The Bond Experience

Жыл бұрын

A fantasy come true, Aston Martin Works allows me to play with their Goldfinger DB5s in the most incredible setting, fully outfitted in the same style suit that Connery wore in the movie! If that wasn't enough, the president, Paul Spires, takes us ALL on a tour of their facility that rivals Q's lab and will make you appreciate the time and heritage that goes into these works of art. This video is NO JOKE...
Q: "I never joke about my work, 007!"

When David is not running an advertising and marketing company, his hobby is The Bond Experience which is primarily a video blog where he discusses Bond experiences and the people and brands that help to create those experiences...
The mantra of living like Bond, one moment at a time emanates from a concept of experiencing the joy of collecting small moments in life that add up to amazing journeys and stories....whether it's through style, locations, literature, fitness, and the movies themselves the world of Bond is explored through its people and their stories.
Ultimately though, The Bond Experience channel is a celebration of the James Bond franchise and the many people that form a true community. Our core mission is to create a strong connection in the Bond community amongst all the fans, regardless of interest or demographic.

DB5 will forever be the sexiest car ever made in my books. I don't care if most other sports cars can beat it in a race, it's meant for wafting and looking classy.

As a former aircraft mechanic I can really appreciate the craftsmanship of the body guys. I was fortunate enough to have made 27 inner parts of a wing. It was for a 1950's Convair. Talk about a fun experience. My skill is absolutely lacking compared to these Craftsmen. What stunningly beautiful work they do!

In 1967, I actually sat in one of the Aston Martin's DB5's ,used in the film "Goldfinger"( I believe there were two!) It was on display at the A&S department store, in Manhasset, NY! My friend, an employee, let me sit in it after the store closed & the car's guard went home! It was a thrilling experience for a 21 year old "Bond" fan, but the inside looked somewhat less elaborate than the duplicate car, depicted here! Great memories!

I grew up in Miami. I had never seen snow. Mom used to take me to the only ice skating rink at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. One day the card playing scene in Goldfinger was being shot at the pool. I didn't know James Bond from a bag of elbows but Mom had me go over and meet Sean Connery. It made an impression because this will be my 51st year working behind the camera. I always lusted over having a DB5. I never found one that didn't need resto far beyond my penurious values. In 2013 I started building a 1965 Mustang Fastback with the goal of restoring it to a level close to the Aston in terms of interior and workmanship. It took three years. I redesigned the interior and every panel was covered in leather or high quality cloth. The seats were custom designed to my specifications with rivets like the GT40. It would have looked great against the DB5 in that car chase with Tilly Soames except she would have blown the doors off the Aston. No slight here. The DB5 is my favorite car of all time.

Paul's story about seeing the DB5 in cinema reminded me.. I watched Skyfall in Leicester Square Odeon, Screen Number 1. Opening day. It was a sell out, 800 people. As you see the garage door opening, there was a cheer which could only be matched by the "James Bond Will Return".

Good video. I also went to Jay Leno's for more technical (drivetrain) info. I am ambivalent about keeping the DB5 in the series. As a car nut and 66 year old Bond fan, I love seeing the car. But Brosnan / Craig having a 282 hp 4-liter 6 1964 DB5 with a paltry 8.1 second 0-60 time to tool around in modern times is a bit gratuitous and requires suspension of belief. Blofeld could pull away from him in a garden variety Ford Focus. 🙂

Yes, TBH, before I have my first *ahem* beer, the appearance of the DB5 in the later Bond movies can feel like a little bit of pandering to the earlier Bond generations to keep them (us) onboard.

My father was fortunate to drive the Bond DB5 when it was being looked after at Merchiston Motors, home of Ecurie Ecosse, while the car was being used at the Ending Military Tattoo. It was crashed during its display drive by the Aston Marty driver and quickly repaired with the combined efforts of K & I Ltd in Edinburgh and Merchiston Motors. Why would anyone want to spend a fortune on a replica of such an iconic car and have it built in LHD? Nice tour of the facility and details of the car builds, but you would have thought that Paul Spires would have known that it was Corgi not Dinky that built the best known toy model version.

I really like the extra attention they are devoting to standardizing the fit of the body panels, and that's more than Aston Martin did back in the day. The originals were basically hand-built cars, and as such, no two were _exactly_ alike in that fitment aspect. And the level of build quality that was acceptable in the 1960s would put an auto maker out of business today. I'll never own an Aston Martin (sadly), but as someone who has restored a 1963 Studebaker Avanti, I have experienced similar problems with 1960s, hand-built fitment. As a fairly low-volume car, Studebaker made the body in fiberglass (which they had never done before) and the bodies were basically built by hand by a team at the Studebaker factory. Sixty years later, I have encountered the same problem with the fit being slightly off in places. I had to put a shim on one of the driver's door hinges because after the car was repainted, the door skin didn't quite line up with the fender, and the panel gap was too narrow, with the result that opening the door chipped some of the new paint off the rear edge of the fender because the fit was off. The passenger side door fit correctly, and there was no similar problem on that side. The shim cured that problem, but it was necessary to slap that band aid on an issue created by less than perfect fit when the car's body was assembled at the factory in 1962. (BTW, two other similarities for Avanti -- James Bond's creator Ian Fleming owned one, and Studebaker also started out as a maker of horse-drawn carriages in the 1850s, and made the switch over to manufacturing automobiles in the early 20th century. I'll have to be content with those similarities because, as I say, I'll never have the money to own and maintain an Aston Martin.)

Awesome video, one word Passion, Passion for Bond Passion for Aston Martin. My Bond 60th Anniversary Celebration took me to near Glencoe a month ago to get the Skyfall Valley photo, unfortunately my budget couldn't stretch to a DB5 so a Sir Ian Callum designed (He did the Vanquish or Vanish) Jag took its place. I did drive past a broken down DB5 or DB6 about 8 miles from the location on my way back to Oban, hope the owner got the old girl started and got his photo

If David is in the market for another Aston, might I suggest a DB7! My reasoning is, they straddle a line of vintage and modern Aston! They have the old school charm and handbuilt qualities. But relatively modern reliability, and serviceablility! Aside from that thr db7 was the car which started modern aston design language from the vanquish and dbs and onwards! You can get one with the old school straight 6 supercharged or a v12 and both came from factory with a manual! Unlike the vanquish which though it is gorgeous the works modified manual swaps leave little room for your feet to drive them with 😅. Anyhow that is my recommendation! But any Aston will be a good time for sure! Excellent video as always!

Nice video! I learned recently that the Aston you see Bond driving in Goldfinger is actually a DB4 Series 5 Vantage. It's the final iteration of the model before the DB5 was introduced but fitted with the DB5’s larger 4.0 engine. I'm surprised he didn't mention that detail on the tour.
