My sister used a wipes warmer with her cloth wipes. She would roll all the wipes up and line the warmer and then pour her wipes solution over them. They were warm for babies bum and already damp for mama’s easy use. Just what worked for her. Love that you’re cloth diapering!

I think it’s really important to keep the healthy mindset that you have about cloth vs disposable. It’s really difficult if you go into it with an all or nothing mindset, and that can lead to burning out and quitting entirely. Going in knowing that you’ll use disposables sometimes is a good idea, then you don’t feel like you failed when you do. We ended up deciding to use disposables at night, because she just couldn’t make it through the night if she felt wet, no matter how we configured the inserts. And if we traveled and it didn’t work to use cloth, then we didn’t. I LOVE my Thirsties Duo wraps. I started with just the covers and flats, with a few AIO for her to grow into. By the time she was bigger and heading to daycare I also added some pockets to our stash because our daycare provider was willing to cloth diaper and I wanted to make it as easy as possible for her. I found that I really started to like the pocket diapers, especially when it came to poop after solids. There’s less layers and crevices available for it to squish into - so something to keep in mind for that stage! Also, the pockets still have the double gusset, but the AIO do not (if you’re sticking with Thirsties, that is). For wipes, I actually just made about 40 from flannel, and they have worked great. My rule of thumb was to use what matched on the butt - if baby was wearing cloth, I used cloth wipes, if baby was wearing disposable, I used disposable wipes. We didn’t keep a garbage in her room, so I hated carrying used wipes to the garbage, unless they were wrapped up in the dirty diaper. I made my own spray, too, and I credit that for the lack of diaper rash issues! Even though we’re not currently cloth diapering, we still make up the spray and use it now and then to keep any rash issues away. I’m excited to see how your cloth diaper experience unfolds!

I do prefolds, flats, and covers too and I love it. Cloth diapering is so much easier than it's made out to be! I suggest though that you invest in more covers, I almost always change the cover when the insert is soiled because it all gets into the cover as well or makes it damp. I have heard such good things about these Thirsties Duos!

I love this. Even though we are into week 6 with our little one and using our own cloth diaper system, I was really excited to see what you planned on doing. I used disposables for the first 4 weeks or so, we didnt get any new born sized CDs and I also didn't want to overwhelm myself with both laundry and trying to keep a tiny human alive lol. I love that you are giving yourself the grace to use disposables at times. I felt so bad at first but then realized it was really ok and finally allowed that grace. I can't wait to see how the process works for you. The minute we switched from disposables to cloth I knew it was the right choice for us and makes me so incredibly happy.

My son has just turned a year and we have cloth diapered! Couple things I learned: -i LOVED using prefolds and covers for the first 4 months! Moved to pockets ONLY because he grew out of my stash and I got an excellent deal on my pocket diapers. -your baby will probably outgrow absorbancy before they actually outgrow the size of the diaper. -For me sleep takes priority over nightime troubleshooting. We do disposables at night. -flannel thrift store blankets make great cloth wipes -all in ones with microfiber are easily peed through for older babies. Get something you can add absorbancy too. I hate mine. -A pocket system works great for mobile babies. It's gets REAL difficult to fold and pin. -never used a diaper sprayer. Used flushable liners. Wouldn't have it any other way. -i never understood why people hated microfiber so much. Until about 6 months and they were peed through within an hour. -FB marketplace is your friend! People are selling diapers all the time! Go for the ones for moms who bought brand new and didn't end up using! I got $500 worth of diapers for $80! Hardly used at all!
@mirnie5555 жыл бұрын
Agreed about microfibre! It's an awful awful fabric, sheds microscopic pieces of plastic when it washes, loses absorbency over time, squishes out like a sponge, and never smells clean to me. I am so grateful I listened to advide from others and I use only cotton or bamboo flats in my BG pockets. Also, love that you mentioned buying secondhand! So so so many people are selling their diapers for dirt cheap, and yes sometimes they will be worn and used but you get what you pay for (:

I do this same thing and it is not difficult at all! The hardest parts I would say is learning how to fold the diaper on your baby initially (no matter how much you practice on a stuffed animal, you will still be confused when your baby is in front of you hahaha). And then the other difficult part is when your baby starts rolling over and kicking around (maybe like 6-9 months is the hardest), but then after that, in my experience it gets easier. Also though, I bought newborn prefolds and my baby was not very big, only 7 pounds and those never fit. I just use one size ones that fit 10-30 pounds. I love the thirsties covers better than any other covers I've ever bought. They're so much easier.

