Sometimes I accidentally skip paragraphs or read ahead and end up spoiling things for myself and it’s HORRID. Especially during tense scenes or near the end of a chapter my eyes just flick to the last sentence without any permission from my brain. Positively traitorous.

My dad has this 'The Great Gatsby' copy that he got in the 80s and I borrowed it one day, opened it and an old train ticket from 1985 fell out and it just felt so cool maybe cooler than it actually is but the idea of him reading it in a train in the 80s and the ticket that's just been sitting there all those years was just really cool to me

Awh that's so cool. Also, this comment made me go check two specific books and I found 1. A receipt from a bookshop in an Amsterdam airport where I had a connecting flight to the US, and obv used that receipt as a bookmark. And book 2. Found a train ticket from my London trip. Wholesome moment, thank you.

I learned this from an advisor in grad school who did a lot of writing: If I'm reading a book I might need to reference later in a published paper, I underline or highlight the area and then make my own index in the blank sheets at the end of a book ... i.e., Bronte writing of alcohol or drug abuse, etc. It has been really helpful for going back and finding citations! Those have ended up being some of my most treasured books.

- Not asked, but: i don't keep my books. Once read, they go. I have maybe ten special fiction books that i keep. - Random pieces of paper, bookmarks, but I've also used (unused) toilet paper as a bookmark. Never dogear pages. Never write in books. - Do not multitask unless I am listening to an audiobook (driving, puzzling, and other automatic things) - I will pause books in the middle of a paragraph if I am just too tired or not concentrated, so i can reread it. Don't care that it's not the end of a chapter or even a paragraph - Several books at the same time, usually around 10, max 15, because I am a mood reader, so i can leave books for months without losing interest or losing track of the plot. I love reading a bit from all books during the week and then finishing multiple ones in a weekend or so. - Never read ahead unless the book is overly descriptive. My mom always reads the ending of all books she's about to read, so she's sure she's not wasting her time. I don't get that. She mostly reads thrillers and crime stuff, but she doesn't see it as spoilers? - Used to never break the spine, until recently. I'm getting older and my hand started hurting. I break the spine at key spaces (middle, and quarters, with more if it's a thicc boi).
