I have split several of my dreads by separating them and they are neither weak nor messy. I did not cut them however. I gradually pulled them apart over a matter of weeks. Some were already separating at the root and split easily. I simply tidied any fuzzy bits afterwards. Mine are still strong and I've had no issues with them at all. I would never cut up the middle nor do I cut to separate my roots. In fact I have stopped having my dreads tidied by 3 different "locticians" because they cut my roots apart. I went back to tidying my hair myself and am now much happier with it.

I separated mine by cutting up the middle but I made sure I cut the side hairs of the dreadlocks. So I didn't weaken any dreads. They actually look quite nice now

I have extensions and a few of my dreads are too weak to hold onto the extensions and I can literally just pull them out when they loosen sometimes. Although they have strengthened over time. They're 4 months old next week so they've still got a lot it time! :)

if you do want to "split" dreads you could root flip the dread in question that you want to split and make sure it doesn't Congo back together. now this method takes a while but it comes with minimal risk to losing half of your lock

I found through my own experiences; that deadlock extensions are a VERY bad idea. ( I understand this video doesn't talk about real dread extensions; meaning "a foreign hair source"). However, I had false hair dreads (back combed)... and then once the false dreads are finished back combed into my own existing dreadlocks. This wasn't done in a salon but typically what you would find done in a salon. I soon found this was a bad idea, after the heavy lint and moisture madness started to occur just after 2-3 short months. I very soon cut out the extensions of my dreadlocks and went totally 100% natural. So glad I did so soon. My 3 year old dreads are very hardy and strong now with very minimal lint/moisture build up.

I have separated a couple but by tearing. I have had a couple that were too big but when I felt them there was almost a separation in them. I made a little hole and pulled/ripped them apart that way. They separated fine at the scalp but one is always shorter at the end. The way my hair locked up, almost all of my ends have like paddles or dread balls near the ends. I never did any maintenance on mine except for shampooing and separating neither.

Great idea for a video !!!! For those of little knowledge in essential oils, can you explain why people with our specified hairstyle would use it ? In general, health wise, etc. For example, why tea tree is so good for your hair, or that peppermint is so cooling... that kind of thing. Or even all the oils you have learned of, maybe just the ones you know of/have. Hope this helps with the great mystery of what else you haven't covered over the dread and dread process.... you knid of summed everything up, (great job btw !). :)

So I had dreadlocked my whole head and then shaved the back and sides with those that are cut off if I were to get them added as extensions to the ones still growing should I ask to get them sewn or is it possible to crochet them together and if so which would be recommended

Aww man....i have never maintained any of my dreadlocks as I've had 3 sets in about 20 years - I've experienced a number of dos and don't for sure....you can tooootally fix them quickly and easily especially that little fellow hanging on for dear life BUT it entails the dreaded crochet hook and well hard to explain but I will if you'd like. Just wanted to tell you you can save your beautiful dreaddie sand no string needed either. 😊👍🏻
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 8 жыл бұрын
If I used a crochet hook I'd be able to attach the two halves without string, but when the dreads are cut down the middle they're just totally weakened throughout, so it's not just the issue of the string loosening, the dreads themselves are just totally weak - crocheting wouldn't really help them out long term... once they're grown out a bit more I'm lopping the ends off ^^

I have a question that I hope you'll answer/maybe do a video about. So I'm growing my hair out for dreads and my hair is maybe 4.5 inches right now. I'm waiting until my hair is about 6 inches before putting them in. I was planning to do it at a Salon since I don't have any friends that can help me. Anyways, my question is this. So some people use a technique known as "felting" as a chemical free way to add color to dreads this also makes them thicker and more uniform looking (I.E. less stray hairs). Would you recommend felting new dreads? Like with a wool similar to a persons natural hair color, especially if the dreads are short to start out? I'd imagine the felting would hold the knotted hair better then as the dreads begin to grow in and mature you could cut off the felted parts that you originally started with. Any answer would be great.

I think it should be added that IF dreads Congo up into one dreadlock it is possible to cut them apart. I had a friend one time that had 4 different dreadlocks Congo into one on the back of her head that we were able to cut them up the middle into at least 2. You gotta find a a spot where you can feel the separate dreads, shove your fingers in there and pull them apart as hard as you can then cut the rest of the hair that holds them together.

Question: I have dreads down past my butt as you can imagine they are extremely heavy. Especially when wet. I have paint brush tips or wispy ends whichever you prefer, I'd like to cut my hair but I love my ends and I'm not sure how to achieve the wispy ends after cutting. I've seen many videos about cutting dreads and also about how to blunt your tips but none on how to cut dreads shorter and make wispy ends. Please please please give me some advice on this or make a video about it. Thank you!

