My Dave Murray tone tutorial

Hi everyone. Here's a tutorial to get Dave Murray's tone.
I'm French and I did the best I can to speak in a correct English. Please don't blame me on my accent ^^ Moreover I'm sick as hell, thanks to the cold humid French winter.
Gear :
Marshall JMP-1
2Marshall JFX-1
Marshall 9200
Korgt DTR-1
Samson Powerbrite Pro 10
Fender Stratocaster Classic Floyd Rose with Seymour Duncan Hot Rail on the bridge.
I use both sides of the 9200 but LED's on the right are dead. Don't know why...

I used the speakers emulator of the Marshall JMP-1 straight into my M-Audio Pre MK II. That's about it. I need to get one of these SM-57s. Everybody tells me they are great microphones. Thank you for you comment about my cover of The Prisoner. I'm glad you like it.

Thank you :-D ! It's about 550 ms delay and 50% feedback. And the reverb is 90% decay. There are some little changes between patches yes. Especially between Dave's and Adrian smith's tones. Dave uses a longer delay than Adrian.

For the clean tone I use Chorus, Reverb and Delay. For my Rhythmic distortion patch I use a little bit of chorus and reverb. For my lead tone I use Chorus, Reverb and Delay

The JFX-1 and the JMP-1 are running through the Marshall 9200 and then to the 1960b cab. Thank you. Up the Irons !

On the JFX-1 : Chorus, Delay, Reverb mode. Chorus: mode 2 Depth: 88 300€ for the JMP-1 I bought my JFX's only for 150€ each but it is much expensive usually. Like 500€ on Ebay. And about 500€ to 600€ for the 9200.

thank you very much. Yes, the JMP-1 is the key to Dave Murray's tone. It has this very nice smooth tone with a lot of sustain. It's hard to get that tone without a JMP-1.

Actually it's a "mode" on the JFX-1. There's no speed. The depth is like 99%. But it doesn't work like a pedal. I would say that it's just an ambient chorus. It gives you the sound of a light chorus without waves in the sound. Hope it helps.

Hey man, I'm just getting back into playing again after 10 yrs of not playing. I'm getting my gear back up and would kill to be able to get this sound. Would you mind explaining to me how your using the JFX-1? I saw one of your comments had the setting for chorus. Which channel and the settings for reverb and delay. I've wanted to be able to have the Dave Murray slow lead tone since hearing Killers the first time at 12 yrs old, back in '91. Thanks Man and Love your Vid!

I don't really know. I used to have a Marshall 8008 and now the 9200, I didn't try that much power amps so I can't tell you why it is different than an other one. I can tell you that it is a very powerfull amp. Vintage/Modern switches are cool, you can really hear a big difference. I like to play with the modern switch ON. It gives you a little more that the vintage do not have. Presence controls are also very good. It really change the tone when you turn the nobs. Hope is what you expected. :-)

It's a DW drums stickers which I reversed the W to make a M. I've found it on Ebay for a cheap price from a Canadian company.

Super vidéo, je suis moi aussi dans le délire de Monseigneur Murray :p Je n'arrive vraiment pas a obtenir des effets satisfaisant (j'ai un boss gt8 avec le jmp1 dans la boucle le tout dans un 50/50 el34) ça me mine un brin lol! Par contre je me pose vraiment une question: le son live de Maiden england (le vieux) je me demandais ce qui rendais le son de Davey si particulier... De l'Univibe ? Je sais pas, ça fait un moment que je me questionne.... Un avis? ^^

Salut ! Merci pour ton commentaire. C'est curieux que tu aies du mal à t'approcher du son de Dave Murray avec ton materiel. Normalement avec un les réglages du JMP-1 que je donne et un bon Chorus/Delay/Reverb, tu peux bien t'en sortir. Sinon pour le son du live du Maiden England c'est simple, Dave utilisait des ampli Gallien Krueger 2100 SEL qui ont un son assez particulier.

hey buddy, just a quick question... how do you deal to play in a low volume? i mean, if you use a low 9200 gain or something ele.... and do you plug the JFX into the FX loop? thank you!

my 9200 is on 10 and I just reduce the volume of the jmp-1. And yes I plug my jfx-1 in the loop of the imp-1. You're welcome mate. I hope it helps.

Hi, like the tutorial, good work. What other effect have you put into the lead settings? You say gain 20 bass/mid 6, treb 4 and presence 2 but there sounds like something else is going on to give it that rich sound. I don't have your rig and currently using a BOSS GT8 multi effects pedal. Also, what are the settings out of? Gain 20 out of 100? Thanks again.

The JMP-1 doesn't have any effects. Only 2 Types of clean sounds and 2 types of Overdrive sounds.

You seems to know a lot. I have gotten really close to Dave's tone with my pedalboard (POD HD500) but I still feel something is missing (that Smoothness)... I think it could be that Marshall JMP1, but I'm not sure how it works. If I get one, should I just keep my pedalboard's presets and run them through the M-JMP1 to the amp, or will it be necesary to build new presets? PD: You've done a great job, and have awsome skill. Do you take this out on the road a few times a week .. it is an awesome system .. I have the earlier Marshall 9000 pre amp and Power amp in the model before this stuff where they made them gold.. and the big four twelve speaker cabinet .. but after getting home from playing 2 shows in the last 3 days in two US states . .and have to go work tomorrow and the rest of the week ( typical week for me ) .. it is too much gear to carry around .. but sounds amazing .. I play with the www.screamineagleband.com ... Modern Southern Rock

Hey man... i've got the 9200, but it's sounding strange, like there is a wind storm going on..in both channels (i use just one each time). After turn on, wait some minutes, and turn the standby off, i can play normal for almost 3 minutes, then the "wind storm" starts..then i have to turn on the standby and after like 5 minutes it gets normal.. mas sometimes the noise comes back... do you have any idea what it might be? thanks

Hi ! Dave and Adrian use their JCM2000 as power amplifiers. They plug the JMP-1 into the return of the JCM2000. It as simple as that.

Back in before 2010, dave used to use 9200 as power amps. He had 2 of em. One to play with and one for backup. Since 2010 he started using marshall jcm 2000 as power amps. And now he uses Marshall EL34 100/100.

Was wondering if someone could help me out with this. I'm getting a Mesa Boogie Quad Preamp but no power amp comes with it. Should I get a 9200 or keep my JCM 2000 and run it through that? I mainly want to be able to run the Quad Preamp at 16 ohms through my JCM 900 1960B Cab, just like my JCM 2000 now.

I have a 9200 and you should know that while they are kind of small (a 3U rack mount) they are VERY heavy. about 60-65 lbs. so be ready for that because once you put them in your rack and add a preamp/effects unit you are gonna be looking at around 80-100 lbs. I have a 6U rack case with a Pod XT Pro rackmount preamp/effects unit, Korg DT-1 tuner, and a Furman Mx-8 power supply mounted in the back and it weighs in at 85 lbs. So as far as being easier to haul around I would say - No.
