Gerald singing about the World Trade Center towers being attacked always gets me. He talked about being on the ferry taking him to NY, where he was working at the time, and watched the towers collapse. He went back home and decided MCR would be born.

Because Gerard is also a writer, you can tell how he writes lyrics in their songs.

If you like when bands throw surprises into songs, you NEED to listen to Mama. Mcr do not make boring songs, a lot of the time you can never guess the next move sonically. That’s what makes them so great, not to mention the members are all peaches ❤

From what I understand is MCR broke up cuz they wanted to take time to hang out with family, do things in life they wanted to do with the money they had and basically wanted to take time enjoy life and do other hobbies instead of spending all the time touring and recording and writing

DAMN! That breakdown! That whole song! MCR passed me by, but holy crap everything I've heard from them has been magic. I need to get more from them. If they're Emo, I guess I'm down with being Emo!

They have a nice library of songs. I went down that rabbit hole a few years ago and I’m glad I did.

Admittedly, I’d shied away from watching MCR reactions from you because I honestly didn’t expect it to be your thing (which is obviOUSLY totally okay, but I feel that unfortunately it usually comes down to the songs folks choose to show reactors and isn’t a fair rep of the band). BUT now that I know you’ll believe us when we say MCR is kinda metal… guess it’s my duty to join the Patreon🤣🤣 Their guitarists have always been elite!

loved this reaction!! that heavy section isn't really out of the ordinary for them though haha, just maybe not in the songs you've listened to. but yeah, i thought it was funny that you said it sounded like they've been doing this for decades, because they technically have (since 2001)!! their first album has more of this kind of sound if you want to check it out sometime.

Appreciate your reaction! Everyone hates on the way the vocals were recorded but I’m glad you delved into how the song was written and appreciated the choices in the performance

I’m not gonna lie as a fan of about a decade I really don’t like the chorus production at all, it’s not just the vocals, but there’s nothing wrong with the way it’s *written* at all… I can def attest to that after seeing it live 4 times😂 But god yeah, when it hits, it hits!!

Great review, im glad you loved it! Just so you know My Chemical Romance are known for their breakdowns! all their albums follow one story, the first album is the heaviest, second is more hard rock, and third (their staple) is most of the time referenced as a rock opera. You should really listen to: Mama - My Chemical Romance I never told you what i do for a living - My Chemical Romance Those two are their best breakdowns in my opinion.

MCR are huge metal fans, you can mainly hear it in their old music but they seem to be going back to their roots again. The lead guitarist and the singer actually reconnected at an Iron Maiden show before starting the band. They broke up because the singer had relapsed into alcoholism and pills from the pressure of keeping the band alive for the sake of the other members (his little brother is in the band). He first quit spontaneously after a show in 2008 but they talked him out of it and he stayed until 2013. He didn't tell all of the other bands members that he was quitting before posting on the internet that the band was done. It was a mess. Thankfully he's doing a lot better now and they stayed friends as they knew he was struggling (he's had issues throughout the duration of the band and almost killed himself in the past).

Gerard was also struggling through an eating disorder throughout their last album cycle and I believe Mikey (his brother) relapsed towards the end as well, it was shattering for fans but I am so glad they chose their kids and their own well-being over tour life and now they’ve lived through to the other side and come back better than ever!

_Great pick, Charles._ You're welcome, David. 🤘 Awesome review, man! It was nice listening to you analyze the chordal progression of the verses. As you mentioned, the chordal progression creates a sense of anticipation that not only keeps the listener engaged but punctuates the chorus and that fantastic breakdown. I agree that the breakdown is the highlight of the track. It works so well because, as you pointed out, the chorus builds up the intensity and drive after the slower tempo verses, and the breakdown takes it to the next level. Although it may have been unexpected at first, it makes complete sense with the way the song is structured. And the execution itself of the breakdown is impressive. Also, I loved how lead singer Gerard Way showcased his range of vocal styles here, including screaming for the breakdown. By the way, when you sat there, really wanting to go back to that breakdown to hear it for a 3rd time, I wanted you to do it! I wouldn't have complained at all! If you feel it, you feel it! And yes, I completely agree with you that that part was totally Metal. Another part that stood out to me was the section that immediately follows the Metal breakdown, where Gerard quickly changes his vocal style from screaming back to singing a long note. That along with the instrumentation was a great transition out of the breakdown. Finally, MCR is heavily influenced by Queen and loves to spread that influence around in their tunes, so I really liked towards the end that Queen-like calm part right with the harmonies before the last short round of heavy that ends the track. Overall, it was an excellent review, and I appreciate your insights into the song. Thanks, David!

My favorite thing about this song is that the band members have said it came about organically while rehearsing for tour that they were having fun again making music together and the song just sort of happened. Fingers crossed there's more music on the way! I was heartbroken when they broke up in 2013, but they absolutely NEEDED to take a step back to deal with substance abuse and mental health issues. I'm so glad to see them back and even more popular than ever thanks to a new generation discovering their music.

I agree, this one is gonna be hard to top. It's my favorite song of all time so far, the way it makes me feel is unmatched. And I say so far because there's a new album coming, hopefully. We, the fans have trust issues at this point. Fun fact, before their "break up" they used to play a breakdown in between songs very similar to this one. And on their latest shows they've been playing that same breakdown but with added vocals, potentially being a new song for the new album. So that should be fun.

I was really nervous about this. MCR is my 2nd favorite band and are so important to me, I didn't want to be let down by something they made. I find a lot of bands I like end up going in directions musically that I just don't enjoy like Slipknot or Motionless in White, or Muse. But this ended up being one of my favorite songs they've ever made. It feels like MCR started out as a very teenager kind of band. They talk about important stuff that any age can get behind but they do also feel very teenage angsty. This song feels like it adopts a more mature form of sadness and angst. It's like MCR's sound grew up and matured as I did. And as my depression and whatnot have worsened over the years and become more serious and less typical teenage problems, it feels like their music has become darker as well and I love it.

Is it really teenage angst if Gerard Way was almost 30 when he wrote a lot of those songs lol

Very musically talented and thematically creative band, but I cannot stand the way their albums are produced & recorded in the studio (especially the guitars, which get buried in a muddy mix). They have a lot of great songs that I really like, but my listening experience is greatly diminished by the lousy audio quality & questionable production choices.
