saw last month suggested surgery now, went to a second opinion to a brain and spine Neurosurgeon and she says it’s bad but not horrible like she’s worked on. Perhaps she was referring to the discs that aren’t as bad yet. I’ll be going to her when the time comes. Until then, I’m on muscle relaxers and will then move to pain injections when the nerves get bad. Right now there’s just minor compression and the pinched nerve acts up when I overdo lifting heavy things. Thank you for easing my mind by sharing with us your story. I hope you’re in excellent spine health and living a great quality of life.

Thank u so much for sharing your experience! I could not explain it any better. 4 yrs ago, I had a work accident. After numerous x-rays, CT, MRIs, it was finally discovered 2.5 yrs after my injury, that my c5-c6 was the culprit for my pain. 5 months later, I finally was approved for Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion. Surgery was on July 16, 2021. With the help of PT, I did feel better for a few months then plateau, and pain was returning. (I have continued PT throughout.) 8 months after the surgery, the surgeon suspected that the plate may not have been reinforced enough. X-rays and MRI showed that the c4 took the brunt of bracing the plate and was repeating what the c5-c6 had gone thru. A 2nd surgery was needed to 1) remove the orig plate, and 2) attach a new plate to the c4-c5. During my 2nd surgery on Sept 15, 2022, it was discovered that the screws of the orig plate had loosened but thankfully, the c5-c6 discs fused! The immediate concern was that cervical vertebrae was shifting, bending. The surgeon then ended up applying a new plate from c4 to c7. (My c6-c7 were fused congenitally.) A big plate. Surgeon called me a few days ago and said I needed a THIRD surgery in the coming weeks! Going in from the back of the neck, another plate will be installed on the left side of the c4-c7 plate. I imagine a plate "sandwich." This is where I am today. I still am hopeful. I have to be.

I really appreciate how thorough you were! And can I also say, I’m 31 and waiting for the same surgery. My situation sounds almost identical to yours, same arm radiating, same discs, same 3 fingers numb, and I CANNOT believe you withstood that pain for that long! The day after my second adjustment from my Chiro was when I had the “pop” and the day after I was in the ER with pain and getting an MRI. I can’t even imagine weeks upon weeks of that insane pain. The only reason I’m able to survive waiting for my surgery (it’s in 3 weeks) is due to two steroid epidural injections ive had since my initial pop. I hope your husband knows how incredibly strong you are!!

I am sorry you have pain and must endure waiting! I had to wait because the insurance company gets to decide all the hoops I must jump through to determine if I can be eligible for an MRI. I am glad the video was helpful, Kelly! As far as doing my job, it was awkward in the classroom, especially when we were masked and desks were in rows, to watch my feet because I cannot look directly down anymore. But, now that I can rearrange things better and have more space I am fine. I do get tired from checking papers on desks and looking down all day, but I do okay. I use a pillow to help support my arms when reading and using a laptop at home. At school, I rest my elbow on a desk and sit while we read. I leave my heavy textbooks on a podium and walk about empty handed more than I used to. The kids have adapted well to help decorate the higher places. I teach teens, so they are willing to help and are able to help. Good luck with your surgery! Come back and tell me how you are doing!

Thank you! I slept the first night or two in the recliner, tipped back a bit. I was definitely more comfortable in bed after that! I am a side sleeper and it was absolutely fine until about week 6 or 7 perhaps, when I felt like the brace was not needed anymore. My doctor had me wear it for 9 weeks. I was definitely ready for it to be off! Of course, I had tired muscles once it did come off! As far as getting dressed, I was fine. I don't recall having issues. The weather was fair so I generally word a tshirt. I did have troubles bending forward to start so no socks or shoes, though I wasn't allowed out for the first 2 weeks, so not an issue. Thank you so much for this. I am due to have the exact same surgery at the same levels within the next eight weeks. I'm a little apprehensive but you have really helped put my mind at rest. A question: did you, prior to the surgery have nerve pain in your shoulder blades top and bottom, as if they were being pulled downwards by any chance? This is my main symptom.
@theplanninggirl

My pain was mainly in my left side. It started at the top of my left bottom side of my neck and radiated across to my left shoulder and down my left arm. Also down my back via past the soft space to the right of my left shoulder blade to the spine. It was absolute hell. I am so fine now, honestly. I plan to do a follow up video in the next couple of days as it has been six months and I am mostly ME! Let me know how things go, Back on the Bayou! I will be thinking of you!

