My dad ran up hundreds of thousands in gambling debt (credit cards), and asked me to extend my mortgage to help him. He then asked me to pay a loan repayment monthly for him (he got his wife’s mother to extend her mortgage) - I said no. That was 17 years ago - haven’t seen or heard from him since

Be a good son first and foremost and check on your dad's health. Depending on the dad's age, look at dementia and/or scammers. My mom started asking me for money in her 70s, and she was constantly being contacted by scammer that she believed whole heartedly because she had the beginnings of dementia.

Look, everyone craps on banks but they are the best assessors of risk when it comes to loaning money. Tell him to go to a bank. If they won't give him a loan there's a reason. My brother used to ask me for money and I told him go to the bank. He said they won't lend him anymore money. I said neither will I.

Simple rule. If a bank (who will almost always put you in more debt than you can handle) won’t lend him money, you better not do it either. In the first place it's completely messed up to ask your child to take out a loan for you because it implies that the bank won't give them the money, but moreover if you attempt to guilt trip them into doing it that basically confirms you're a bad parent.
