Sounds like a segmentation fault after a recursion error. Essentially there's a loop that has no end condition so it writes and writes and writes until it tries to write on some thing the operating system has labeled as "no touchy"

CK3: _tries to touch something the OS has_ OS: "No, no, don't touch me there. This is my no no square." CK3: _CTDS and produces gigabytes of error text_

I saw someone on Reddit post a 1.2 terrabyte text file once for a different game, essentially there's probably a mod conflict that causes a looping error to occur which gradually fills up a text file. It's pretty common in that game however most people notice when it gets to a few gigabytes, that guy simply had the hard drive space for an entire terabyte.

i had a ~1.3 TB once aswell ......... i was like wait why the fuck is my 2 TB hard drive full it is separat and has only paradox games, hitman, rimworld and Gothic on it

Yeah I had a 30GB one once because a mod I had had some minor error that had no effect on the game kept happening basically every tick so it filled up the error log. very quickly.

This is why the “every_x” effect in CK3 modding is so dangerous. I was working on a mod that was supposed to run an effect once a year for every_living_character, but didn’t realize it was essentially doing every_living_character = { every_living_character. Which in layman’s terms means it was running a total of every_living_character * every_living_character times. So if there are 30k characters in game then every year it was running 900,000,000 times WHOOPS

Rimworld can do a similar thing when you exit the game with a ton of mods installed. It just hangs there and if you don't nuke the process with task manager it will just keep writing to the log file. I didn't notice one time and suddenly got the "drives full" message from Windows and found a 300gb file waiting for me.

i think my error file was at some point around 300gbs, i was writting my own mod which reduced the size of the playable map to just british isles and iceland, and it was that heavy because the game repeatedly tried calling for events, characters, and provinces that didnt exist on the map, but were present in the game files, which resulted in a huge error log file
@goldenfiberwheat2385 күн бұрын

From what I can tell the actual errors that cause crashes don't show up in the errors file though. I think it only contains non-fatal errors, which are continuously logged while you're playing the game, mostly AI decision errors from the ~30.000 NPCs.
