I love Serpentine Gen I have the color in many of my pallets; I call this color my “dirty green”. I use it frequently in botanical paintings. Tip: I add a little honey to all of my DS Primatek paints when pouring a pan and this really helps the paint rewet easier. I pour the paint into the pan, dip a toothpick into the honey and stir into the paint.

After watching this video, everything made sense to me now! All the names make complete sense to why the colors are so expensive and are considered series 4. My father is a geologist and only now (after hundreds of years, haha!) I finally noticed that the pigments are ACTUAL crushed gems. That's why they are so expensive. I can't believe it took me this long to realize that! LOL

seperntine and piemontite are two of my favorite colors. the more water you mix them with the more they will granulate/separate. the serpentine precipitates out that brown, very cool. sodalite is also amazing, and i find jadeite much nicer than viridian. all great colors indeed.
@everartokelli4 жыл бұрын
FYI, Piemontite, Sodalite and Serpentine are all available as Daniel Smith watercolor sticks, which are more affordable ($8.74 USD in the US) and they rewet beautifully. I use Piemontite frequently, love the separation which makes very natural landscapes and urban sketching building, it's similar to Indian Red but more transparent. I recently got the Sodalite stick, it's gorgeous and I'm still learning how to add it to my work.
@zara4leafclover4 жыл бұрын
@Helen Gillis Some sticks are softer than others. In general, they're firm but not overly so, I'm able to cut them and put the piece in a half-pan no problem. Reweting them is very easy and end up working just like normal half-pan.
@everartokelli4 жыл бұрын
@Helen Gillis Sketch-a-doodle is correct, they're really like pans, maybe a bit softer. The DS sticks are softer than the Winsor & Newton sticks which pretty hard. I just cut them down and put them in full pans, haven't tried to use them like watercolor crayons yet. There are a least a few YT videos about the sticks.

@Helen Gillis Not that i've noticed, but I don't live in a very hot or humid climate. You can buy empty DS storage boxes made for them for about $4 USD, but I happened to have a little plastic box that was the right size for the 5 sticks I own.

Piemontite and sodalite are some of the BEST mixing colors I've found. Their textures and hues mix and granulate beautifully with pretty much any color Jadeite is one of the few greens I use as it is the best mixing green I've found. Kyanite and amethyst I use less often but the pay are amazing for adding interest to grays and shadows.

The Garnet is actually quite amazing with a bit more water. It makes a pink-brown wash that looks like Utah desert sand. I can mix a similar colour but the wash never dried as even as the Garnet.

Most of these primatek colors are the best ones. Amethyst, Piemontite and Jadeite are all in the primatek set and they're gorgeous. Sodalite is great in moody mixes since it granulates. Piemontite is great in landscapes and so is Jadeite, and they're strong but do mix well with others. Heads up that Amethyst varies tube to tube, mine is sparkly like Kyanite some are less. Also, my Sodalite rewets perfectly fine, I find that the primateks in general vary tube to tube more than normal pigment colors.
@mtordy4 жыл бұрын
I just started getting back into watercolors so I grabbed a limited palette of colors but my one "splurge" was a 5ml tube of sodalite. I've always liked the look of it as a rock. I haven't had an extensive opportunity to use it but my go to black is now sodalite and burnt umber. When I'm out sketching during the summer, Barn swallows are a common subject matter of mine and sodalite is a good match to their main feather color, which really helps for capturing them quickly.

@CufflinksAndChuckles4 жыл бұрын
These are wonderful minerals! When you plan to purchase these, note that knowing color theory isn't good enough. You also have to learn about how each of these minerals react to other pigments and minerals. For instance, Serpentine Genuine didn't react the way you'd think it would if you combine it with certain reds, yellows, and blues. It's a bit of a learning curve, but it's worth it because they offer you more techniques that regular transparent watercolor palette is capable. The only downsides are the steep learning curve we talked about and the fact that these colors are still pretty expensive.

I have Putpurite, Sodalite, Blue Apatite, Mayan Blue Genuine, Jadeite, Green Apatite, Serpentine and Piemontite on my DS studio palette of 48 colors. They are frequently used and I don't want to live without any of them! I can barely say which one I love most! However I know that Serpentine, Green Apatite, Purpurite and Piemontite are used most. I also own a lot of other Primatek, such as Amethyst, both Fuchsite, Bronzite, Kyanite and such, but they are on a specialised Primatek palette. For amethyst I can only recommend to NOT pour it in a pan! Mine dried almost rock hard, it lost around 95% of its tinting strenght, no comparison to Amethyst out of the tube! All the other Primatek I own, with exception of Lapis Lazuli, I have no problem rewetting any of them. Edit: I just saw that you have problems with your Sodalite poured in a pan. Weird, mine works perfectly, I didn't notice any loss of color strength 🤔

Fyi Blue Apatite fluoresces under uv light, which is really interesting as the lightfast rating is also good. Opera Pink also fluoresces for example; but this is due to the fluorescent dye used which is unfortunately fugitive. DS Manganese Blue Hue ( series 1) also fluoresces but with good lightfastness.

Amethyst is beautiful to paint with, but it dulls and loses color until it is basically a sparkly dark gray. Not what I'd consider lightfast at all.

ultramarine genuine is quite romantic, yet the mineral pigment is too expensive yet too weak in the DS tubes. I can get mineral ultramarine where I live much cheaper and better and even to choose many shades varieties made by different grinding process.
