The Brompton is just such a fine ride. I'm still enjoying my S6LD for my commute everyday. It's just under 10 miles each way. And as I live in Germany, there was no way to go without fenders with all the rain. :) And regarding the level of detail, I cannot recommend enough to get the Brompton toolkit. So well designed and contains everything you need to fix your bike on the go.

Hi, I liked this vid, I just got a Brompton today so Im in the club! Expensive OMG but super fun. The ease of using this bike vs my very heavy and cumbersome cruiser. It's just come into my house to the kitchen and I have a 5 level split. I'm older and have carpel tunnel, and it was still no problem, so the lightness and the ease of getting through doors, small spaces, if you have to lift it, all that, can't be beat. It looks pretty cool too, as I have it bc I saw someone whiz by and they looked so carefree and unburdened and I knew the that I had to simplify my life and stop pushing so much weight around. Just ordered new handgrips and a Brooke seat. It'll be super customized when I'm done. No two are alike. So happy with this and can't wait to take it places I wouldn't have contemplated with my other bikes. It's a whole new world!

I really want a Brommy. I have a driving licence but haven't driven since I passed (10 years ago). I just walk, did used to cycle at one point, take public transport. I must have saved thousands by doing this, and stayed healthier (as well as keeping down my carbon footprint). I feel that most people driving are doing it unecessarily - and then such people end up having to go to the gym anyway! This looks like the perfect little commuter bike: I'll need something like this with my new job involving a short train ride. Thanks for the very informative video.

Good video. I have a 2017. It's a six speed for the hills around here. Shift has been a little problematic but I need the gears. Plan to sort out the shift soon though it looks a little finicky to do it.
@effyleven4 жыл бұрын
I am surprised he thinks the gears antiquated. I have the six speed model. I think it's great. Twin matched changers integrated with their respective brake levers control 2 speed derallier and 3 speed wide ratio hub. The small wheels need special gears, and combining hub gears WITH derallier was the really clever way to do it. It works so well, more conventional bikes should do it.
@kentwydell93223 жыл бұрын
I too think that the six speed gear arrangement is great. The hub gear gears up in 3rd so no need for large chainrings or tiny rear sprockets to get a high enough top. Also you can change the hub gear whist stationery. Useful in town. The derailleur bit is almost a freebie. All Bromptons - even the one speed - have a chain tensioner anyway. To get the extra derailleur gear only requires the lever and cable and thingy to knock the pulley wheel one way or another. And an extra sprocket of course.

In the UK we can take Bromptons on almost every bus and train for free. They are also small enough to throw in the back of a car (we call it the boot here). This makes "hybrid" journeys really practicable. A recent trip I made was: bike - train - bike - car - bike - bus - bike

Nice review. I really loved my Brompton. I had the 6 speed with rack and fenders. I got in to electric bikes a few years ago but kept the Brompton for awhile as it was so portable. Finally sold it a few months ago after I bought a light weight folding Ebike. I agree the non electric Tern bikes are low quality garbage compared to a Brompton but the newer electric versions of Tern have more bag and cargo options than Brompton. Really left Brompton in the dust sadly. I kept my Game bag though. Use it for laptop and work supplies. . Very high quality bag. I did not buy the Tern as they are a bit heavy so I bought the Evo Atwater. 42 pounds so still easy to load in to my trunk.

thats funny, I have 2 ebikes myself (1 mtb and 1 cargo bike). ill be doing a video soon on my cargo ebike as I now run a delivery business utilizing bicycles. I was pretty close to buying a Tern GSD but i found one much cheaper that I really liked.

thanks could you tell me what distant you would ride until it would become uncomfortable? 10 12 miles? i wish to buy a small foldable and getting differance results. thanks david envy your set up
@UncleVoodoo5 жыл бұрын
hmmm, thats a difficult one to answer as it might be more subjective than objective. since Ive been riding long distances on mtn bikes for decades now I wouldn't think twice about heading out for a 20 mile or so trip on it but I don't because I have other bikes more suited for that purpose as I live in the mountains. also, when looking at folding bikes there is a balance between fold and ride quality. if the fold and small storage footprint is the main reason for buying, then Brompton is king. if ride quality is more important and fold is secondary, a Birdy or Tern might be a better choice. if buying a Brompton for comfort on longer rides I wouldn't buy the S model, the M, H, or P models would be better for that. mine was purchased specifically for compact fold and short rides.

Enjoyed your video, but disagree with your assessment of Brompton’s drivetrain technology. I have an S6L and find the shifting quite fine and use all the ratios and it even offers some advantages over traditional groupsets. My wife has an M6L and the shifting suits her as well. Its no more antiquated than a conventional deraileur system, but designed to work with some criteria most bikes dont have...an exceptional fold being one of them. Nice Brommie btw...I like the way you’ve accessorized it!
@UncleVoodoo5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, wouldn’t want a derailleur set up on it. i just dont care for what is basically a high/low derailleur for the 3sp hub. An Alfine 7sp seems like a much better option for them to use in this day and age.
@Gogogordy15 жыл бұрын
I understand that the Alfine 7 is too big. So, they compromised? Agree to disagree re the drivetrain perhaps, but we’re both Brompton fans! Can’t argue about that. Enjoy man; it’s a cool ride regardless.
@GrahamAtDesk4 жыл бұрын
I've had 4 Bromptons over the years, each with a different transmission. One of them had a 7 speed SRAM hub in it (the rear triangle had been widened to accommodate it). It was a nice I idea in principle, but the 7 speed hub was a lot heavier than the 3 speed. It didn't work as smoothly either. I'd choose the 6 speed over a bigger hub every time. I'm a fan of hub gears, but my current Brompton is a 2 speed. Where I live now it's relatively flat and the bike is a lot lighter without a hub gear. If I lived somewhere hilly I'd get a 6 speed, without question. I'll never look at putting a heavier hub in a folding bike again. There are no significant benefits and the weight is a downside for me.
@kentwydell93223 жыл бұрын
@@UncleVoodoo The derailleur utilises the chain tensioner which is there on all Bromptons The ratios on the Brompton derailleur are close together and chosen to split the difference between changes on the 3 speed hub gear and add an extra top and an extra bottom. The ratios on the hub gear are extra wide I think. Wider than the usual AW three speed.
@tonyofarrell73184 жыл бұрын
It looks good ,but the small wheels would worry me from a safety point of view ,have you ever hit a pothole?
@thecollector52434 жыл бұрын
I don't think potholes are really a problem for well pumped up wheels. But power transmission is always better with bigger wheels. I have a Tern with 20" - it also does make for a more stable ride. The Brompton indeed folds smaller with its 16"ers. But my Tern still folds small enough for my requirements and with 11kg I can carry it one-handed. I defenitely prefer the bigger wheels.
