The radicalism of the 1960s did not fall from the sky-it was built by the uncommon bravery of common people. One of those people was Staughton Lynd, a professor who accompanied movements for justice as a scholar, lawyer, and activist throughout his life. A conscientious objector to the Korean War, Staughton went on to join the Civil Rights Movement and oppose the Vietnam War through his scholarship and his actions. He passed away in Nov. 2022 just days before his 93rd birthday. A collection of his writings and speeches, My Country Is the World, was recently published by Haymarket Books. Activist, author, and lawyer Alice Lynd joins The Chris Hedges Report to remember her late husband alongside Luke Stewart, editor of My Country Is the World.
Alice Lynd was a draft counselor and trainer of draft counselors during the Vietnam War. In 1968, she published We Won’t Go: Personal Accounts of War Objectors. She later became first a paralegal and then a lawyer. After retirement from practicing labor law in the wake of plant shutdowns, she became an advocate for prisoners sentenced to death and/or held for years in solitary confinement at Ohio’s supermaximum security prison.
Luke Stewart is a historian focusing on the antiwar movements during the Vietnam War and the global war on terror. He has co-edited Let Them Stay: U.S. War Resisters in Canada, 2004-2016. He currently lives in Nantes, France.

Herein lies the crux of the matter: technology is amazing & we need it BUT how in the hell did we as a people, community allow ourselves to rely & become dependent on just 1 form of communications with 5G internet access being our only forum for communicating. Landlines and at least public free phone booths should have stayed in place. To depend on AI & the internet is to give the government & corporations control of our voice and ability to act collectively. When Hedges warned us decades ago the majority of our cities & communities did not take action.

Good bit of Peace Movement history sad to say I had forgotten about Staunton Lynds contributions. He was one of those older generation leaders and stalwarts whose integrity had not been compromised. He should be up there in the first place ranks with C. Wright Mills, Michael Harrington, Norman Thomas, A. Philip Randolph, A.J. Muste, James Baldwin, Bayard Rustin, MLK, the Reuther brothers, Saul Alinsky.

There are many that deserve to be in that honor role Berrigans certainly should be but obviously the list is not meant to be exhaustive just a reminder that their have some great old school lefties.

Hell yeah. This war in Ukraine is so similar to Vietnam. The only difference is that instead of Americans, only Ukrainians die, and there is no USSR, so US cannot blame it on Communism. So they blame it on "Evil Russians", effectively standing on the same position as Nazis in Ukraine. These Nazis are so similar to Military Junta in Saigon... And "free people of Donetsk" remind me of Viet Kong which just want to live in their own land, without Americans putting them under Nazi rule.

Great to see Chris Hedges have an episode of the American treasure Staughton Lynd featured by Alice Lynd. Staughton Lynd is essential, I have both his Intellectual Origins of American Radicalism as well as the book Wobblies & Zapatistas that he co-wrote with Andrej Brubacic on one of my bookshelves.

Chris Hedges.. a much loved, respected and knowledgeable man of God! Everything that you have written over the years has come to life. I pray we unite NOW. So tired of being black balled. Lost family in the process yet it appears more are waking up!

I live in Florida with all the racists. I think it’s getting worse. They hate black, brown, and white liberals. I’m off-white (parents from Egypt). Neighbors anonymously call the police on me saying I’m homeless several times. But they are very nice to each other. They hide behind big flags, big trucks, and country music. (All which I like). Their mindset is the key to our future. As for me, I’m leaving. 2 years is enough. Sad but hopeful.

Thomas Paine expressed this sentiment most profoundly in the 18th century when he said : My country is the World , Ny religion , to do Good , And all humankind are my Kin and Brethren ! If only we could have our fellow human beings embrace , internalize, and apply this Simple yet profound philosophy ! Perhaps , we will eventually but it may take some time !

The same deceitful manipulative lies of the Vietnam War is also being exploited in the Ukrainian conflict. The US, G-7, EU are all complicit in this unfolded tragedy exploiting Ukrainian people. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Something needs to be said. Blacks discriminate jews, Asian American, and Hispanics For many years. Worst of all interracial discrimination within black community occurs all the times and there is no way to prevent it. Blacks can hold against your blackness if you are from different states and countries. Black people from Jamaica Trinidad and Haiti are constantly discriminated by black American. Chris hedges needs to more this fact rather than claim that blacks are the most innocent ethnicity in this world

To add: What is going on in Ohio! How & why did The Christian & Missionary Alliance Churches of America MOVE their National/International Headquarters from Colorado Springs,Colorado to Columbus ( Reynoldsburg), Ohio a few years ago in 2020 with them planting branch churches in selected counties across the State of Ohio. The history of The Religious Right ( James Dobson), Betsy Devos ( Erik Prince & Blackwater), The Koch Brothers, George W. Bush....all tied to 9/11. The Koch Brothers want to rewrite the constitution to make cyborg beings & Transhumanist citizens of the United States....is this reason? With the mass church planting mass immigration & immigrants are filling the churches. All of this in the midst of Covic!

"My Country is the World ". This is a clear demonstration of the insanity we face today. Equality is a myth.. people are not all the same, not all systems, religions, traditions, attitudes, lifestyles or opinions are worthy of respect or acceptance. Decadence, corruption and evil are realities that must be recognized and purged from society... No... I am not talking about any superstitious, spooks in the sky nonsense.. just the actions of flesh and blood human beings. Consider this fact.. Those who will not use the brains and skills they have are no better off than those who have none. They are by their own choice subject to the will and control of those who would be their masters. Your life. Your future. Your choice.

The new generations of our so-called Christian nation easily grasp the "do unto others" teaching by Kindergarten (and that all life is equally precious). It takes an additional 12-16 years to learn the hundreds of rationale and workarounds (based on skin color, class, status, etc.) to not apply the word evenly.
