How many mechanics are too many? Where do the lines blur between good and bad? Let's talk about one of the most complex, most complicated and by far one of the most interesting little RPGs I've ever touched as we tackle Digimon World (1999) for the PlayStation.
Very special thanks to my friend Nick The Game Apologist for drawing the thumbnail art!

Digimon World was easily one of the best games I ever played in my life, not even just my childhood. I got it on my 8th birthday and even through confusion, struggles, and just plain being lost, I played the shit out of this game. I learned new words by reading the dialogue, I discovered new Digimon I never knew before, I had so much fun getting lost in this little world. I know it's tough, I actually didn't entirely finish it until years later, but this was in the days before the internet, so each new Digimon I digivolved into, each rng event I triggered, each branch of evolution, was all a surprise and a learning process. This is part of what's so great about this game though, the unknown and the figuring out on your own as opposed to reading a guide and just copying their steps to things. I know it can take longer this way but honestly, it was how the game was meant to be played. Otherwise you could easily run through the game and get 100% prosperity rating in like... 10-15 hours. The depth and the simplicity of the game is what makes it so great. At the core, just training and doing what your Digimon asks of you, you can hit Ultimate levels and be able to get through the storyline slowly but surely. In depth though, you can strategize and save up items or go after certain Digimon or aim for certain builds, etc. The variety of Digimon, the achievements, the collectibles, the minigames - there's so much you can do besides just the main plot. There were some minor glitches in the original build, some things weren't perfectly translated, and ofcourse there are things that could be improved upon, but the base game was a great starting point. The reason why Digimon plummeted in popularity while things like Pokemon increased and otherwise stayed popular, was because Digimon changed their formula too much from each iteration to the next while Pokemon and the like stayed 90% the same, and made additions or edits to what already worked. Had Digimon World 1 been expanded upon, had the story ultimately continued, had the concept played the same, and had the issues been fixed, it could have been a real contender for the Pokemon franchise. This game stands out as such a unique experience because it was so great, despite the difficulty curve and the sheer amount of information there is to take in. Nurturing your Digimon is so specific because this allows there to be the amount of Digimon there were in the game, makes you have to save up items to skip certain amounts of training, makes you go after Digimon that make your training and raising easier or more efficient, even if the amount is only a little. Fishing mini games, Curling mini games, puzzles, riddles, type matchups, exploration, arena, multiplayer arena.... so many things to do. Seeing your City develop is a magical feeling that not all games can provide, even games that are based on farming and village forming, because this one builds from the ground up based on where you go and what you do, that's the only say you have in this process as compared to collecting materials and placing them as you like. The battle system isn't turn based or something you fully dictate, it's an auto play of sorts based on how you raised and trained your Digimon. The next games went turn based, gave you more than one Digimon, over simplified things to the point of being boring or way too easy - the future titles ruined this Digimon, or at least became entirely separate entities of their own by making so many dam changes. I miss games like this, new games never take this much risk or go this deep anymore. Most games are bland generic crap nowadays and it sucks because games like this had so much more depth, with so little capability of consoles and memory at the time, more than 20 years ago. I hoped for Digimon Survive to be a game like this, but that ended up being a turn based light novel game instead, feels like a Digimon World game like this will never return lol, RIP.

@kimeroxsawata6829 2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to meet the stats requirements to evolve, when checking for evolution you only need to meet 3 requirements out of 4 (stat/care mistakes/weight/special requirement). So for example if you want to evolve greymon to metalgreymon you can do that by only having 0 care mistakes, weight between 60 and 70 and either fighting 30 battles or having max discipline. After learning this mechanic the game will feel a lot less grindy since evolving to ultimate will be a lot easier and thanks to the stats bonus from evolving you will be ready to progress without too much grinding. Also, getting tired (not sleepy) from training is not a care mistake but makes the digimon weaker in battle, easier to get sick and many other debuffs.