I have two on the crown of my head that, for reasons unknown, never fully locked at the center, and as they grew out, they kind of split into two smaller dreads... Within one single dread, thats fully locked in either end. It's been a stressful nightmare, as I'm native American with fine, soft hair and the loose hair within that split mess seems to be from them breaking. I need to hit up the Dollylocks salon and have them fix this shit.

I got dreadlocks a bit over 2 weeks ago and they are already full of loops :D I know it's normal for young dreads but i didn't know it would happen this fast. Could my dreads really start shrinking this fast? Or could this be because my dreads were made using back combing&crochet hooking? I also sometimes do maintainance using a crochet hook. They don't feel any tighter than 2 weeks ago either. Should i just be happy because they have possibly started shrinking this early on? :D

doctored locks sells dread filler kinky human hair for repairing dreads.... you crochet the hair after spiralling a layer around them. this would give them their structure back and since its human hair and not synthetic hair, it will dread normally. the damaged dread will be the center, and they have tutorials on how to use it...

I had dreads a few months ago for about 7 months and I had a job change and had to brush them out. I am wanting to put them back in but as I was brushing my old set out, I found a lot of sticky reside in my dreads. I'm worried that if I redo them they will incur more build up. I work in a smokey environment if that makes a difference but I only used dread specific shampoos. How can I avoid this residue?

Could you make the dreadlocks thinner by ripping the Dreadlock by the root ?
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 8 жыл бұрын
If you separated the dreadlock at it's root and kept it separated, then it would grow out as two dreads... but keeping it separated while the two halves are growing on top of each other would be very difficult, and it would take years for it to grow out as two separate dreads... and even then you'd have to chop off the still combined part further along it's length.

@chriskreush i started some dreads with 3 strand braids, and it dreaded from the root and the started to dread together. In my experience it left weak spots. I had some that were loosening in the middle and dreading on top and bottom. I ended up brushing out the bottom and twisting them (twist and rip). hope my experience helps you with question.

Hi there, I have a question and possibly a video idea regarding dreadlock shampoos. In your experience what dreadlock shampoo has done the best job in hard water? Dr bronners doesn't do the job anymore and baking soda just doesn't feel good.
@dreadlovelies6688
@dreadlovelies6688 8 жыл бұрын
have you tried putting a table spoon of banking soda IN your shampoo? It should help soften the water and help the bronners work easier. I use a pouf, personally. I sud up my shampoo and then scrub my roots with the suddy pouf.

Question: I've watched quite a few of your videos and I haven't really seen this addressed yet. I'll keep looking too but, I have very thin and fine hair. I'm totally terrified to get dreads and they turn out thin and spindly. I see videos that add yarn around dreads but I want to add yarn INTO the dreads to add volume. Is this possible? Do you have any other suggestions to add volume? Thanks.

Nicole Powell hi! I know this is very late but maybe it'll still be helpful. I had very fine straight hair and like you I was worried they'd make very thin dreads. I bought human hair extensions and fed them into my hair as I made them with the backcomb method. looks as though I've always had very thick hair all along. not sure if what I did is recommended but it's worked out for me with no issues. good luck whatever you decide to do

I have a big question... The Interference of the number of extensions hair depends on the size of the head or in thickness of the dreads? Im going to pay to a girl to put dread on me and I will have to use extensions. The girl who's going to make said me the price and then I said a few days later that I want them not so thick, I want fine dreads, and now she's saying to me that I have to pay more. Why?! If the size of my head is the same?! Why does she want more money if the amount of hair is the same? Or isn't? I'm very confuse and I don't want to be cheated... Please someone can explain..

Hey man I have a question, you don't have to make a video for me I just need an answer. I had a lady section my hair for me and she used a lot of waxy stuff that hardened my hair to my scalp basically. With that being said, I'm never letting her touch my hair again. But my question is how can i maintain the dread process without going to someone for maintenance? By the way my hair is still sectioned and still looks like new dreads. I would REALLY APPRECIATE a reply bro!!!!

I had 2 doing that, I used a crochet hook to pull it together and tighten it up there. Crochet hooks are fine to use with dreads as long as you aren't pulling the hair completely through (that will break the hair), instead just pull the loose hair into the center of the dread. Hope that helps :D

I'm 6 months in too. It feels to me like I have some that are really solid, and others that seem looser than when they were new, and most of them somewhere in between. Mostly "teenage" dreads I guess, like kinda mature but still babies compared to where they will be. Idk if that makes sense.
