IVDD mini dachshund recovery journey, 2-5 weeks post spinal surgery!

Kevin Bacon (the sausage dog!) had stage 4 IVDD. He was operated on at the Willows in Solihull and this is video 2 of his recovery journey.

They are brave little dogs!! The recovery can be hard at times but you get out what you put in and it’s so worth it to help them get back to their sassy little selves ❤️ I hope his recovery goes well!!

Fantastic to see Kevin doing so well , I can relate to Kevin and his dedicated mum as I am with my Benny its been close to 4 weeks after the surgery and my boy is progressing very nicely. In order to achieve positive result there are two main factors one should be prepared for and its love and dedication and with good physio program your furry boy/girl will be delighted to be jolly once again ..

Thanks for sharing your journey. This gives me hope. Our Dachshund had spinal surgery a week ago and he can stand now but this gives me encouragement that with hard work he will eventually walk.

Ah I’m so glad this has helped you! I’m sure he’ll be walking again in no time, it’s a fairly long road but consistent physio, hydro, fish oil supplements and keeping them nice and slim to help recovery speed are my top tips!!

My dog got surgery also 2 weeks ago, now we are sailing to excercise to walk again. Can we have purchaing info for excercise tool ? Especially i can not find tools which lift legs

Hey! He was doing really well but had another episode, stage 3 so not as bad and was up walking a lot sooner. I cannot recommend hydrotherapy and physio enough and just making sure they don’t jump up/down anything when recovered - easier said than done I know!! Wishing yours all the best with recovery 🤍

Hey! It’s been a very long process honestly and he’s had a few set backs. Hydrotherapy has been game changing! But sadly I don’t think he’ll ever be how he was before. We have to watch him a lot, he often gets muscle soreness and back spasms from tension in his back. But we know what to look out for now! The key for me is hydro, some laser, cod liver oil, and acupuncture (when he’s a bit sore) and making sure he keeps his weight down!

Honestly just make sure you give time to his recovery and all the help with physio and I’m sure yours will be absolutely fine. Kevin had grade 4 IVDD which is high, I think hence him not being back to normal. But for a lot of dogs I think they make full recoveries!

Did he have deep pain sensation after his surgery?

I’m not sure they tested for that soon after surgery as he was on so many drugs for so many weeks there’s no way really to tell. He was stage 4 when he went in and had some pain sensation in his rear legs - so wasn’t grade 5. Hope that helps 🤍

@@kristenr2853 oh it’s so so stressful, just keep the physio exercises and if you can get him some laser therapy? It’s so so hard so my heart goes out to you
