MCR actually did get blamed for negatively influencing kids. The Daily Mail blamed them for a teenage girl's suicide and said Gerard Way was a cult leader. It was a massive drama. Outside of the dark lyrics the band is very different though. Their live performances are flamboyant and often kind of silly in a camp way. And Gerard Way used to give mental health speeches from the stage. In the early days of the band he noticed fangirls were coming up to him after shows with cuts on their arms, and after that he became kind of notorious for making speeches from the stage about going to therapy and talking about he goes to a therapist and how suicide is bullshit, and the band's unofficial tagline in the early years was "this band will save your life". If you ever see people in the comments of MCR videos saying "this band saved my life", that's where it originates from. It created an extremely loyal fanbase.

They had to break up because Gerard was relapsing into drugs, alcohol and an eating disorder. It was basically break up or die by the end of it
