Be a good son first and foremost and check on your dad's health. Depending on the dad's age, look at dementia and/or scammers. My mom started asking me for money in her 70s, and she was constantly being contacted by scammer that she believed whole heartedly because she had the beginnings of dementia.

Look, everyone craps on banks but they are the best assessors of risk when it comes to loaning money. Tell him to go to a bank. If they won't give him a loan there's a reason.
