Excellent video again, especially with the introduction. As for preload... I've never installed a crank with the recommended preload. It puts axial load on the bearings when its not really needed. At best I just lightly finger tighten the preload nut, lock the crank arm and check the cranks spin smoothly and freely then lock the preload nut only to stop it from falling out. You could even remove it if you want. The crank won't fall off.

Fantastic Tube video and so exciting to appreciate the THM dream carbon crank. I have Token Ninja BB assembly (BB86) and have changed out the bearings from 37x24x7mm to Shimano standard NTN 6805 37x25x7mm bearings with tight fit plastic cups. The main reason why I did this was to avoid high cadence pedal vibration or throb (apology). The reason is to eliminate under-rotation of the bearing inner race to the axle shaft. So when I see that you place grease under the bearing race contact to the shaft I worry that it might promote under-rotation. It might better to eliminate that loose fit. Either like I have described above or keep dry and install Loctite instead of grease (although I'm not sure how it works with carbon/steel interface).

Should I seek medical attention? I can't stop watching that amazing intro! Tobias has always created quality content but I think the intro to this video is the best one he has done so far. The beautiful music matches the video perfectly, it is almost as though someone created the music FOR the video instead of the other way round (Tell us the truth, how much did you PAY someone to create this music for you?). The fading subtitles are accompanied by the sound of whooshing wind. Then at 1:15, the change in the music is accompanied by the glow on logo on the crank arm .Yes, these are the things you notice after watching this over and over again 😆. Wow. So good. "So so beautiful."

Thanks for the recommendation for garbaruk oval chain ring for sram flattop compatible chains. I ended up ordering oval aero 1x 40T and tested it out today. Significant improvement over the wolf tooth one. Given its aero solid disc type, I run molten speed Wax, and noticed when climbing, naturally the chain is at its greatest cross - chain.. Interesting, it's loud.... Waxed chain on solid chain ring makes for a loud noise. Funny because I was on a long climb and people could hear me coming, thought something was wrong with my bike. Have you experienced anything like this? Suggestions? Thanx RoJ.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 4 жыл бұрын
That’s one reason I don’t use wax... it is noisier than drip lubes, even wax based drip lubes... don’t care about 1 or 2 watts, I DO care very much about 5dB ;) Sorry have no useful suggestions for you.

I had a feeling you were going to say that. I am addicted to cooking my chains in wax. I have a few chains, so perhaps I will strip & clean of all wax on one and try lube. Any recommendations? It's been a while since I have used wet lubes. I'll take your word for it sir. Cheers Rav

I'm under no delusion that this is an "forever crank", even THM say max 10 years life. However THM has been making these cranks for many years already and you don't generally hear about crank failures from them. Still though, I don't buy this with longevity at the top of the priority list :)

Putting the preload tensioner at 10Nm seems high. Does THM say to do that? That compresses the area where the ring meets the crank, tensions the threads and stretches the threads away from the rest. In my head 4 was the number.

Really wish THM would make 165 mm versions of their cranks, my knees really dislike 170 mm cranks and can just about tolerate 165 mm. In fact, nobody seem to make a really light 165 mm crank AFAIK. Especially not one with power meter. My Quarq weighs twice as much as your THM crank, and that's without chainrings. That said, Thanks to the Tibia stem and the Carbonworks computer mount, my 3T Strada came in at almost exactly 8 kgs, (7,99 without mount and about 8.05 with, suggesting that the mount weighs less than the advertised 12 grams, I forgot to weigh it), a lighter saddle will possibly make it loose 100 grams, and there are rumors that Darimo might do a T1 for the Strada. Also, I weighed my wheels with tires, brake rotors and cassette and they came in at almost precisely 3 kgs, I did some quick calculations and saw that it seems possible to get a wheel set that weighs about 2 kgs and that would get the Strada pretty close to the UCI limit. :)
