I had a problem with my DeWalt 735 planer. After a little trouble shoot I think I found the problem. Let me know if this has ever happened to you.

Thanks so much for the video; mine came down to the cap that holds one of the brushes had wiggled loose (vibrated loose from the billion rpm motor!) and wasn’t holding the brush in far enough. Same deal, after a beer break (which allowed thermal contraction of the brush as it cooled?) it didn’t turn on.

Gonna try this out... My planner runs but sounds laboured and then the breaker on the planer pops... Motor feels really hot!!! Thoughts??

Worn brushes could definitely cause that. Give them a look.

Seems like those are the two main culprits.

You're welcome. Clean & file the brushes in the motor & pick up a set of new ones to keep for the next time you have a problem.

This helped me diagnose the problem with mine. Same problem you had. Thanks!

Mine did the same thing, the brushes were loose. The little black plastic cap that holds the brushes in was loose. Tightened them both up and it works fine. But I will be ordering some new brushes JIC.

It's good to keep some spares around just in case.

Great video and very helpful! Thanks for sharing. Mine has started doing the same lately and it would always fire up after I gave the motor some tough love with my wooden mallet… however, it is happening every time now. I am now pulling out the brushes and will be ordering a new set tomorrow. I have had this planet for about 8 years. It has had some good hard work, but certainly not full time by any means. I have upgraded to the Shelix head. It’s vastly superior to the factory head and knives. Thanks again for the video! Cheers.

Hopefully the new brushes take care of your problem. I upgraded my cutter head too. My machine operates very nice with the upgrade.

6.19.23: I was planing 8' 2x4's on my infrequently used Dewalt 13" Planer. It cut off. I flipped switch back on and planed one more 2x4. Cut off again. Now nothing happens when I flip the switch on. Did not blow a fuse. You have given me several reasons to check out. My first fear is the motor fried on a machine that is used lightly and for personal hobby use! I did need to empty full dust collection. You have given me several things to check (ie. two bushings, etc) and prevent me from mourning an early motor death just yet.
