im not sure if u learned how to yet but ill tell u myself. my father has a dog (a saintbernard mix with pitbull) and she is as sweet as can be, she even got so excited to see me that she pissed the floor.after she calmed down i noticed my father had a e collar on her so she can "listen", but the problem is that whenever she sees you grab the remote she tends to instead instantly lay down or cower away even tho the settings are on vibrate (yes i tested all the settings on myself and it feel like a phone vibration,the shock feels like a light pitch but i still wouldn't use it on her even if it was just a little pitch) she still gets scared and tends to not listen as well. like any dog ofcourse they listen when you have treats but the way i had made her get off of positive reinforcement was by learning her pros and cons. a lot of pros from her is that she loves people, dogs, and knows when and when not to bark et, but the con is that even if she walks towards you and you tell her a simple commands like sit or stay etc she will either show you her butt so you can scratch it or walks away to the other room but still ends up coming back, she even tends to not listen to my dad (her owner) and tends to try and walk away. in her defence my fathers voice can be scary when he yells so it can cause any dog to either listen or cower away. alr now that i gave you some useless information about my dog and her pros and cons ill now tell you how i finally taught her how to listen. i stop letting her leave the room whenever i tell her to do something, either by grabbing her by the collar, putting a leash on her. or even block. also make it fun when your training ur dog. use a cheerinful voice and sau good things to them like "GOOD JOOOBB" be overly happy when your dog does things u want. and don't let them be bossy towards you like jumping, ignoring, etc. make sure u use the leash for what its for. guiding etc. blah blah basically make things fun for them. i hope this helped btww

To any who says he gave more treats because he wasn't listening. The dog is still getting there. Also he did explain what to do. Instead of giving your dog a treat every time he does a command you start giving them a treat every three or so commands. It's about putting more reps in between rewards. That's it

As I said to someone else, I recommend this over treats, ------------------------------------------------------------- If you don't want to use treats, then use a "command collar" its a plastic non aggressive pinch collar designed to mimic the mothers pinch. This is a much better way of training as your dog learns to respect you with no loss of love. With treats, if the value to the dog of the temptation or behavior outweighs a treat, or what It thinks the treat is worth, you will lose control of your dog. Not saying its not feasible to have a fully trained and obedient dog based on treats, but their is a difference you will see in the training. Your dog will look to you for direction rather then your hand for a treat, good luck and happy new year! Go through basic commands popping the collar upwards with increasing force until the command is met. Now don't get carried away, if the dog doesn't understand what you want, then it is just a useless punishment of sorts. Show the dog what you want at least 10 times, then start correcting. For more information search of Don Sullivan the dogfather training. You can buy the DVDs and collar on Amazon but its basic knowledge and doesn't not really need the price tag it has. But the collar is extremely worthwhile. Here is one made by a more reliable brand then the knockoffs available. www.amazon.com/dp/B000A6BD5K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_WND.FbYNNB66D They work incredibly well and quick, my 10 and a half week old white lab has gotten the basics Sit, stay , off, leave it, go to your bed, and this way, not perfect by any means but absolutely not treats have been used besides peanut butter and a few treating her speciation issue. Its important you reward him/her with praise and have play sessions in between training sessions. It works incredibly easily and your dog respects you and loves you rather then expecting treats.

It may have been the act of pointing across your body. Prior to, in the house, Ethan pointed away from and when switching back outside the pup responded more reliably. The thing to try would be to switch hands if changing positions so the pointing arm is on the side that you wish the pup would go. Dogs vary and trainers miss some things but will have to figure it out. It's dog training, not mathematics. Not as much right and wrong _ just better, depending on the pup. Relax.

I’ve been taking my German short hair dove hunting the last few days and he’s been doing awesome with steadiness, but he has a bad habit of whining while he’s waiting. It’s really bad at the beginning of the day. Once he starts retrieving the whining slows down a little but he’s still pretty persistent. Ive tried ignoring him, positive and negative reinforcement. Nothing seems to be working. Is there anything you guys can recommend to correct this?

