My DIY Window Seat Storage Hack [Full Project]

Turning this existing window seat into a cedar-lined storage bench (for under $250!) ended up being way harder than I expected. And. . . before all you woodworkers chime in, yeah I know, it's mostly my own fault. :)
Look - we're not carpenters. Clearly. :D But I figured the plan was simple enough: cut out the lids, line the storage space with cedar, and then re-attach the lids with piano hinges. Bada bing, bada boom.
Yeah. Things DEFINITELY got away from us.
Still, I think the end result is still pretty good. And it only cost around $250 for all the materials.
So now it's your turn. . . all you wood-working, tree-milling, boat-building, cabinet-making geniuses. What'd we do wrong? Or right?
Let us know in the comments!

Great job! They look great. I, too have taken on (and finished) numerous projects that have required multiple “revisions”… My only observation is that it would have been great if you could have put it all together with an internal hinge so the metal piano hinges wouldn’t distract from the overall look. Overall, looks great & it’s always satisfying to figure it out & overcome!!
@BroBuilds
@BroBuilds Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you. At the time I was concerned that the screws from an internal hinge would have torn out of the MDF over time. So instead of screwing into the edge of the MDF, I attached it this way.

Don't know if anyone said that before but a woodworking friend of mine told me a trick. You can buy boards that are supported by plywood that's glued at 90° to the rest at the two ends. This way it can't bend with the fiber of the wood. You need to know the size of the boards though.

@BroBuilds
@BroBuilds 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can put the hinge strips flat against each other (closed) and place them just sticking out of the crack. Then attach the hinges to the lid by screwing INTO the edge of the lid. I worried they'd split going into the edges like that, so I did it top down. But if you get better wood fire your lids - solid boards - that'd be the way to do it.