I have bilateral foraminal stenosis and some instability at C4/C5 so this may be why some of our symptoms have been different, as in mine is on both sides, though more on the right, dominant side (would be, wouldn't it? lol) It IS absolute hell - nerve pain is the worst and you can't describe it to someone who has never had it, it's like nothing else. Mine goes far down the spine too and initiaily I wondered if I had two lots of issues, some in the cervical and some in the thoracic but the MRI showed just cervical. Anyway, thanks so much again. I’m having this surgery next Friday 8/26/22. I just found out how bad my neck was yesterday. My dr got my MRI results and wanted to schedule this immediately. He is the same dr that did my spinal fusion a year and a half ago. My spinal fusion was from L2-S1. I am very anxious about doing my neck. I do have lots of pain in both arms and numbness and tingling in both hands. So my question is how are you doing 2 yrs after? How long did you have to wear your collar? And did you have much difficulty swallowing after the surgery? I hear that is a big complaint. Thank you for your video. It is very informative!

Thank you for watching and sharing your information! I wish you the best of luck next Friday! I will be thinking of you! I am well. I was told to wear the collar 24/7 until about week 6 when the doctor said I could open it or remove it when sitting still, such as watching TV. I did that. As I did so, I'd get braver and leave it off while I got dressed for example. By week 9, I was done and tossed it out. The velcro straps were super worn by that time. I had no troubles at all swallowing and had a regular dinner right after the surgery: turkey meat, green beans, potatoes. I did not have troubles at home either. I will say that my voice does not project as well as it once did. I cannot call out across the gym or the outdoor field when I am at school. My regular speaking voice is fine, I just cannot yell out anymore. Swallowing is slightly different. It is not inhibited. I would not have fears. But you will notice it is different. Not painful, not scary, not uncomfortable. But you will notice it is different. Come back and let me know how you are doing! Take care!

The screws and plates are solid enough by the time you are allowed to take off the brace, but permanent at one year. @@theplanninggirl Well the doctors unfortunately have not been the most helpful. I was informed via an urgent care APN that I should have seen a Neurologist since the beginning. So that's the referral I have now and waiting on an appointment. Then the neurologist can hopefully give me a diagnostic of what I'm looking at. This intermittent cycle that appears never ending can make you loose your mind. Trying those trigger point injections first to see if muscle knots are the cause or if it is directly coming from the site of the bilateral bulging disc at C5 C6 area. Hopefully this will give me an indication where the problem potential lies before I see or after I see the neurologist. Did you ever think it was getting better but every time it was you were or nearly back to square one? It's like it tricks you into thinking it will fully heal on its own.

At one point I was wondering if I was getting better, I recall. We had paid for a week at the beach and so we went, despite the pain. While there, I was thinking maybe truly resting, I'd get better. But by the time I was home and finally got the MRI, I found out that was not the case. I am glad you are going to see a neurologist. He/She will help! You are right, the pain can make you lose your mind. I had dark, dark thoughts many a time while pacing the house in the middle of the night because I just could not rest. Please hang in there. Juan, I am sorry to hear you have had to have so many surgeries! I am glad my video helped alleviate some of your concerns for your neck surgery. The night I spent in the hospital, I did elevate the top/head of the bed and slept fine. When I got home, I was afraid to lay in bed and tried sleeping in a recliner. That was not the most comfortable. I did end up lying in bed and I was fine. I think we fear things and should trust ourselves and try. So, I slept fine in bed after the second night. My doctor had me wear the collar 24/7 for 9 weeks, but I will admit at about 6 weeks, I started to undo it when I was sitting still watching TV or KZbin videos. Then, I gradually wore it less, such as when I got out of the shower, before dressing for example. At about 9 weeks, I went back to work and I wore it for a few days until I felt comfortable and stopped wearing it one day, and was fine. Good luck and come back and let me know how you are doing!