Aah, Digimon World 1. This was the first ever game I've beaten to the absolute max, with all the Medals (Minus Penguinmon's Curling Challenge, because that Medal was total bullshit). This also drove me to have MegaSeadramon as my Mascot Digimon of choice, because I always saw him as this Legendary Badass Sea Dragon that shoots Lightning and Ice, and at that time, I thought that that was the coolest thing possible. To this day, MegaSeadrmon is still one of my top 5 most favourites. He's like an old friend to me; and we go waaaay, way back in our legacy days. I was 7 years old, the first time I've gotten him, and he's been my old-time partner in Digimon ever since. I even gave him a name: Summer. (because I got him on that season) Now I'm saving up for a Nintendo Switch because Digimon World: Next Order is coming over on February 2023.; and you beat that I wanna see if I can beat with Summer being a MetalSeadramon.

This is my favorite game!! Fun fact I learned a long time ago: the Anime was meant to promote the game!! Once they realized the anime was popular on its own, they changed it--thats when they defeated Devimon and moved from File Island to Server Continent. It was meant to be a short anime of only a few episodes too (from what I heard, I'm not sure if thats true) Anyway, I love this vid and thank you for this. Its a beautiful video and just super fun.
@jameskassal4777
@jameskassal4777 Жыл бұрын
That’s not true, the anime was meant to be shorter but they managed to get a full year and not just a season, so the story was expanded. The anime was never meant to promote Digimon World, if it was why would everything be so different? From the evolution, to the characters, to the villains and themes. It is its own world, meant to broaden the scope of Digimon and appeal to more children. That’s why you have Digivices and Crests, not V-Pets. Its a similar case to the serialized manga “V-Tamer”, which promotes V-Pets but uses Taichi. Maybe you got it confused with that?

Every evolution was written down, we didn't know the mechanics and it was just an overall amazing experience. We still talk about this game every once in a while, he even shared our experiences on my wedding day. I still believe it is THE best Digimon game ever made. Never got a copy of my own and never touched it again but I liked it during those few days. Feels good to see it again and maybe I'll give it another go one of these days

I played this game a bunch as a kid and never got anywhere. Never even figured out how to get an Ultimate. I came back like, late last year with a guide and finally beat it and I gotta say, despite how obtuse and complex the machanics can be, this is still one of my favourite games of all time

Just wanted to say real quick; This video is picking up so much faster than most things I upload and man, thank you all so much for giving what I put together here a look. A few attentative people have posted corrections for mistakes I made and I'll do my best to pin (favorite/heart/whatever) the most helpful ones, cause despite my best efforts, I did get some stuff wrong in this analysis or even missed a couple things. That said, I really appreciate anyone helping add to the conversation and bearing with me as while I did grow up loving the Digimon franchise, I did approach this game as a newcomer and clearly missed a few things in this beast of a game lol Thanks again, everyone! See You Next Mission!

I think the mechanics being so hidden adds to the games charm more than you might give it credit for. Darksouls tapped into that same feeling. A thread of mystery that you slowly unravel, learn and eventually master like some kind of pet based Sherlock Holmes. It definatly does dip it's toe into the "TOO obtuse" pool at times though.

Agreed, when I played this game at 6 or 7 years old it was beyond ridiculously difficult, but was super cool when I got a digimon that was on fire one time - then he died and I didn't know what I did right to get him and never saw him again. RIP old friend, gone but not forgotten

Honestly, I'm against any games having their main mechanics SO hidden, the only realistic to know about then for the average player, is through guides. I love both this game and souls games, but how insanely obtuse they can be is not something I love about them.

I've been playing this game since 1999 and replayed it here and there almost on a yearly basis. What I REALLY appreciate about this game is the environment. They look ALIVE and makes it as if you're in a real adventure island. From the calm Native Forest, the guitar strum of Gear Savanna with ShimaUnimon's hoofs clapping, or the creepy Grey Lord's Mansion. All are well made! Unlike e.g. Cyber Sleuth which most of its maps are just the same corridor-style stuff and looks very bland.