Awesome stash! I like that you didn’t get caught up in buying diapers - it gets out of control fast! When you do get pocket diapers, just know you can use prefolds as inserts in them as well! We purchased all of our pockets without inserts and the medium prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers fit perfectly inside when they’re all snapped out, so you may not ever need to get prefolds past medium size.
@joyb35455 жыл бұрын
We have a mix of flats (favorite!), prefolds, and pockets. Shes 13lbs and 7 weeks and doesn't yet fit the pockets, but the flats are so nice and easy ( they line dry in less than a day!, important when you don't have a dryer!). She was born at 9lbs and never fit her newborn covers!
@sierrahall87915 жыл бұрын
You can also use the smaller size prefolds to stuff the bigger prefolds when baby gets a bit bigger and you need some more absorbency. :)

That’s what i started with! Then when baby started being more mobile and refuse changes, i started to prefer pockets and aio’s, easier to put on wriggly toddler. Now i have a variety. But mostly prefer pockets (softer, less red marks) and WAHMs (super absorbent and soft minky!). Aio’s are trim and easier to fit so good for on the go and husbands 😆. I do love my prefolds and covers though! Just wish my toddler would be calm during changes 😅

Love love love cloth diapering! Been doing it for over 2 years now! Started with my oldest at 6wks when he fit in one size diapers. I used prefolds and covers for my second baby during the newborn stage. I would recommend having at minimum 24-36 prefolds for a 2 day wash. 36 was really comfortable for us sin e newborns are so so so poopy!! I found that thirsties size 1 did not fit a 7lb newborn at birth. He was about 8-9ish lb before thirsties size 1 fit him well. The thirsties newborn cover fit right at birth. If you are going to be pad folding (which I dont recommend for newborns) you are going to need a lot more "newborn" size covers. Newborn poop is very explosive so if pad folding it's almost guaranteed to get on the cover every time. Id suggest to snappi the prefolds on to baby until they stop pooping so much lol. After using prefolds then led me to try flats. I then fell in love with flats and switched both of my boy's stash over to flats! We have about 24diapers/child and 8covers/child so 50 flats and 16 covers. I wash every 2 days with a 2yr old and a 1 yr old. We like seventh generation diapers and wipes when using disposables. So proud of you for cloth diapering as a first time mama!!

I also use cloth diapers occasionally use cloth diapers as well, I fully intended to use them full time when I was pregnant but we don't have a washer/dryer at our current home so we ended up trying a bunch of different disposables and found that we LOVE hello bello, they are plant derived and are affordable! They come in super cute patters and are really soft and don't feel like paper like most of the disposables do, we have also never experienced leaks and our son sleeps through the night now and the diapers hold up extremely well. When he was a newborn we also tried the honest company and seventh generation and while we really liked both and they worked just as great they just weren't within the budget. The honest company ones also caused some concern to me based on new research that they recently added a plastic to their diapers making it not the fully plant derived as they had previously been made. We also tried a number of wipes and found our top favorites were water wipes and pampers pure, again they were a bit out of budget so we tired the cloud island brand and they are the same quality (just less wet) but really get the job done for a great price! As for cloth diapers we went with the pocket ones and got the Alvababy, they are really affordable and we've never had leaks or rashes, actually if our son gets a rash we have found that the only way to clear it up is to put him in a cloth diaper! I recommend the charcoal bamboo inserts (only for pockets because these shouldnt go against babys bum) because they are way more absorbent than the microfiber but the microfiber worked fine when he was about 3-7 months. I double up the microfiber and the charcoal bamboo now that hes older and they hold up perfectly. I dont recommend getting the inserts with the gussets although they arent much of an issue they just make the diaper more bulky . Personally my son stays on the warmer side to begin with so i know not to bundle him up too much with a cloth diaper on because they keep him extra warm. Hope some of this is helpful, love watching your videos :) Congrats on your baby!! (I also bought way too many extra inserts than I ended up needing so definitely see as you go how many that you'd need if you decided to go the pocket diaper route)

I bought most of my diapers on Facebook used and I have added a few since he was born but that is what I am working with now and I will be saving this stash to use on my second baby. I loved pre-folds when my baby was exclusively breastfeeding but once she started eating solids I hated them because then you have to rinse them. I've heard a lot of people love them though so I hope you to too! Little cheap baby wash cloths also work great as wipes(: Cloth diapering is so easy! P.S. I like Seventh Generation diapers when I have to use disposables but Hello Bello seems pretty okay too.
@mirnie5555 жыл бұрын
I would suggest bulking up your newborn stash a bit more, its pretty accurate for about 4 months plus but I would disagree with the chart that you referenced. For the first three months I changed my son every 2 hours, often he pooped additionally outside of the 'regular' changes. Newborns also have a knack for pooping immediately after you put on a fresh diaper 🙄 so it amounted to 12-16 diapers per day. 16 diapers × 2 is 32, add in about 4-8 diapers for your leeway on wash day (washing and drying diapers takes around 2 hours start to finish, never mind if you forget to switch them over to the dryer right away, plus diaper folding time) and that adds up to 36-40 changes. I would also caution you on the number of size one covers, newborn poo is like... the consistency of thin pudding. It comes out with force and gets everywhere, including all over your cover. You might have more luck than I did with snappi-ing the prefolds around baby rather than trifolding them into the cover (: I would suggest grabbing 2-5 more newborn covers just to give yourself breathing room. It really sucks feeling stressed about not having enough diapers, and it's much more tempting to just run to the store and get disposables (speaking of which, we used Seventh Generation during the first 2 weeks and after when we went out of the house). Best of luck to you! Also- storing your cloth wipes wet in a wipes warmer does work really well! No need for anything fancy, water cleans buns really well ;)