Yes! As soon as I woke from surgery I was pain free! I have remained so for the past 2 years! I am uncertain about side effects, but because my neck is fused in the location it is fused in, I have a slight limited mobility to turn from side to side, as well as up and down. It does not limit me in any way. I have to look in a mirror sometimes to check my torso, for example to see if I spilled something on myself when I am clutzy, but that is a small concession compared to the pain and the complete loss of mobility I was facing. If you are unwell and need to have the surgery, come on back and let me know how you fair. Take care!

Get well soon love.. thank you for ur video very informative helped me understand somewhat of what I'm facing next.

I am glad the video helped. When I woke up it was like waking up from a nap or sleeping at night. I was perfectly fine and able to move. Hi Donna! I am sorry you had an accident! I do not have troubles swallowing. The day of the surgery, I age regular dinner! I do notice I am not as loud or able to project my voice as much now, but I've also used it less since we were on lockdown and I taught virtually too. There is a slight difference in feeling inside, but honestly it is barely noticeable and does not take away from eating or drinking in any way.

How long will my swallowing be affected? I had it last Friday a week ago. I'm better but my throat has phlegm in it and feels like it's clamping down sometimes especially at night. I have a little anxiety which is making it worse. I am drinking lot's of water. Any suggestions? When will my throat feel normal? My levels were 3-4, and 4-5. They used dura bond on my scar. It is swelled or thick from reaction or stitches underneath which may be pressing on my throat. Was your scar thick or you feel a hard lump along your scar?
@theplanninggirl
@theplanninggirl 2 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey, if you are concerned, talk to your doctor. I do recall feeling like I was having trouble swallowing and there are times when I still do; such as when my head is turned or if I am looking up or down. Holding my head in a neutral, comfortable position helps. I keep myself calm because I do a little check and tell myself yes I can swallow and yes I can breathe. I no longer take a hard multivitamin, but a gummie vitamin as I cannot swallow the Centrums anymore. My scar is hard feeling underneath and I don't like anything to touch it. I am careful with shirt necklines. As I have aged, my neck skin is getting older and my scar also has an indentation at times. It's weird. For the most part it just looks like my neck. If you check my Instagram picture, though, you can see my neck fairly well and it looks normal. I wish you a speedy recovery!

After 3 years, do you get any pain, tingling or numbness in your neck, back, arm, or hand ?
@theplanninggirl
@theplanninggirl 9 ай бұрын
Yes, I do. I am just now getting feeling back in the left hand, and I do get all three: pain, tingling and numbness in my left arm and down along the nerve. Sometimes in my low back from my original injury and my neck aches. But it is a muscle tiredness I think. My back aches too, but that is from the degenerative disc disorder. I hope you are well and don't need to have this surgery. But, if you do, and the doctor recommends it; I'd say do it! My life is way better now than it was when I was in pain. I don't think I could have lived with that pain. I also know by now I would likely have lost my mobility. I still work and "play." I pick up my granddaughter and carry her. Life is good. Take care!

They said I'll be there for about 45 minutes. I'm thinking they go over the basics & tell me what to expect. I'm wondering...will they tell me to take off my nail polish. I get my nails dipped in the powder. I know some surgeries require that because they look at the color of your nails sometimes to gage your oxygen. Do you remember if they told you not to wear nail polish?

I am very cautious about lifting, my posture, etc so I don’t aggravate my neck. Like you I store my stress in my left shoulder area and that is where my pain began then down my arm to my thumb. PT gave me relief and so for the past 4-5 years have been able to function ok. They work millimeter by millimeter. This is way better than fusion which just transfers stress to the next disc. This will be my 6th surgery, you'll be fine. Main thing is everything she was saying insofar as being healthy going in.