This was a great video! I'm glad the algorithm sent me here, lol. You nailed it when you said that this game challenges what you consider a good or a bad game - I feel the exact same. This game, on many technical fronts would be considered a bad game, but after you play it knowing what to expect, it's very hard to call it that. This is one of the most "art" games in my opinion; it feels like it was done with a lot of love and care, and the people behind it did what they thought would be the best for the game, regardless of the results. Especially after playing more recent games (the latest Pokémon games come to mind), this feels like a very passionate game.

While rewatching the digimon anime this year for the 6th time I finally put two and two and realized File city in that anime is almost the exact same as the one in the series. They sare a lot of the same places and geography but they made their own thing with the anime. Gear Savannah, Overdell and the canyon are all mentioned. It was pretty cool to see the parallels and how the game inspired a lot about the anime that also got inspired by a V-pet. Still to this day my #1 Favorite game, I have no idea how I figured out the game as a kid but that knowledge still accompanies me.

My relationship with this game is so complicated. It has so much charm and feels good to get an Ultimate but it's so punishing if you don't know what to do and grindy due to the age mechanic. I feel like I ultimately still love this game but it's so frustrating. I used the same evolution tool you mentioned and it has helped so I'd also recommend guide scumming for evolution, especially as most of us have done our time as kids lmao

One interesting thing I just realized, I think Machinedramon might have been the first ever Mega level Digimon. For the original V-Pets, Ultimate was the final level of evolution. Eventually the anime introduced VenomMyotismon as a level beyond the "fully evolved" Ultimate stage. Then WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon rose up to fight him. But Digimon World came first, and Machinedramon is a Mega level Digimon.

I loved playing this game so much as a child and went back to playing it like 5 years ago or so when I finally knew more about the game and the mechanics. As a kid I didn't really put much thought into it, just going arround fighting digimon, training my partner and all that. Well, it only took me *checks date* about a year to get around actually watching the video... First of all, great video and thanks for the shoutout. I'm always glad when my work is actually useful for people. :D I think part of what makes the game special is the vibe of File City. It just feels like a place where one simply belongs to, where one can feel at home. It's a rare quality in games and one I absolutely adore whenever I encounter it-and Digimon World was the first one where I did. Even though its sequels improved on many of the issues this game has, none have quite managed to capture the same vibe, which is part of the reason why it's still so popular among fans of the series. That being said, I absolutely recommend playing Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode. It's, gameplay wise, the best Digimon World experience so far. The only of my guides you have to follow for it is the one for installing the translation patch. ;) Another interesting aspect of this game is the speedrun. It's actually what got me back into the game and a major reason for all the research I did on this game. It shows off quite a few of the discoveries the community has made over the years of how this game works. Oh, and did I mention there is a randomizer? Also, some timestamped notes I made while watching the video: 12:34 Using Bonus Try can absolutely be worth it, but only under two conditions: 1. You're good at it 2. You're lucky The problem is, the minigame is rigged and most of the time you can't actually win, but assuming perfect timing you'd still get more stats from it overall. 28:45 There is actually a mechanic where Digimon with low brains and discipline just stares holes into the cloud for a few seconds sometimes. It's called "senile" state in the original game files. It's not what happens in the clip, though. That looks like the AI is actually having some problems... 38:37 It's actually 3072 bits exactly (it makes sense when you think in binary, I promise). I've seen my fair share of unlucky people fail this minigame at like 3070 bit... 44:35 That's an interesting one I never thought about before. The progress of File City is implemented by having you teleport to different maps with different IDs based on your current progress. So if you progress to change the map all the poop on it should disappear. 47:13 B, A and S cups do. But it's random, they have a chance of 10%, 20% and 30% respectively. 57:55 Funnily enough, only Devimon, MetalGreymon and Machinedramon are mandatory encounters. The rest can be skipped with some precise movement.

Really glad you gave it a watch! I always knew with a video project this big, there'd be some stuff I would miss or get wrong, but I think that's ok as long as the community can come together and help educate each other and if I can inspire a bit of that discussion, mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned And of course, excellent work yourself!