Never train puppy with treat. I had Four dogs during the 30 years one at a time. Only one dog I treated with food when I train. Guess what he never listen to me my commend if I don’t have treat for him. However, I stoped feed him treat while train it was real hard to train without food. Mean while other three dogs I had, I never gave them treat. I only pet them when they listened to me. All three dog I trained without food, My life was easy, they listened me my commend without treat but the only one dog I trained with food was failure his entire life with me. He was just sweat home dog.

First of all, the clicker is just a way of marking the action when the dog listens to your command. You can do the same thing by just saying "Yes." I don't use a clicker myself, not that there is anything wrong with it but "yes" works just as well. Secondly, NO! Using a clicker is certainly NOT building up to using a shock collar! There is absolutely NO reason for you needing to resort to shocking your dog to get him/her to listen and follow your commands. You also don't need any kind of what some of these people call "command collars." This whole "respect" nonsense or claims that the dog will not be reliable, will always look at your hand for treats etc... is pure nonsense thrown out by those who want to justify using aversive techniques. I train all kinds of dogs with all kind of behavioral problems at a shelter and I get great results without using any of these kinds of tools or fear based tactics. You don't need to shock a dog, put on a collar that pinches the dog, having to start tugging, what they call "popping" on the leash etc... If you have any skills as a trainer then you do not need any of these fear based or pain based methods. If you are not effective without the use of these tools and techniques then it means either your skills need more work or your simply lazy. You can get results from smacking your kids when they do something wrong but there are better ways to approach teach them what they should and shouldn't be doing! Finally, you'll hear trainers spew out all kinds of nonsense about how using treats is not as effective, it doesn't stick, you'll have to always feed them treats etc... but they are spewing this out because on one of two reasons. The first is that they are completely clueless as to how to effectively use treats in their training or two, they know very well that it's a very effective way to train but they just throw this kind of nonsense out there in order to attempt to justify their own methods. In any case, all of it is complete nonsense and in fact it has been proven that this way of training is MORE effective and long lasting then using fear based or pain based training, Not to mention you build a better relationship with your dog. The real story with using treats is to at first reward them alot so they start to learn what behavior is the desired behavior. They are then doing this because they WANT to and not because they are forced to. That right there alone in much more effective. Are you more likely to do something because you WANT TO or because you are forced to do it? As they learn what actions gets them the treats, you'll slowly start decreasing the treats by having them hold on commands longer, maybe doing a variety of commands before they get a treat etc... then you start moving from replacing treats with praise, showing affection etc... the goal is to ween them off treats for the most part. Nothing wrong with still giving a good treat randomly here or there though. At that point you are doing it just because you feel like it, NOT because you are dependent on it! So NO, you don't constantly give your dogs treats for the rest of their lives. That's just silly fabricated nonsense!!! Again, despite all the nonsense you'll hear from some other trainers that use pain based tools, "Popping" etc... this way of training is extremely effective and even more long lasting then using these other methods. The reason is that the dog is now following commands because they WANT to as opposed to being forced to. Nothing is more powerful then being motivated to do something because you find pleasure in doing something. I'll take giving a tiny little treat to a dog over shocking them any day. I'm sure your dog would also!!!

It’s classical conditioning. Look up Pavlov’s dogs, it should give you a pretty good idea. The idea is that eventually you use the clicker without the treats and he’ll still listen because he associates it with getting a treat.

During collar training how do you keep your puppy from learning that when the collar is on, that means business, but when the collar isn’t on, then they don’t have to listen? Do you keep the e collar on your puppy for all training sessions so they don’t make the mental connection?
@Edendog
@Edendog 3 жыл бұрын
Some companies make “dummy collars” which look and feel the same but aren’t expensive, don’t work, don’t have contacts etc so you can leave that on if you’re looking for a quick fix for an overly clever dog noticing that he can ignore behaving without the collar. The slower, longer fix is to proof each behavior and drill behaviors using other forms of pressure besides the collar and rewards of course. And try not to ask him to do things you can’t enforce until the dog is SOLID

sorry for the late response but the click means he's doing a good job and so the puppy will know that the clicker is a positive thing. idk how to explain it but it's called clicker training if you want to look more into it (i think eventually you just do the clicks without the treats, not sure tho)

A click is to mark the desired behavior. A variable reward/treat is to space out the treats more and more until eventually, the dog is expected to do the command without being treated