I love cloth diapering! I currently do this for my 2 year old. I did prefolds and flats when he was a newborn but since he has super sensitive skin it would always break him out or give him a rash no matter how quick I would catch it. He isn’t the ordinary since he has eczema and severe food allergies. So I used disposable which had to be a specific type or that broke him out too! Anyways, I use both pocket diapers and flats with covers. I prefer my pocket diapers best. I didn’t think I would prefer them when I was preparing for baby. I didn’t spend a lot. I bought 4 thirsties covers, flour sack towels, gerber prefolds, and I bought about 8-10 pocket diapers with inserts from sun baby. I love the sun baby diapers the most! I spent around $200 max for everything. I also do cloth wipes and love using them, my little man hates cold disposable ones still! I do still use disposable when we are out or if I’m feeling lazy. His dad never could get the hang of cloth diapers but we have saved so much money just by using them. I enjoy not having to worry about going to the store for diapers all the time! So happy for you!

That's too bad! I think a lot of men are freaked out by it, but if they would give it an honest try they might actually like it. My hubby was a cloth convert after seeing the difference in what a disposable blowout is like vs how infrequent and extremely tame an explosive poo is with a cloth diaper. That plus the cost savings, and he is a 100% cloth convert.

Part time cloth diapering is very hard, especially with a wash routine. You need enough diapers in your load to agitate properly. If you part time then there may not be enough every two days which would cause your diapers to sit there. While I think in theory it is cool, it never works. I usually tell people to commit or don't all together. It will just create more issues. Just think- over a period of 2-3 days my 14m old soils 26 diapers. If I cut that in half as a part timer. 13 diapers, in my washer, would not get them clean at all. Good luck!! Hopefully itll work for you.

Best of luck! My husband was sold when he saw the difference between a disposable blowout and a cloth one - one was massive up the back, clothes and bedding ruined, everyone needed a shower, mountain of laundry, the other was a HUGE poop FILLING the cloth diaper but nothing escaped. The few times we have had a little leak out of the leg was because of our old stretched out leg elastics 😅 that plus the money savings, even if you spent $800 on your cloth stash (which is a huge amount but not impossible), you would STILL save money only after one baby. The nice thing about doing it this way (with covers and prefolds/flats) is that you only have to get the size one covers -they fit up to 18 lbs/9 months- and size small and medium prefolds. Then once your baby is edging towards needing a bigger size, you can upgrade and spread out the cost that way. You can also hunt for deals on cloth diaper swap pages, Marketplace, Kijiji etc.. tons of people are selling their new or gently used (or not so gently used) cloth diapers at steal of a deal. I literally just got 21 bumgenius pockets for $50. Yes, they needed some tlc, but they were just over 2 dollars a diaper! They've paid for themselves in 8 uses! Good luck to you and I hope your boyfriend changes his mind! Cloth diapering is fantastic!

I feel like recommending you to get stay dry liners as well.. they help keep their bottom dry and away from the wet insert. I was changing my son’s cloth diapers every three hours and the tip of his penis got raw. Now I change him every two, use stay dry liners and everything is great! I also let him air out for a couple of hours every day. He is 15 months old though. We use smart bottoms AIO diapers and smart bottoms covers and inserts. I wouldn’t have bought covers if I knew how much of a struggle they are to put on now that he is older and doesn’t want to lay down 😆 but we love the AIO. Best of luck with your cloth diapering experience and your childbirth!

Yup! All of it is reusable if you don't totally abuse your diapers. They show wear over time just like clothes that get worn and washed tons (you wash your diapers 2-3 times a week... do the math for 2.5-3.5 years of diapering :) ) elastics wear out over time, but prefolds are pretty darn hardy. Even if they get holes in them they still work to absorb pee!

What are his reasons for being against it? Is it just because he thinks its gross? My husband's biggest issue was with the laundry, so I told him I would always be the one to do it. Still, at 13 months old, I'm still the one who puts the dirty laundry in but now he is usually the one to move the laundry over to the dryer and hang our covers and pockets on the rack. He was 100% against cloth in the beginning but I won him over with showing him the difference between disposable blow outs (tons, messy, constant) and cloth diaper blowouts (at the ABSOLUTE worst, a tiny leak out the leg, but that was maybe 1 in 50 poops), and the tremendous savings for us.
