Common spots of coolant leak. -front and rear of thermostat housing (beneath the expansion pipe directly behind turbo) where piping enters housing. Those orings fail over time. -The main and secondary coolant pipe connections on the left side of the engine just above the left top engine mount. Those orings fail over time. Water pump is super simple to do once you remove that motor mount. That motor is awesome as long as you keep the coolant system up.

Congrats! I know that you were disappointed when the first attempt at buying a 9-4 fell through! I just got done fixing a 9-3 B284 that the previous owner said overheated. It also had obvious external coolant leaks, but ran perfectly once full of coolant., and all the leaks were fixed. However, as I took it for a test drive it burned through coolant pretty quick, confirming that it was a head gasket even though compression and coolant pressure check was fine. Long story short I tore it all down and replaced the front head gasket, thermostat, upgraded to DO88 hoses, intercooler, radiator, new timing chains, upgraded to billet compressor. Got the timing chain off by one tooth during reassembly so I had to do that a second time and now it runs just fine- almost! I think there is a grounding issue and it can't find the CIM/ECU until I clear the codes with the Tech 2. I have to look into that, but drives just fine now! If you are lucky you can just fix the external coolant leaks- when they overheat the 13 year old gaskets which are already old get brittle and leak. I had leaks on the coolant port above the water pump so I replaced all the o-rings and water pump. You already have experience replacing engines, so if its more than fixing coolant leaks maybe that's the best way to go? You'll have peace of mind that it hasn't been damaged by overheating. Best of luck-

Nice find, have fun with it. I have recently picked up an NG 9-5 Aero, just started doing the timing chains on it. Talk about a lot of work, may be in your future too as these engines are notorious to fail.

Someone in Newburyport, MA had one of these (black too) in 2018. It was in excellent cosmetic condition, Not sure where it went. Probably into a crusher. Alas. Like many out there, I have lusted for one of these SUVs. To accompany my 2010 9-3 Aero (with the nifty and rare highest-end wheels) and about 45k miles.

Hey, been looking for an 9-4x Aero for a while. But need help/guidance where on the internet to look! Where did you buy your own? Have no experience of buying cars in America. Would like to buy one and take home to Sweden!

If you need any parts for your car and have difficulty getting them in the US, let me know. I can give you the contact details of a friend directly in Sweden who often has many different parts for all models, very often they are completely new. A year ago I bought a 9-5 Aero from 2010, as is usually the case, there are careless people who scratch the buttons with their claws, which is most often the reason for the "rubber paint" wearing off. Basically, you can't buy just the buttons for the main panel, but I managed to get a new, unused central panel from 9-4, the buttons fit 9-5, I replaced the worn out ones and everything looks like new. I still have the central panel for the 9-4. Congratulations on your purchase, when I made the purchase I was hesitating between 9-4 and 9-5. My only regret is that I can't have both...yet. ;)

Can your mate find me a smoked grey rear decor panel for a 1991 9000 CD? That would be a doozy...
