Similar thing happen to me on the crested Butte 401 trail . Rode the trail the same day I got there . I looked at trail forks . A couple thousand feet of climbing and 17 miles . Piece of cake by my standards . Wondered if I should bring my hydration pack and said no a bottle should be fine . Mistake one . Began the road climb that felt difficult and half way I was really struggling . My water was emptying quickly . I finally made to the single track and thought the climbing was done . Oh no not close and it got steep . By then I was in real pain and as I crested 13000 ft I thought it was all down hill from here . Water was almost gone but I said no problem . Be back in the campsite in a jiffy . Finished the DH and started climbing again and again and again . I reached bonk status . You just don't realize what Alpine elevation can do coming from sea level . I ran out of water and I had to fill-up in a stream which was risky but had. No choice as I was dehydrated . Completed the climb barely functioning and hit the downhill in slow motion as my mind was out of touch . Got back to the tent with the sun had set . Collapsed in my sleeping bag . No dinner as I felt ill and I passed out . I underestimated what high elevation can do to the body that's not use to it . Fortunate I did not really get hurt .

Yuka, you are a rockstar!!! I love that you show the highs and the lows. We all get them. I've crashed and just sat there for awhile contemplating going on as well and it's always harder when riding with someone else. The expectation to keep up puts a little more pressure on ourselves especially when we are physically or mentally wiped out. You are not alone.

Recently spent 2 weeks in colorado (im from sea level) and our experience was very similar. The 401 trail should have been easy but that climb kicked my ass. I also slid out super hard on a green xc trail. The elevation and loose dirt really sneak up on you in pretty much the whole state. I hiked my first 14er there as well and got elevation sickness pretty bad. I felt like I had taken something. My judgement and reasoning skills werent there and I felt like I could barely stand. It would have been a very easy hike at sea level but the elevation made it the hardest thing ive done. I know you've been at elevation more than i have, but once you're below 8k feet for a few days you'll probably realize how weird youve been feeling and why youve been crashing so much. It really messed me up even though I still had a great time in co. Crested butte in particular was unbelievable. Brought my dog who is in great athletic shape and it still kicked his ass too. He kept trying to take a nap on the fire road you crashed on. Needless to say, he got a couple of rest days after that. (Proper precautions were taken before anyone comments. He gets proper rest and lots of food and we only rode a section of the trail)

I get the same way, I once stopped riding for a very long time, like 8 years....worst thing I ever did! I had to work all summer in Washington state, couldn't get motivated to ride in the winter there! Now I might have a week or 2 when I don't ride or feel miserable...that elevations really takes it out of you!!!

Yep!!! We live on Oregon at 359ft above sea level & are vacationing at sea level in Thailand. When we get back my buddies will want to ride our 2500ft peaks and it's barely possible. Having climbed Mt.Fuji twice and no matter what - altitude sickness just hits you. I can just imagine what the Colorado Rockies would do to me - that's why I will leave them to you!!!

As someone who's spent countless hours on both traditional and electric mountain bikes, I can wholeheartedly say that making the switch to an EMTB has transformed my riding experience. The difference it makes on long, challenging climbs is night and day, allowing you to enjoy the journey up as much as the ride down. What's more, the added assistance from the EMTB means you can comfortably wear extra protective gear, like knee pads, without feeling weighed down or restricted. From personal experience, the EMTB not only enhances your endurance but also opens up new trails and possibilities that might have seemed too daunting before. Trust me, it's a game-changer in the world of mountain biking.
